  1. Wow! That may be the most foolish Votto has looked at the plate all year!
  2. You're not thinking of anybody in Minnesota, are you?
  3. You'd be surprised - it is statistically proven that the collective IQ's of clubs in contention drops proportional to how close it is to July 31st.
  4. Former Twins minor leaguer Matt Schuld was picked up by the St. Paul Saints (American Association - indy ball) and is starting today in St. Paul.
  5. Guerra has had a few rough outings recently. Waldrop has looked pretty good, now that he's pitching again. I think they'll give Duensing at least one more start - there's a period of 10 days with 11 games coming up. They'll need 5 starters plus a spot start.
  6. If he likes playing here, would he be willing to sign for less than he could get as a free agent? If so, it's worth looking at, but let's just make sure we don't overpay. He's making $3M this year, and I would be hard-pressed to offer more than $4M, maybe $4.5M, per year for a couple of years. He is replaceable.
  7. And the fact that he pitched yesterday means they can't even backdate the DL to his previous outing - that was a week sitting on the bench totally wasted.
  8. I'd be curious how many people on this board would even recognize the reference. I guess it shows my age that I did.
  9. My guess is that the DH is heading toward universal acceptance anyway, eventually. That will reduce the number of substitutions and make a larger roster mostly unnecessary. I do think there would be merit in looking at a 7-day DL list - not just for concussions, but for any injury like the minor leagues have. That would better maximize managers having a full bench available to play, and not have as many "walking wounded."
  10. It looks like Texas was using him in the same role we use Gray, Manship or Swarzak.
  11. Interesting. I hadn't thought about Deduno, but he is trending upward. The factor against him being called up is he would need to be put on the 40-man roster, whereas DeVries already is. Yes, we have open 40-man roster slots, but it's harder to move people off the 40-man than it is the 25-man; you have to send them through waivers and could potentially lose him. I would think they would only add Deduno to the 40-man if they are pretty confident he can justify staying on it after the spot duty is done, and it may be a tad early to say that.
  12. MLB is indeed considering allowing split doubleheaders for just that reason - schedule congestion. They're not considering them as often, but they are moving to allowing each team to schedule 1 per season. If it catches on, who knows?
  13. Ah, that's why I like it when Perkins pitches. He doesn't just get the job done, it makes it interesting at the same time.
  14. I LOVE it when a pitcher walks home the tieing run! (non-Twins pitchers that is)
  15. Sano has been so-so in Beloit this year. Good HR total, but has tailed off recently, and average has suffered. Arcia has been hot since early May.
  16. Probably, just given the law of averages (30 teams x 12 pitchers = 360 pitchers), but I can appreciate the sentiment. Another disappointing night from Blackie.
  17. OK, so we have a day-night doubleheader scheduled for Saturday 6/30 (because of a previous postponement). MLB roster rules have been changed this year to allow a team to have a 26th person on the active roster for the day of those games (presumably to allow them to bring up a spot starter without completely upsetting their rotation). So do the Twins take advantage of this? Who do they bring up - DeVries? Or do they bring up a bench player or another reliever (on the assumption that the bullpen will be needed heavily that day)? Thoughts?
  18. Shouldn't be a problem. We just gotta find a way to pitch around the first 5 guys in the lineup.
  19. "Bad Teams or Good Liriano?" Yes. But will either last? If I could be reasonably sure this time it's for real, I'd sign him back up in a heartbeat. Given his history, though, how can we really have that kind of confidence... If something decent is offered as trade bait, I think you gotta consider it, even if it's a move we look back on with hindsight and criticize (when he throw consecutive one-hit games 8 years from now for somebody else).
  20. For those interested, Buxton is playing today for GCL Twins. He's batting first, playing CF. So far 0-3 after 6 innings.
  21. Did you even watch the play happen?
  22. I'd be curious to hear your reasons for proposing the increase. Is there a particularly problem/issue you think this would address, or are you just generating discussion?
  23. Yes. It forces teams to play solid, fundamental baseball and not make mental or physical mistakes. You won't get bailed out by a big inning later on.
  24. I prefer a good pitchers duel - game 7 of the 91 series is my favorite game of all time.
