  1. They really only need a placeholder at the position- the Twins have place-holding 1B-men to spare- at least 2 guys (one out of options) who deserve a fair shot at a season's worth of PAs. And the Twins could really use Castro as their 2nd backstop. It would no doubt cost you an additional prospect, but not a top ten guy. I hope the Twins are on speed-dial. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/03/astros-inquiring-on-first-basemen.html
  2. Gardy would just "sigh" right back at you. (A hammer hit to the head would merely leave him dazed......but unfazed). Then he'd hand you the lineup, daring you to fill it out for him....and then finally say to you in a fit of exasperation: "C'mon, this is simple stuff!" (And his admitted strategy for 2014 confirms more evidence to my theory that the Twns offensive production is destined to crater for the combined production from the C/1B/DH).
  3. You nailed it, JC. It's hard to imagine a situation where Correia would draw more in trade than he would this week. (And it still won't be all that much, but it will serve to bust the logjam, just like in the case of Doumit- Get.Her.Done.)
  4. As I said, money is fungible, money saved in one area can be allotted elsewhere- getting your draft money "paid for" gives you more options in areas to improve. And certainly, the Twins have not always spent all of their avalable funds in both of the prospect areas in the past. I hope that moving a salary for a rebuilding team would mean the chance for more flexibility for doing things like: -Picking up a better player on an unexpired contract via trade. -Signing Kendrys Morales in June at a discount for multiple years. -Going over the International limit should there be a bidding war on a coveted prospect. -Signing a prospective player from Cuba or other country, not subject to the established limits. And I agree with you on Diamond and Worley at this point. But starting out with Gibson and Deduno might be worth considering.
  5. As I said, money is fungible. The amount won't be changed, but now you have those signing exercises largely "paid for", freeing up those previously budgeted funds for other areas to improve the club.
  6. I really like that scenario. It's what a rebuilding team should look like, not giving more starts to a guy with an expiring contract. And especially leaving the door ajar for Meyer to bust through in June or July. A lot of questions for 2015 can be fully answered with this plan.
  7. Optimist? It is incumbent on the Twins to move Correia whenever it is that they can maximize value, be it in the next 2 weeks, or any time up through the deadline. Others have posted, and are probably right- how much demand is really out there for KC? Because of the lack of a complete overhaul and upgrade offensively this offseason, the Twins already were looking like they were punting this year, in anticipation of continuing to put the pieces in place for 2015 being "the turn" for the better. (Sano's TJ may or may not have messed up that timetable a bit).
  8. Price isn't a FA until 2016. He will make $14M this year.
  9. how about Deduno and Gibson at 4 and 5 (or Johnson)? Regardless of Correia's value, wouldn't that $5.5M come in handy in signing draft picks and internationals later this year (money is fungible)?
  10. A one-position guy? It seems to me that they would go first the familiarity route with Wilkin Ramirez as the RH bench bat if CC flounders.
  11. Seems like a good trade fit could be had with the Braves? They have the type of pieces the Rays covet in a trade for a departing star. Any thing in the wind in that regard in Hotlanta?
  12. They are in the major process of cutting back the payroll/positioning to extend the top players. A Drew signing would go directly against that strategy. How about offering them Florimon?
  13. Agreed. But isn't a David Price deal bound to happen at almost any given moment?
  14. What scenario, besides Plouffe getting injured, do you envision in which Romero gets called up?
  15. Excellent post overall, with the exception that I honestly think that, sadly, Florimon has already reached his offensive potential. There's a reason why he toiled in the minors for 8 years and was available for free on the waiver wire. And the one "tool" that Escobar apparently has over Florimon is the ability to play multiple positions at a reasonably competent level, and even as an emergency Catcher. Once Florimon is eligible for Arb in 2016, his "value" will be closely tied with how much and how many teams are willing to play a no-hit, one-position player, near the age of 30, for Millions of Dollars/Year.
  16. Exactly spot on. Perhaps this list of the Top 30 Batters w/ RISP over the last 11 years is helpful in separating the wheat from the chaff (One not-surprising ex-Twin is #10, but one current Twin, who might very well surpirse a lot of folks, is at #23): http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=y&type=1&season=2013&month=29&season1=1901&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0
  17. Ain't that the truth? TK was badmouthing Todd Walker even before he was forced to put him in the starting lineup. Probably held a huge "Welcome to the Twins" party for the immortal Todd Sears, when they traded Walker in 2000. And another party for the arrival of "The Luis Rivas Era."
  18. Ugh. Even Gardy has seemed to have learned his lesson on the harm to the offense that the 3 catcher security blanket scenario does to the team. I'd take Parmelee's bat over what Hermann can potentially contribute (Kubel?). And with Escobar as your emergency catcher, Hermann or Fryer are a one-day flight away from Rochester to take the back-up spot in the event of an injury.
  19. I don't think anyone thinks he has "good" value, but with a marginal starter like KC, it's really important to move him at a perceived high point, when he has "some" value, and when teams looking for arms to fill out their roster are most motivated to do so- I trust the Twins are on top of all of the potential scenarios for the "right circumstances" to come together to pull the trigger- either in the next 2 weeks, or when the urgent need arises elsewhere, as it inevitably will. It would be nice to get a little something of a parting gift from KC's contract AND open the way for the younger arms to get their rightful chance to become rebuild-building blocks to the next competitive team.
  20. Nope, that still doesn't do it for me.
  21. With regards to Pinto, Gardy is already adamantly on the record this spring stating that Pinto will definitely not be DHing. His reasoning? It just gives him nightmares thinking about the chances that a pitcher might have to bat once or twice in 5000 PAs.
  22. I stand by my prediction. All 3 of the last 3 FAs will make out as well, or better than, the original QO.
  23. Thanks alot! The local broadcast team expressed concern about Diamond's control, but little context for the reasons why. With respect to that #5 spot, Gladden thought that Deduno would be excellent in a relief role and didn't want to count out Gibson (or Diamond) yet, but thought it would be completely absurd to bring up 13 pitchers to save a pitcher from DFA- over simply bringing up the best 25 players. (He also thought that Colabello was practically a lock to make the 25-man).
  24. For Josmil's sake, is there a BA Spanish edition?
  25. Truth be told, if a truly accurate assessment was made of a year-long sample of preposterous statements, celebrity entertainers and politicians would flood the zone.
