    Who said anything about promoting Buxton on "their" timeline? Using objective criteria for how and when Buxton should be promoted has been the point of this entire thread. With a rarefied talent such as Buxton, the "other moves" machinations as an excuse for not fast-tracking is a flimsy one, at best. That Buxton hasn't been moved, what with the trading of the only 2 legitimate major league CFs and the resultant crying need for projectable CFers up and down the organization, it's just another par for the course example of the Twins slowplay, ala, Gibson, Sano. It's certainly not surprising, for the Twins organization, past is prologue, it's the reason I started the thread.

    Actually it's 3 really great starts in the last 9, not 10. And having the second best FIP of 2.96 in the International League is pedestrian, certainly no "pressing need to expose" the poor baby to the oh-so-scary next level of competition. And yes, those June numbers of 2.08 ERA, with a 1.19 WHIP and 6.92 K/9 while only gong 6 or 7 innings, including one game each of 0, 1, 2, and 3 runs scored disaqualify Gibson from promotion. Let's wait until he throws back-to-back perfect game no-hitters before we're finally convinced that he's "consistent" enough....

    The inconsistency myth has now officially become The Big Lie. I've never seen an organization and its legion of lock-step supporters more willing to baby and coddle a clearly more-than-capable-and-ready MAN, he is not a wet-behind-the-ears 19 year old prospect, gee whiz, the guy's almost 26!

    7 of 9 starts is well beyond "consistent". Few starting pitchers at any level can demonstrate this ratio of success. Again, his 2nd start in May was the turning point. 9 inning shutout. 3rd start in May was a clinker. 4th start, near no-hitter, complete game shutout. 4th start, 8 inning shutout. That 4th start was just about one month ago to the day. It was pretty clear that the alternating pattern of good/bad was broken. Now it was: 3 lights out outings w/1 bad. Here's Gibson's line in his last 9 starts (which includes the above numbers): 2.36 ERA/ 7.67 K*9/1.25 WHIP. He's essentially spinning his wheels at this point. This from a guy who was a prospective starting rotation member in Spring Training who was on an innings limitation, and the Twins had set the conditional outcome in that they were looking for the turnaround consistent with a guy safely beyond his TJ-recovery rustiness to assure them that he was now reliable enough to insert into the rotation. He's been more than ready for a month now and has lost a month's worth of potential major league developmental innings in the process.

    Not a bit. Your highlighted paragraphs above says it all. They are who we thought they were. The win total is going to end up artificially inflated due to the dumbing-down of the schedule, but I still doubt that the Twins will hit 77 wins (I predicted 66-75 in the preseason poll, I'm sticking to it). I find it extremely odd that not understanding the strength of schedule issue and the fan ecstasy when the Twins sweep the likes of the Brewers and White Sox even skews the opinions of guys like Olney, who should clearly know better. It's just disappointing that they didn't make a stronger effort in the off-season to better fill the holes with the oodles of available dollars.

    Impressive numbers, unfortunately he's teased us in the past for a couple weeks or so of flurried production. I'd like to think he's put his struggles and continued horrendous slumps in the past, many were related to the pressures of playing SS, but not this year- let's see if he can sustain something close to this as the long, hot summer continues. Most importantly, although he's improved his performance against right-handers a good little bit, his .621 OPS in 2013 (.577 career OPS) makes him pretty doubtful long-term and is going to hold him way back when up against someone with the potential of Rosario and it appears SS is never going to be a viable option for him. Just to put it into perspective, both his OPS and OBP rank 17th of 20 qualifying second basemen.

    7 out of 9 starts of very good-to-lights-out performaces is beyond the means of realistic expectations for 'consistency" of virtually every starting pitcher in AAA and in the Majors. These June innings are largely wasted having Gibson throw them in AAA. The string of 3 of 4 lights out starts, including the near no-hitter in early May should have been all the Twins needed to see to move him up to start gaining major league experience in anticipation of him at the top of the rotation in 2014. The Andrew Albers being "the No. 1 guy for the next call-up" comment by Terry Ryan just added further insult to fans' intelligence in this increasingly bizarre situation.

    You might be searching for agreement on the statement in bold, but the facts don't hold up. He pitched a brilliant complete game shutout 9 starts ago- in early May. And then he followed that up with a near no-hitter, complete game shutout, 7 starts ago and then an 8 inning shutout 6 starts ago. He's had AAA figured out since early May, these are the facts. Ryan has his reasons, no doubt, but none of them with respect to Gibson appear to be associated with making the big league club, or Gibson's career arc, better, in 2013. As johnnydakota stated so well, isn't this the year to figure out who has the chops to help the club return to competitiveness as soon as possible? It's hard for a player to improve when he is forced to continue to compete at a level he's clearly mastered. Frequently, it's just human nature to see that staleness, lack of focus and bad habits can set in. (See Sano in 2012 and 2013, Buxton in 2013-- challenging guys who clearly are cuts above their current level can only serve to bring out the raw talent at a faster pace).

