  1. Saw it last night on ESPN. Wow. Even the baby seal-clubbers on this site have to appreciate the athleticism. It might be the catch of the year thus far, but it's quite likely he'll make at least a dozen more before the season's over- Wow.
  2. To me, it was all about the Burton. And no, no bite here on the Slama-bait;)
  3. Gibson is the obvious #1 on the replacement list. After that it's a crapshoot, Meyer could pitch back-to-back no-nos and the earliest call-up would still be September, I suspect May would be in a similar scenario. And even if they could make good trades for both of the aforementioned, I do wonder if they would risk going up to 3 months of the season with Gibson (restricted innings), Deduno, DeVries and Hendriks as the only potential replacements for the 2.
  4. Sano Slam!
  5. No need to dangle Morneau. If they love Lew Ford, think of what we could get for Jeff Clement!
  6. That's why I said "impossible dream" and referenced my sarcastic post made at the time of the signing, referencing Ryan's genius in recognizing talent "better than the numbers would indicate" that would ultimately lead to a great trade for a prospect before the deadline. Still, the Twins would be foolish to, once again, not consider all options for trading guys at their highs and especially this year when the competitive balance in baseball could mean more teams than usual desperate to bolster their lineups for a second half in-it-to-win-it run. Any C+/B- pitching prospect or reclamation project with at least a chance to contribute at the ML level would suffice in return.
  7. I don't think anyone has ever advocated signing Slowey to a long-term deal. His salary peaked in 2010 at $2.75M and he wasn't in any position to sign a long term deal and his health concerns precluded any arbitration awards, he's not even elibible for FA until 2015. meanwhile Blackie has done less than nothing over these last 3 years for a grand total of $13.25M.
  8. I guess you count yourself among the "real fans" then? It's a "shame to be shaming" you? Do I have that right? Is someone forcing you to read the thread or enter the discussion? I think you are in the midst of some projection here, as it appears to be you strutting your ego about what you deem important, or not. And then finish with the scatalogical reference. Nice.
  9. Uhh, quite an expensive mistake for a club in the midst of returning to their spendthrift ways.
  10. Uhh, I intended to only include the time that Slowey was healthy, none of the time when he wasn't- it's a direct apples-to-apples comparison timeline of the first 4 full years of their careers, Slowey's effectiveness as a starter is better, Blackburn was better as a "healthy" but very mediocre and inconsistent innings-eater, Slowey, as history has demonstrated, had something very wrong with him in April-May of 2011- with the level of Twins culpability up for debate, so you sorta got it completly wrong. In addition Blackburn was horrible in 2010 (he was ranked 99th out of 102 SPs by Fangraphs with a 5.42 ERA) and though he started OK in 2011, he ended up so ineffectively bad in July and August of that year (an ERA just under 7.00- every start was a struggle to even get to the 5th inning) he was shut down for the year just past mid-August and obviously got even worse last year, so epically bad (7.39 ERA) that he most likely, at age 31, is done for his career. By contrast, Slowey, at age 28, appears to have become healthy enough again to at least have a small-to-medium chance at reviving his career.
  11. In his first full year as a starter, 2008, his best month of the season was also April, when his ERA was 4.50. 09 was the one exception in his 5 year SP run when April wasn't his best month. Got to give credit where credit is due. He's pitching with one part gutsNguile, one part skill and a hefty amount of luck, some hard hit balls turned into outs and DPs tonight. I'll enjoy it as long as it lasts, it sure is fun to see someone out there who appears to know how to pitch within his limitations. Should Correia somehow put in a strong first half to the season, my impossible dream of him becoming attractive trade deadline bait might somehow come to fruition. Hopefully, the AAA/AA SP options keep developing at a fast rate, making the willingness to trade Correia at a high point in his value, a reality- A Big Win-Win for the Twins and Correia- who could go to a contender.
  12. Slowey wasn't a "great asset", but he was clearly better than Blackburn over the 4-year arc preceding 2011, and Blackburn who was supposedly "healthy" going into 2011 as opposed to Slowey, had seen his career essentially collapse in 2010.
