  1. I've never been there (though I suppose I will at some point), but looking at it on TV kind of reminds me of the middle of the Mall of America. If you could open that roof, you still wouldn't be outside...
  2. Right. Forgot about that injury. Tough situation to be in with pretty much no one to fall back on in center field.
  3. Wait, time out. How is Parmelee not hitting? His line playing pretty much every game so far is .296/.394/.407 for an .801 OPS. Given the small sample size, it's probably stupid to extrapolate these numbers to a full season, but I'm forging ahead anyway. If he keeps this up, he's looking to be a good deal better than most of the pre-season projections posted on this site (including by me!). A mid-to-high-200s average, good on-base, between 15 and 20 home runs, and between 70 and 90 RBIs is not something you complain about. I do see his OBP coming down a bit with his batting average, but I think he's got more slugging in him. My initial projection was a full season at about .775 OPS, and I'm standing by that. As it pertains to Arcia, Parmelee's hitting (and not his lack thereof) is making it more likely that Morneau or Willingham gets moved at the deadline. Willingham goes and Arcia can take over left; Morneau goes and Parmelee can take over first while Arcia slides into right.
  4. Aside from Tuesday, has he ever been given a day off?
  5. Matt Tolbert! Next to the word "hustle" in the dictionary is a picture of Matt Tolbert. He played every play like it might be his last. Which, to be fair, it might well have been.
  6. Not with my internet connection last night.
  7. Certainly plausible, although I find it hard to tell exactly how hard it's raining when watching on TV. That last pitch is right in his wheelhouse, and normal Mauer doesn't get anything less than a double on that.
  8. Or maybe it isn't a trade. Maybe it's something more like a decision about whether he's organization filler or still a prospect worth investing in. Are they coming up on the year where they have to consider putting him on the 40-man, or is that still a year off?
  9. I don't think he did either, and neither did I in my reply. The fact is, we're past that point. The decision was made, and when you decide to put a guy like Hicks on your roster, you have to play him, and not sporadically off the bench. Whether the decision to put him on the major league roster prior to April 1 was a good idea is another discussion entirely (and I came down on the side of putting him in AAA). It's also a discussion almost impossible to have without hindsight bias. I just don't think it much matters halfway through April. You're not getting those 10 games back.
  10. I think I'm at that point in my life now too. Granted, many years ago I was at the opposite point, but assuming that I noticed kids around me, I'd try to tone it down. The drugs thing is ridiculous though. Don't kick yourself too hard for not saying anything; it's an uncomfortable spot to be in. Do it next time, but remember that it isn't really your fault - it wasn't you talking about drugs...
  11. On the plus side, I doubt the seats directly behind home plate will have ever been cheaper...
  12. Interesting question (maybe only to me): When considering this... ...how much variation is there from game to game? I think there's going to be quite a large difference between the two catchers if there isn't much variation - e.g. Mauer catching six games where Liam pitches to a 3.00 - 4.50 ERA every single time and Doumit catching six games where Liam pitches to a 7.50 to 8.50 ERA every single time. That's where it becomes obvious that the catchers are a major factor. Contrast that with this: There may be no large difference at all between the catchers if there is a lot of variation - e.g. Mauer catching five games between 4.50 and 5.00 ERA and catching one complete game with a 1.00 ERA and Doumit catching five games between 4.50 and 5.00 ERA and also catching one game where Liam gives up six runs in the second and gets yanked. In this case, the catchers are roughly equivalent, but Mauer just got a stroke of luck and Doumit just happened to be out there for an implosion. Averages are an interesting thing. I'm not going to do the research, mainly because I'm already procrastinating at 10:00 AM, but if someone would, I'd be interested to see.
  13. This is an apt analogy. I don't think we learned anything about Parmelee's long-term prospects last year, which is why we're pretty much back to square one with him this year. As much as I don't like Hicks' approach thus far - he is certainly capable of better - if you don't let him play through the slump, you'll never know how he responds to slumps. Calls for demotion are way premature.
  14. Yep, those changing tables take extra security guards and personnel too, so it's totally the same thing.
  15. Would it be better if the Twins opened it up for free? Yep. And beer would be better at $0.50. Tickets would be great at $2. That doesn't seem to be in the cards. And if free BP isn't in the cards, why are we bitching about them charging for it if the alternative is not having it at all?
  16. Got my hopes up there for a second.
  17. "Rich" or not, the math seems kind of simple to me. College is retarded expensive, but even in pricey private schools, you're looking at $50k a year, which should include living expenses. Four years and you're not even halfway through your post-tax bonus. No scholarship in the entire NCAA is worth that. It seems like a tough decision, but realistically, in the sandwich round, it just isn't.
  18. Serious question: is the existence of this extra-fee program better or worse than not having any opportunity to see the home team's batting practice at all? Because that's the way it was before.
  19. Ben Zobrist always comes out "Zobrith."
  20. I agree. He'd be first in my line.
  21. PJ Walters is not an option. He just pitched yesterday for the Red Wings (and made a hash of it, too). Not that I like the idea of starting him anyway. Hernandez is on the 40 man. Maybe him?
  22. I somewhat doubt that they do a "simple rank" of players and then go BPA. More likely they grade them out, say, on a 1-100 scale. If a 97 is on the board in front of a 91, go with the 97 no matter what. If two 91s are on the board, take the one who plays the position you need. If you are starved of pitching and a 91 pitcher is on the board behind a 92 centerfielder, then I think still take the pitcher. It isn't black and white, but it isn't that nuanced either.
  23. I take it you haven't watched the Cubs this season.
  24. Oooooh, how!? Apparently I'm a technological retard.
  25. I considered putting him in there too, but seeing as he's actually on the roster because of his bat, and not in spite of it, I thought it was less remarkable.
