  1. Don't buy it.. None of it. Especially when you juxtapose the speculation on your part, vs. the facts as they have been presented to the table already. "Pretty impressive?" Maybe for the MN Twins, but not for the best organizations in baseball. Time to start thinking outside of the local box, already.
  2. LaVelle announces O'Rourke is getting the call from Rochester for LHRP major league tryouts (and got some facts wrong- he apparently conflated his AA numbers with his AAA numbers): What are his chances of succeeding, vs. Darnell and Rogers? Here are their AAA stats vs. lefties in 2015: O'Rourke: IP 7.1 ERA 7.37 K/9 22.1 H/9 3.68 BA .126 WHIP 1.09 GO/AO 0.25 K/BB 18:5 Darnell: IP 13 ERA 2.08 K/9 8.31 H/9 10.4 BA .154 WHIP 1.54 GO/AO 1.30 K/BB 12:5 Rogers: IP 36 ERA 1.50 K/9 9.00 H/9 5.23 BA .178 WHIP 0.64 GO/AO 2.10 K/BB 36:2
  3. Rogers will likely never be a MLB starter, but let the winnowing out, LHRP tryouts begin without him for now. I suspect that Duensing will eventually blow up like Thompson. And then Darnell will get his shot, if not beforehand should O'Rourke falter.
  4. O'Rourke up. He would fill the 40th roster spot, I believe?
  5. Here's what he was doing at the top end of his game at Louisville. The report quoted his Louisville coach saying "the reason he wanted to go to college was to learn how to pitch." The report mentions the Twins previous drafting of Burdi back in 2011 out of HS, they obviously have been intent on him "unlearning" for some time, what he was doing previous to coming to the Twins in 2014: https://youtu.be/F49Pwt1d-Ao
  6. How about for starters by trying a plan different than the cookie cutter one they currently employ and clearly hasn't worked? And the "scrapping" has almost all come about by dumpster diving and questionable FA deals and trades, not from within- which was my main point, Glen Perkins being the exception that proves the rule. The game has completely evolved away from the Twins way of thinking, they need to do a careful examination of their current developmental pitching philosophies.
  7. Great point, and curious that neither the Twins or the prospect analysts have granted him high prospect status. All he has done is strike people out at a rate averaging 38% at all levels. This year in the FSL, he led all pitchers over 30 IP in BA, ERA and FIP. And he was 2nd in K/9 and K%. It will be interesting to see if he maintains those types of numbers over the next two levels and eventually is given a major league chance to be this type of pitcher down the road. As of right now... he has Anthony Slama written all over him.
  8. Valid and fair points, I still would have found out where his Peter Principle limit- evidently AA- was last year, and forced that whole "carrot-stick" and "responding" process to already have been underway for a year now and not lost this year of development. And if all you say is true, Radcliff's comments then sound more like they're directed at Burdi, in "See, I told you so" fashion- which certainly accomplishes little and sounds almost defensive in nature. I've still gotta think it's done quite differently in other orgs. The problem, and hole in your theory is, the Twins don't have ANY recent history of a general working plan for prospect bullpen arms, of developmental success stories of ultimately bringing up strike out pitchers to the major league level (the last being Perkins, and only after failing as both a starter and nearly finding his way out of the organization)... and they also failed miserably at getting their collective staff K/9 rates- for either starters or relievers- to even the median league level. In truth, the Twins Team K/9 for RPs has been last in 4 of the last 5 years. And this has been systemic, the combined RP stats from 2004-15- that's going on TWELVE years- also has the Twins last in K/9.
  9. Was it really "perfectly reasonable" a year ago to have him strike out nearly 50% of the clearly overmatched hitters he faced over his entire 2014 tenure? I don't think anyone is saying that there isn't a plan there. But one year after his pro debut, it's hard to argue that it's been a good plan, in point of fact, it's been a failed plan thus far. Jake Reed was on a similar plan, with similar bad second-year results. And going back specifically to Burdi, being placed to start out your pro career at a performance level commensurate with your current abilities, which one year ago was A+--> and then moving as quickly to AA as performance would merit, would NOT HAVE BEEN "fast-tracking." As far as the plan going forward, if he's striking out at a 50% clip, even more overmatched hitters in the major league sized parks in the FSL, how does that address the areas of concern expressed by Radcliff: But AA is currently not where Burdi is at. And how do you "figure some (of those) things out" at a lower level? Hopefully, this demotion is just for a couple weeks, and then the real plan is enacted back at his appropriate competitive level.