  13. Going into 2011, here are some of the 2007-2010 collective numbers for Slowey and Blackburn: Slowey K*9 6.9/ K% 18 /xFIP 4.16 /K*BB 4.60 /WHIP 1.28/WAR 7.3 Blackie K*9 5.6/ K%10.9/xFIP 4.46 /K*BB 2.17 /WHIP 1.39/WAR 5.6
  14. Gosh, I wonder where the source for those reports came from?
  15. Good spot for rookies and 2nd year men to bat, waiting for an opening to develop later in the season. Look at today's lineup, Parm has a temporary promotion to the #5 spot with Willingham out. Arcia has the #7 place. I would imagine if/when they move Morneau and Willingham, Parmelee will be right there somewhere in the middle order with Plouffe and Arcia. (In a nothing-to-lose season and without viable options, I actually adovcated experimenting with Parmelee in the 2-hole if Gardy refused to move Mauer there).
  16. Sounds like the Hammer has a little flu.
  17. My take is that your spot in the order is one more reflection of your performance relative to your "peers" (as perceived by the managers who place them there in the order). Not a perfect fit or match by any means, but bottom of the order guys are usually there for similar reasons.
  18. In the face of the evidence you've conveniently ignored, the whole premise of your 2 posts seems disingenuous to me. Slowey has been unhealthy for the last 2 years- partially as a direct result by Twins management in the manner of his usage. Combine that self-inflicted wound with the media trashing campaign and perceived value was resultantly absolutely obliterated by the Twins.
  19. Baker got somewhat similar treatment, more of a manhood questioning check, than a character check.
  20. I feel like the commitment to paying Correia $10M is beyond annoying- I hope I'm miraculously proven wrong, but his peripherals suggest inevitable implosion. Slowey isn't going to maintain an ERA+ of 193, and he wasn't an angel in the whole divorce process, but the Twins still have to be able to get more in value when they shed and acquire personnel and not go on badmouthing media campaigns that destroy perceived player value. Did the team "want" him to rank at #142 out of 143 SPs in baseball in 2013? Or #195 out of 199 for 2012-13 combined. Or top out as the worst in all of baseball's SPs in 2013, with an ERA of 7.39? But hey, he's a good soldier.
  21. Parm (3 Es) actually hasn't been too bad for a guy batting #7, or even as a RF. Here's his slash thus far: 267/361/367/728 Here's the MLB #7 avg: 240/294/363/657 Here's the RF MLB avg: 261/327/421/747 He's also sporting a very high BB% @ ~14%, second highest on the team behind Willingham.
  22. Correction- Slowey's ERA after 3 starts is 2.04. He's as likely to regress as Correia is- but he is now apparently in much better health, which he clearly hasn't been under 3 team's watch over the last 2 seasons. The larger point being made was it's going to cost the Twins $10M to find out the hard truth of Correia's actual worth. Going back a couple years, the Twins made a decision to pay, and commit to, long-term, a guy with clearly inferior stuff. And then came the injury and internal brouhaha (not necessarily in that order). He's currently a ERA+ guy of 193. I think most fans would be thrilled if we still had a guy with Slowey's career ERA+ when he was healthy as a MN Twin of around 95. Other than Correia- at ERA+ of 132- the other starters are in the 40s and 50s (shades of 2011-12). The Twins SP staff as a group is at the bottom of MLB in ERA, K/9, K%, OBA, WHIP, etc. etc. (other than WHIP, their peripheral numbers are WAAY below even the 29th-ranked team).
  23. How right you are! And I'll add the very real element of fear. Fear of failure, sure, but the very real physical fear of taking one to the head or other prone area- as a LH hitter, I remember having a hard time digging in against southpaws without bailing out against the hook or a guy who could throw "heat" ( we had one LH guy on our college team who made it up for a short and marginal career on the Giants as a reliever, I was lucky enough to get the bat on a few- and that was in BP).
  24. Thanks for supplying the apt illustration. "Grains of sand" kind of describes the foundation that's been built for this current Twins season- and also for Gardy's job security. Now that you've supplied the written pictoral, I'm sure Snepp can snap up the actual pictoral for us in the the hate-by-numbers crowd.
  25. I'm cymbal-less.
