  1. This is really funny. Plus now we can say that Matt Maloney had a positive impact on the team.
  2. Quadriceps thing, I think. He'll be sitting for a little while.
  3. This is so right. I remember lots of consternation on another thread about how it's somehow silly to think that we can "hide" a bad hitter in the lineup. Yes, in a perfect world, we want top-notch defense combined with top-notch offense at every single position on the field and bench. Is this realistic? You tell me. Frankly, I had very low expectations of Flormion coming into this year. I expected him to be gone by now, and I'm happy to eat crow. I also think that with the way he's performing, he'd fit in very nicely on a championship team with other offensive weapons. There is no such thing as a perfect team.
  4. Why is everyone so down on Josh Roenicke? He's been very good the last few years, including 2013. The last three years, his ERA+ has been 123, 142, and 135, respectively (though he only pitched 19 games in 2011). This year, he's sporting a 3.06 ERA, a 1.319 WHIP, and a 135 ERA+. Just looking at the actual results (which I admit I've done without looking into all sorts of advanced stuff that seems too nuanced for a quick post), he seems like a very good value for half a million dollars. What am I missing?
  5. I go back and forth on this too. I don't think that giving him a September callup guarantees his spot on the majors next year (see: Benson, Joe) but it may help to get him acclimated. I do think he'll be doing well enough next year to hear some cries of "forcing the issue" by July at the latest, and at that point it would be nice if going to the majors wasn't a complete shock. On the other hand, he doesn't need to be on the 40 man, and there are a couple question marks as far as young guys who need or may this year need spots on the 40 man. This may be overstated, as we know what we have in guys like Bernier or Thomas, but bad teams can't afford to be cavalier with roster spots. Similarly, if we look at his position, I doubt we can honestly say that replacing Plouffe at third base is a top priority for the team. No Plouffe isn't a future hall of famer, but I don't think we need to rush Sano for lack of a good option. The situation with Hicks was quite different.
  6. Happy for Josmil Pinto. A great year rewarded. I hope we see him in a Twins uniform soon.
  7. Good information. I think that it probably has a lot to do with how pitchers are throwing to him these days. They read the scouting report; if it's inside, he can hammer it over the left field fence. Pitch him away and see if he can hit it to other side. Honestly, it hasn't been his strong suit thus far in his career, but it's good to see him adapting.
  8. There is no possible way that this could ever blow up in a team's face. They should definitely sign him to a 12 year deal because he's pitched well for part of a season. Better yet, the Tigers or White Sox should sign him. What could go wrong?
  9. Fingers crossed. And let's not forget Butera. (...wait a minute)
  10. In light of the Brewers offering a $10 voucher to each fan for the month of August due to saving $3.5 million from Ryan Braun's suspension, I would suggest that the Twins offer each fan a $0.70 voucher for the month of August from Joe Mauer's paternity leave. I don't know about you, but I could go for roughly 8% of a beer right now.
  11. Wow. I have some crow to eat. Although I was right to be bullish on Dozier; he's tearing it up as a defensive second baseman.
  12. Both Hendriks and May got hit around a bit. Good news though - Arcia hit a home run. Hopefully the first step to his return to normalcy.
  13. Kind of what I was thinking too. After that absolutely abysmal start, Hicks has actually trended from serviceable to good to surprisingly good. Arcia needs work. My guess is that by the end of the year, Hicks is considered further along. The CF defense doesn't hurt either.
  14. I'm never there early enough for this kind of thing, since I'm usually stumbling in from Cuzzy's. Anyone know how early you have to get there to have a reasonable shot at picking one of these up?
  15. Kind of figures the way he was pitching. I wonder if he was playing hurt, but not really hurt enough to stop playing. In any case, I hope it really is just a rest and recover kind of thing.
  16. I don't think you'd have to look far for a precedent. How about the guy he's replacing? In 64 games in AAA last year, Parmelee hit BETTER than Colabello is now, with a ridiculous 1.104 OPS. I think it goes to show how big the jump to the majors is.
  17. Like the 8th inning last night when he knocked 2 in with bases loaded? Or not like that?
  18. I will! I'll be sitting next to the guy with the Morneau jersey.
  19. I'd sure rather have him catch, too. But let's not pretend he'd be a liability at first base.
  20. I'll be at the game. Look for me - I'll be the guy wearing the Mauer jersey.
  21. So Gardy takes lots of abuse from the peanut gallery for (granted) stupid assumptions like "play second, bat second." But this kind of thing gets a pass? Why does a first baseman have to be a power hitter if the alternative is a hitter like Joe? Just because he's a first baseman? Besides, it's not like he can't hit for power, even if his totals in the particular home run statistic are somewhat low. His slugging percentage would be roughly average for first basemen in the majors this year, and his OPS would put him in the top 6 or 7. His OBP, which is the real strength of his game, would only trail Joey Votto this year, and just because he plays first base doesn't mean OBP is unimportant. Hell, I'd take Joe as a full-time first baseman over lots of first basemen in this league and not fret for one second about his home run total. To do otherwise is just lazy thinking.
  22. It is, and it's often written as a connected "y" with dots over it when in lowercase. The pronunciation is a long I, as in Blyleven. Fun fact: when used at the beginning of a sentence or proper noun, both letters are capitalized, as in IJmuiden, a town near Haarlem in Noord Holland where my grandfather lived until World War II.
  23. When it pulls out the soap? Seriously though, there are pluses to losing, but I don't think (and I wouldn't want) the team to intentionally lose games.
  24. Probably the "when healthy" part. I always liked Scott Baker, but I did find it frustrating how fragile he seemed to be.
