  1. He's no doubt on a strict innings limit, let him get his feet wet at the next level, and have his last 5-6 starts be in AA or AAA.
  2. It's easy to say people need days off, because it's true. As Mike said, there are plenty of ABs for everyone to avoid giving Nunez, et al, too many of those available ABs. Arcia might not start every day, and he shouldn't be hitting against most LHP regardless, but he can be inserted into most every game to PH in which he's not starting. Here's how the "magic fix" has gone for Arcia the past 3 seasons: Arcia's 12-game July demotion to AAA in July, 2013: .375/.490/.725/(1.215) Arcia's first 12 games after MLB call-up in Aug, 2013: .298/.353/.660/(1.013) Arcia's last 11 dates before MLB call-up in 2014: .317/.378/.756/(1.154) Arcia's first 11 dates after MLB call-up in 2014: .378/.378/.733/(1.111) Arcia's last 11 dates at AAA in 2015: .354/.392/.771/(1.163) Perhaps there's a possible pattern worth pursuing here?
  3. There's room for both. What's wrong with assigning a Thome role for Arcia?
  4. Yep. He's hitting a ton so far in AAA, but he's obviously got the yips in the field. I'm sure this temporarily derails the Twins' "master plan" for moving up Polanco. Maybe he settles down by the end of July. If not, the Twins need for Esco to get hot or look more seriously outside the organization.
  5. Yeah, but I think you have to throw in Latos' name to make that deal. The Marlins have a history of shedding payroll and holding a fire sale on their expensive contracts in down seasons. To get one of the two quality RPs, you would probably have to be willing to take on Latos's contract and perhaps one more, such as Martin Prado (part of his salary is paid by the Yankees). With Santana being unavailable in postseason, Latos could make a strong 4th SP option.
  6. Huh? Tongue in cheek response? Can't tell for sure w/o a sarc tag. Arcia 's currently on an 11-game hitting streak. In those 11 games, his slash line is ..354/392/.771/(1.163), with a .417 ISO and 6 HR and 8 XBH. Hard to see how he can do much better than that.
  7. Because the current SS situation is appallingly substandard for a contending team. Escobar is a utility player, not a starting SS on a legit contender- he's below replacement value in fWAR terms. Santana is obviously even worse in fWAR value. Nunez is perfectly fine as a once or twice a week SS, plus a PR/PH- he is currently sporting a +0.7bWAR and OPS+of 122. Both the pen and SS can be addressed by dealing with the right team or teams- start with Miami and San Diego (already talking with the Padres- Clint Barmes would be a perfectly acceptable SS for the second half run- he has playoff experience and is sure-handed at the position), both are teams who have shown they're willing to move aggressively. If the Twins would be willing to take on a bad contract, Miami might part with one of their MIs.
  8. Nunez and another SS via trade.
  9. The numbers of the few relief pitchers that have made it to the Twins support the notion that they are in no way comparable to the the entire AL (or NL), ie, much worse in the peripheral numbers that matter most for RPs, and at the bottom of MLB year after year .
  10. But not using the other information that is also out there that confirms that Burdi's delivery has been altered severely from his college days. and that the results this year have been just short of disastrous. No need to be coy or obtuse, there's no denying, one year on under the MN Twins tutelage, there have been no injuries or personal crises of confidence upon which to lay blame, the Twins coaching and Burdi's response to that coaching has led directly to where Nick Burdi is at today.
  11. Yes. If not now, in the midst of a pennant race, when runs have been increasingly harder to come by, when? Having bench depth for late game advantageous ABs, and expanded breadth of L-R power options in the lineup. Especially with a super-rangy guy in CF who can cover for Arcia much of the time. What's not to like?
  12. So much for the "paper of record". Typification of NYC in their own reality bubble.
  13. How about Mat Latos AND either AJ Ramos or Carter Capps in trade? The Marlins are definitely sellers and payroll cutters- both would be big upgrades, plus renting latos at low current value, and overall not for the cost of mortgaging the farm.
  14. Especially true after the defense gets another upgrade with the return of Buxton, and hopefully the bullpen gets its own "fix". No more 13 man pitching staffs and solid OF defense gives the manager a more L-R lineup flexibility and actually/finally offers legitimate bench options in the late innings.
