  1. Are you AJ's agent in another life?
  2. Wow! All 10 guys in this lineup have an asterisk, a question mark, or both, after their names, as far as their potential contribution to the team in 2014. I kind-of wish this was the game they were televising instead. I'm looking forward to John's updates.
  3. I get where you're coming from Halsey. But it is a split squad and some of the guys in today's lineup are batting in their seasonal positional roles, so Gardy probably wants to get some of that continuity gong, too. And I guess Gardy thinks it's more useful to have Hicks bat in the spot where the team is most deficient, where Hicks can most help the team during the regular season, and where he'd like Hicks to get the reps in a low-pressure situation.
  4. Are there really any alternatives down there?
  5. Started yesterday and on Friday. 0 for 6 so far.
  6. And a possible opening for Santana if Florimon starts out on the DL?
  7. As exemplary as your sentiments are, not a lot of athletes apply a lot time towards the finer works of Minnesota's own, Robert Pirsig. http://thekneeslider.com/images/pirsig.jpg And there's a definite line between confidently cocky and rubbing your opponent's nose in it. See Puckett, Kirby.
  8. Garza, Lohse, Hardy and Gomez?
  9. Excellent find. Usually an article that has "Notes" in the title is anything BUT "note-"worthy. Not so in this case- more like a Sunday Opus. Pretty meaty stuff, especially regarding Hicks. Let the debate reignite about Hicks' defense. TR says one thing, Baseball Info Solutions says the opposite, Gardy is apparently positioning him in a way that hurts his value, and the "adroit" Hicks possibly goes from "overruled young outfielder" to "more forthcoming source" all within one paragraph while analyzing the situation. I've been concerned about his reaction time and the routes he sometimes took last year. If he's got that chalked up to a nightmare season and it's all behind him now, I'd like to see if he and the Skipper can come to an understanding and see if he can start cheating in a little more regularly.
  10. Good post. I think there are other guys, currently a little muzzled under the existing culture, who will let their inner-cockiness come to full bloom upon the ascendance of your Big Three: !) Pinto, is pretty fearleass at the plate, once he earns the starting job, watch for him assert himself more openly. 2) Dozier, future vocal captain of the IF, hopefully ensconced there a long time, putting guys like Sano, Plouffe, Flori and Vargas in their places when they set the defensive scheme, or when someone screws up. 3) Perkins, already a go-to guy for the press. When things finally turn around here, I'd love to see him publicly make it known that he tells his mates: Get the lead and then just Get on my back and Give me the Dang Ball! 4) Gonsalves and Stewart, maybe too early to tell much, but their backgrounds suggest that they're not afraid of outspokenness and accepting the mantle of leadership roles.
  11. I too, will pay to see hope.....and change.
  12. The quality of the majority of the posts, gramatically and typographically speaking, on the TD site are often superior to those that post "professionally" on the StarTribune site. Mistakes made by paid writers in those venues really make my skin crawl.
  13. Wait. What? That guy from Herman's Hermits is getting in on these grammatical pecadillos, too?
  14. No drama. 3 names mentioned, Gladden generally concurs that they are all gifted athletically. He points out that the conclusion is a bit surprising and a conversation worth sharing. Steil starts the conversaton in motion, gets it into circulation among those of us interested in the MN Twins. Reaction from fans like myself who characterize this stated opinion for its inherent value. Buzz about the team and its up-and-coming prospects (besides Buxton and Sano) for the future ensues. Mission accomplished.
  15. Huh. Bartlett, Bernier, Beresford. The Twins own new and improved version of the Filler-Bs? Even though the apparent motivation to stage his comeback was that he was driving his kid's to soccer practice and driving his wife crazy hanging around the house all day....to get the 2nd utility job, all Bart-ie has to accomplish for Gardy this spring is show some slight semblance of his old self in order to preclude any consideration of the other "B's". Actually at this point, it's likely his job to lose, and with Florimon ailing, I think he's already unofficially penciled in.