    I echo your sentiments. Don't get me wrong, it's good to see another prospect emerge for future consideration to the big league rotation. But this is his 3rd year in AA. He's doing this year what he probably should have been doing last year. Hopefully, he's really figured things out and can be promoted faster to AAA than Buxton and Gibson are being pushed along to their own proper levels within the organization. A good showing in the last 2 months in Rochester and it gives the Twins more options for adding and most importantly removing people from the starting pitching depth chart at the trading deadline and come 2014.

Actually, he was really, really good 7 and 6 starts ago. 7 starts ago, he went 7 2/3 of no-hit ball before settling for another 9 inning, 3-hit shutout. And 6 starts ago, another shutout. And then one clinker, followed by 4 good starts in June, with a June ERA of 2.08. Your observation doesn't hold up to scrutiny, what's the point?, what's so important about Gibson demonstating he'd mastered AAA in early May, and continues to master AAA in late June? Especially when he's on an innings limit and now nearly all of his potentially experience-building valuable major league innings in a major league down year are gone.

    Brilliant? Maybe. Ahh... but Consistent? 7 of his last 8 starts ranging from: "very good" to "lights out" clearly doesn't meet that particular standard so publicly set by Twins management as "the reason" for keeping Gibson down. Gibson will now be around 100 IP in AAA after his next start, and within 4 months of his 26th birthday. The only thing that makes anything close to sense at this point is that the Twins are looking to maximize current SP potential values by showcasing them through the deadline, in anticipation of a trade. With now only around 5-6 major league starts left available to Gibson, the FO may as well start thinking about what new excuses they'll be using to keep him down in Rochester in 2014 in order to keep the arb clock from ticking.

    I checked Correia's game log- he too, has a Marlins game, to go along with a reeling Brewers and punchless Royals game, oh, he also has not 1, but 2 games against the White Sox, who are the 29th-rated team in hitting, just one place above Miami. Try again on your rationalizations.

    Still better than Carreia- who ducked out on pitching at Detroit- to get the Brewers, instead 2 days later, Marucm is particularly superior with the FIP.

    .......Because he didn't have much of a spring training and was coming off a preseason leg injury. Since May 10, his ERA has dropped significantly from 8.59 to 5.76- it was actually below 5.00 before his last couple of clinkers--- and with that said, still, he's striking guys out at Career High levels, meanwhile his season FIP is a stellar 3.27, nearly a full run below his career average and that reveals that his overall 2013 season ERA is a very poor indicator on his true effectiveness this season.

    It usually helps when you type a statement out that you actually glance at the numbers beforehand. Marcum, without a spring training per se, actually has been better than Correia since May1 before last night (I haven't glanced at KC's updated numbers...there's an assignment right there....paging drjim!).

    Edwin Jackson was on a one year deal in 2012. Those are the kind of deals that don't come back to bite you (Paul Maholm, Eric Bedard....etc.), not like the dumb one the Cubs did this year.

    The vast gulf in talent difference between Liriano and Slowey is enormous. Liriano's stuff is glowingly electric, whereas Slowey's stuff is akin to rubbing 2 sticks together. The Twins dithered on what exactly to do with Liriano and they resultantly yet again, sold near his low point. You just can't do that continually with the few real elite talents that come through an organization and hope to stay competitive. What they appeared to always have with Francisco was "a failure to communicate." Knowing this reccurent fact appeared uncorrectable over his tenure here, they should have traded him at his peak after 2010, as many of us were suggesting. Instead they settled for a glorified LOOGY, and probably at best, a marginal utility option.

    His overall walk rate has only improved marginally from last year. The big thing I see is a pitcher who has similar numbers to last year in AA with the big exceptions being a 1.31 drop in ERA (huge) and a 10% better LOB% rate. He's clearly matured some and learned how to deal with his fits of wildness pretty effectively.

    I guess the Twins FO will have to use the "consistent" argument in a different way with May, his performance this season isn't Gibsonly enough for that excuse. I've been tracking his season's performance closely this year. His postgame game comments "consistenly" suggest that he has matured, he appears to intellectually understand the game plan and path to his ultimate success, in the process he has stayed on task to specifically address his areas of weakness. I think he's now going over the final hurdle headed toward the team decision to continue his path to the majors as a starter. Very encouraging trends, and much underreported and underappreciated developments. Well done, Boone.