  15. Yes. But if we're talking trade, try getting younger guys first rather than trying to squeeze one more season out of aging hulks with expired sell by dates like Benoit. Miami loves to make in-season trades, they're cooked for 2015 and Loria is probably itching to pick up the phone. Either Carter Capps (age 24) and AJ Ramos (age 28), with at least 3 years of team control, could both be had if the Twins were willing to pick up another of the many bad contracts that the Marlins are stuck with, ie.... (Prado could help the Twins in multple roles ala Nunez, Dunn could be the LHRP they need, many other younger pitchers than Benoit to bolster the pen). Or the Twins could go more blockbuster, and get, along with Carter Capps and another bad contract, Adeiny Hechevarria to play SS OR Dee Gordon to play 2nd and move Dozier to SS- Gordon might be pumped to play on a contender that also has his brother in the fold. It would probably cost you Berrios and/or Kepler, among others, so no way Ryan would do it, but the Marlins have a history of making sweeping deals and throwing away a lot of talent- it wouldn't hurt to kick some Marlin tires.
  16. For those who have been predicting that the Twins will be out of the hunt by August or September, so "what's all the bother with pretending that they are competitive?".... This is why a team like the Twins had/has to do whatever it takes within reason to hang close and stay relevant. Cabrera, and now Gordon, have gone down with significant injuries, the door to the AL Central crown has just been opened a lot wider.
  17. Plouffe at SS or 2B? No. No. No. The guy has finally stabilized his career track and established solid trade value in that second tier of guys, just below the elite 3Bs (ranks 9th in total fWAR for 2014-15). The pitching staff would probably stage an open revolt if the infield were to be disrupted to this level- and adding a rookie to the left side of the infield. Dozier OTOH would have the best OPS+ over all other AL SS by a wide margin, presumably without much, if any, dropoff defensively with respect to the current SS options. Perhaps Dozier at SS and Polanco at 2B would be a potential solution for the second half run.
  18. We can't deny that Molitor and Ryan have handed the job to Santana from the very day of Molitor's hiring.
  19. No doubt that Slegers and Eades have had nice seasons- kudos to the level of coaching in the Ft Myers complex for helping guys bring out their best. (And Eades was in shut-down mode again today- 7 IP 1 ER). But Hu is a year younger than Slegers and 2 years younger than Eades, with better peripherals, plus a terrific AAA start. Assuming Hu is on a strict innings limitation, he probably only has 5-6 more starts- I'd like to see them at a higher level as a great jumping- off point going into next season.
  20. And now even management is getting giddy, over his defense. For the present, Paul Molitor says he has passed his first test at 3rd, but work continues behind the scenes to gradually expand his defensive playing options : Praise for Sano keeps coming, this time for his glove at third base And then from Terry Ryan, rare and pretty effusive praise for Sano, leaving little doubt that the Twins ultimately seem confident in Sano as a future mainstay at the Hot Corner:
  21. Looks like both Hu and Jorge are overdue for promotions. Jorge can claim Hu's spot in Ft Myers. Is there someone currently in Chattanooga better than Hu holding this up? Jorge has had a remarkable turnaround from his 2014 Class A experience.
  22. How well is Miguel Sano adjusting to major league pitching? Over his first week, Sano's tied for 2nd in hard-hit-balls percentage, with Mike Trout @ 64.3%, and behind only JD Martinez. Not bad company, Kid. http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=y&type=2&season=2015&month=7&season1=2015&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&sort=19,d
  23. He's pretty much been solid at the plate since the end of April. He was very impressive, as well as selective, when I saw him in early May- hitting the ball hard to all fields. He's definitely not your typical swing-for-the-fences masher. He changed from a heavy FB pull guy in April, to a LD but patient, spray it to all fields power hitter in May and June. Over his first week, he's tied for 2nd in hard-hit balls percentage, with Mike Trout, and behind only JD Martinez. Not bad company, Kid. http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=y&type=2&season=2015&month=7&season1=2015&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&sort=19,d
  24. Those are usually the types of chances he's screwed up on and caused the bulk of his errors.