  10. Uhh, no. What Sano not playing yet at 3rd in favor of Plouffe tells me that Plouffe is the superior option at this point in tme, while in the midst of a pennant race. And that Sano's bat is always going to be his superior tool. At this very early point in Sano's major league career, what it doesn't mean is that Sano has "more of a future at his current position DH."
  11. Yep, I applaud the Twins. This is the best move to stop the bleeding, and give the Twins a decent chance of winning a number of games over the next couple of weeks, not just a May start or two. (And I do enjoy the irony of you using the KC comp... the Davis/Shields trade transformed the Royals)
  12. It is a lost year, as guys like Burdi, with his flame-throwing ways and his fairly violent delivery, end up either losing velocity or top effectiveness- or both, and flaming out... or also, in certain cases, suffering catastrophic injury and then having to reinvent themselves- if they're luck to still have major league career options. I don't think anyone has said that he is a sure thing- and extremely rare (perhaps never?) has a college RP been taken in the 1st round. But I go back to my first statements, it was a complete waste to have Burdi striking out almost 50% of the mostly helpless batters he faced. Even Radcliff acknowledges that the plan has been a failure- the Twins have demonstrated now and previously that they really don't know what to do to prepare young strikeout throwers for the majors- look no further than their K/9 numbers, this would not have happened at many other clubs who bring up guys with the same proclivities, but less raw talent than Burdi. On those other teams, guys like this are ready to go to the show by age 23, or sometimes earlier The same type of thing has happened to Jake Reed. The plan isn't working. Instead of having both of these guys by their 3rd year, a year has now been thrown away in attempt to meet that goal.
  13. I guess it wasn't that obvious to the powers that be...
  14. Another late inning debacle in KC last night. Was Molitor keeping Gibson in on Friday night well past 100 pitches and a major scoring threat in the works, as well as toying with a series of unsatisfactory options in the late inning last night painting a vivid enough picture that things are going to have to change drastically in the Twins pen if they are going to have any chance to compete in the second half? And now we have Chris Mitchell from Fangraphs jumping on the bandwagon, while making a rock-solid case why Rogers should be given a shot to step into the breach. Although Mitchell writes about Taylor Rogers as if he just happened upon another unknown oddity (and why not, fellow Fangaphs writer, Kiley McDaniel had all but written him off in ST as any kind of key contributor for the Twins any time soon), whereas, the conclusion Mitchell here reaches, and the title of his article aren't too subtle... in case anyone in the Twins FO might have decided just to skip past his tome, it kind-of is designed to get their attention: Lefties Can't Touch Taylor Rogers And Mitchell left out some of "Rogers Greatest Hits" against LHBs, like his 35/2 K/BB for example, and his .174 BA and 0.63 WHIP. Come onTerry, I know you know this stuff, if not now, when?
  15. Bernier's not going anywhere, cleared waivers (remember when some actually worried if he was exposed?) and still suiting up for the Wings. He'll be coaching in the Twins system soon.
  16. Fryer is gone for a couple weeks to the Pan Am games. Arcia is starting to hit again now if they want a LH bench bat.
  17. Placeholder, good soldier credit, etc....
  18. Nope, not quite entirely accurate. The Twins remain at 39 on the 40-man, another move is likely coming, possibly a waiver claim or a trade. The other possibility is adding Rogers to the 40-man- he's scheduled to start for Rochester tomorrow.
  19. After last night, he has to get a shot while they're still in the hunt. Plus, Tonkin struck out 8 of 9 batters faced last night, sure would like to think that eventually he stats consistently enough to stick. It would be nice to have a L-R reliable combination to compliment Fien in the late innings leading to Perkins.
  20. Neither is the guy we had out there...
  21. Patience should not be nearly as requisite for flame-throwing college relievers. Especially when multiple scouting services going into the draft projected him as a mid-1st rounder, and possessing a top of the scale slider. Guys with Burdi's pedigree and type of stuff and delivery historically have a short shelf life- by their very nature they need to be fast-tracked. One year on, and almost to the day from his pro debut, the Twins now have Burdi going backwards, and pitching at the level he should have started out in- any way you slice it, that's a lost year.
  22. Seth. any idea of the Twins' expectations and hopes for Arraez? His bio and stat line looks very intriguing, with a whole lot to like: Left hand-hitting middle infielder. Has hit a ton of singles and doubles at both levels thus far. Takes more walks than strikes out at both levels thus far. He went for 3-6 again today, Saturday, with two more doubles. He's a "young" 18 years of age. It appears that the Twins are giving him more SS reps this season. I suspect that there are issues with the glove, plus he's so young, or we would have heard more about him to this point... but is there any info that leads you to believe he's a potential Top 30 guy in the near future?
  23. Would have been nice to see Perkins in that game.