  16. Yes, but. When has that stopped the Twins from promoting for need in the recent past?
  17. As many faults as Gladden has as a broadcaster, his World Series ring and crusty personality give him the bona fides to talk more freely about what he really thinks. The fact that he puts Vielma and Santana somewhere in the same athletic realm as Buck carries a lot of weight with both you and me. I've been in on Polanco, after seeing him play previously, we all know of Hicks' gifts as an athlete, now I can get in on Vielma, too. This club is in yawning need for more players who provide the athletically explosive dimension. Steil's comment served multiple purposes, it acknowledged that Gladden was on the right track and should continue that topic on-air for debate as the season progrsses, while it also served to push not only Santana to prove it to be true, but for Buck, Vielma, Polanco and Minier to prove it wrong. Good things to think about on the weekend where we Twins fans lost out on one of our greatest expectations for 2014.
  18. Who's complaining? I was merely observing. It's good to see we reach a reasonable point of agreement so quickly in our discussion. I think we all agree about the fact that athleticism per se does not make you a good ballplayer. The importance and reason why talent evaluators would care, and very much do care and need to put some focus on the athlete, beyond the statement of a specific skillset, is to establish potential floors and ceilings. Buxton's raw athleticism is a key component to him being compared to having the potential ceiling of a Mays, Mantle and Trout. The "specific skills" a prospect currently possesses can become much better when the raw athleticism is harnessed as the player physically matures and his skillset is developed. Again, we seem to have come to an agreement about a farm director's job description. In this case, the part of the job about Steil putting Santana in a very positive, if somewhat exaggerated light, accomplishes many things, it pushes the player to meet the team's expectations, and drives the fans' hope and interest for the future, at no cost to his credibility, and it is precisely the type of thing that the club wants said during Spring Training, when hope and optimism spring most eternal. It even generates barroom and chatroom discussions about the MN Twins, including my "reality check" to his statement, as we're engaging in right now.
  19. Wait. Did I miss the first Plouffe face-plant of 2014 already? Bartlett, Bernier, Romero, Waring. Not a lot exciting alternatives @ 3B. Of course, now we're also talking about our designated starter at SS going on the DL to start the season, so there's yet another compelling reason to consider signing a FA for experienced infield depth and keeping Plouffe challenged..... DeRosa, Inge, Drew? Or does Santana just jump right through the backlog of mediocrity, get the start at SS, w/ Escobar backing up everyone and Bartlett next on the utility depth chart?
  20. Waring looked pretty competent at 3B today. I wouldn't count him out on getting at least of cup of cofffee, ala Dinkleman/Bernier, should Plouffe happen to get nicked up or go on the 15 day DL... if he can hit a few bombs in ST and at Rochester..... and a roster spot opens up.
  21. Can't have too much starting pitching....
  22. I'm well aware of where Santana is from, regardless, I haven't heard word one about any pitching prowess that he might posess. I never said that Mantle, Mays and Trout were the 3 best pure athletes in baseball history, I said that they were "3 of the best". Bo was a freak, and I haven't seen any comparisons on Jordan or Jackson to Santana- but there is now prima facie evidence that Buxton has matched or exceeded Bo's times from Home to First and his times from Home to Third. I also haven't seen any reports that Santana is faster than Buxton. I haven't seen any reports that he has a better arm than Buxton. I haven't heard any reports that he's stronger than Buxton. These are all components of athleticism that don't require "putting things together." And we disagree about Steil's role. Part of it clearly lies in public relations, the club needs everyone in the organization who acts as a spokesman help market the product with their public utterances. Who is there to hold him accountable for the seriousness of his intent and what are the downside consequences for him by using a little descriptive hyperbole to speculate a little loosely about minor league prospects? Again, I have yet to see one outside and neutral evaluation of Santana that even hints at Santana as the most athletic Twins prospect, certainly that is something that would actually help outside evaluators to be taken more seriously, if it were proven to be true- it would also provide them the rationale should their evaluation of his potential not pan out. Your logic just doesn't end up holding true.
  23. If the Twins are seriously thinking about wading in these waters, why didn't they just go after a more legitimate LHSP in Capuano, for a few dollars more?
