  1. The Twins must think differently, a true value play. One thing is certain, there's going to be a huge hole in terms of quality position players at the lower levels of the minor league program for the next few years- so they must really be certain about the top position prospects in Ft Myers right now, plus Gordon, Sano, Buxton and Vargas and Santana to really come through.
  2. I'm wondering why the Twins passed on Dustin DeMuth? Left-hand hitting infielder from Indiana.
  3. Is there one person that has expressed one shred of dismay at Arcia returning with a resounding bang, apparently fully healthy, projecting his energy and enthusiasm for the game.... and simply just getting out there and doing his thing? I think whatever caution being expressed by most is "cautionary" in the sense that it's not sustainable without Arcia continuing to mature as a hitter. There are 4 qualified players since 2010 with K% rates over 30%: Chris Carter Adam Dunn Mark Reynolds Jerrod Saltalamachia All but Salty have BB% rates of 12-14% (Salty is just under 9%). Arcia in 400+ PAs is at just under a 31% K-rate and a 5.5% BB-rate- so he's not even yet matching these 4 obviously very-flawed players. These numbers will have to improve and I'm confident he will do so- Arcia is a guy that clearly has "it", like Kirby did back in the day- I can see him being a Top-Five MVP voted guy in a year or two or three- even his defense looks improved since March/April. Nothing wrong in pointing out areas for improvement, even when he's taking the Twins by storm.
  4. The reason Pressly was used in low leverage situation is because he was a Rule 5 selection that they used conservatively, and considering he'd jumped from AA, his numbers were pretty good for a rookie. He's throwing quite well in Rochester, his K%, now over 20% is a career high at any level, and he is putting up good numbers overall, even with an aberrational BABIP spike.
  5. Year over year, Tonkin lost 2 MPH on his FB and 3 MPH on his slider. Those kind of drops will kill an inexperienced RP without another out pitch. It looks like he's piecing things back together nicely in Rochester. Let's not sell him short prematurely.
  6. I would strongly recommend that the Twins look to move Burton, Guerrier and Swarzak out as soon as possible. I'd probably do it by Sunday if I could get any kind of value at all, with Pino, May and Pressly replacing them. Correia to long relief with May starting in his place. I'm not worried a bit yet about Tonkin, I think he'll be fine, pitchers go through adjustment periods and funks, he showed enough last year and early this year that he can still be very effective in time.
  7. I'm not big on relief pitchers this high in the draft, but this one could be the exception to the rule. He's never pitched more than 35 innings at Louisville, so we don't have a power guy with a burned-out college arm. There's no reason with his electric stuff that he can't be up very fast to the big club- some time next year is not out of the realm of possibility. It sounds like a little fine tuning of his form to protect his arm health and strength for the long-term, and he's good to go. This certainly opens up the possibility of being able to move Fien or Perkins at their peak value, as well.
  8. There's a good chance we'll get to see Burdi in action starting tomorrow night on ESPNU: LOUISVILLE SUPER REGIONAL Jim Patterson Stadium Friday, June 6 Game 1: No. 3 Kennesaw State (40-22) vs. No. 1 Louisville (48-15) (ESPNU, 6:30 p.m.) Saturday, June 7 Game 2: ESPNU, 7 p.m.Sunday, June 8 Game 3: ESPN2, 6 p.m. (if necessary)
  9. Dee Gordon at the 1/3 point of the season is playing at 4 fWAR level as we speak. As I said before the draft, I think the Twins missed on Jackson- I'm a BPA guy first & always, those of us that agree on that could be right or wrong, time will tell (and perhaps you and I are in agreement on that?). Once the top 3 pitchers were gone, what else could the Twins have done? Maybe reached for Touki or Newcomb? There must be reasons they fell to the middle of the first round. Having said that, it really isn't realistic to expect that every position player the Twins draft in the first round is going to be the next Byron Buxton at his position. If we get a guy that projects to be much better than Dee Gordon in the infield, potentially playing at an All Star level in 3-4 years or so, I'd consider ourselves quite fortunate.
  10. They could have purposely failed to sign him and gotten the same pick back next year.
  11. And Dee is on his way to a 4.0 +WAR season. He's going to be an All Star. His .700 OPS is 30 points better than league average @2B- only no other 2nd Baseman is going to steal 100 bases this year. If we can get an All Star SS out of Nick... when was the last time that happened again?
  12. Yep, that was my take. But if Harold Reynolds can say with a straight face that not only was he raised right and is a high character kid, but that he projects even higher than his brother, Dee, I'd say this a very, very solid pick. Let's hope they get this deal done ASAP and get him on the field on opening day in the GCL.
  13. Unless they comp Jackson to Doumit, I hope the Twins take serious consideration on him before they decide on Gordon.
  14. Jon Heyman called this one for the Cubs even before his tweet in his mock. Now, who's it going to be.....?
  15. It was wise not to trade any major prospects, but the unfortunate part of this scenario....the one year guys they signed (plus Pelf), other than Suzuki, have actually hampered both your primary and secondary goals- and it was obvious at the time of the signings that the Twins were really reaching in their "putting the band back together" strategy. And it's arguable that the goals might have been reversed by the Twins FO, given Pohlad actually going public with his "I'm embarrassed" comment last September, that Jim's primary goal was actually that "it wouldn't be a given to lose 90+ games" while not harming the future, by instead, kicking it down the road maybe 2 more years. It's a shame, because given what we know now, if Sano had been healthy and been able to provide an impact presence by the All Star break, along with not signing Pelfrey (meaning Deduno gets those 5 horrible Pelf starts instead), signing Abreu and acquiring a decent, leadoff-capable, bridge CF or SS, this team would be sitting in a fairly enviable spot right about now., and the future would be even more enhanced.
  16. Baby steps for Gardy?..... or is TR back on duty in limited-task-mode- with some friendly phonecall lineup advice?
  17. I'm not surprised that Nunez was inserted into the lineup tonight, but I am surprised that he isn't playing 2nd Base. I thought for sure it was the right time for Dozier to finally take his first night off from the field and DH. Still, it's another solid-looking lineup, but I fear Wile E is going to be too much, he throws a gopher ball or two, but the wind is blowing in on the Twins lefties tonight. Like many, our attention will be directed elsewhere. Hopefully this is the last time for a long, long time that the Twins draft so high, I'm hoping the worst they end up with is Gordon.
  18. What? I don't see one bit of irony in "This team is going to win 85 games" and "This was clearly a rebuilding year with the eye on 2015".... but to be fair, Dave does kind-of reflect accurately on the Twins seemingly working at cross-purposes with their offseason roster construction. Help me out, what exactly was the Twins' team mission statement of goals and objectives going into 2014?
  19. Yeah, I thought it was kind-of like an undeclared unilateral truce from the OF Outrage that Reusse's been haranguing about over the last couple weeks. But I also think that in the process, Reusse looks like he can move forward, silently claiming victory now that he's found out that Santana was going to play every day and not sit for weeks with his eyelid laceration. It's kind of funny, as Reusse was complaining and casting doubts about Gomez, for doing some of the same stuff that now is OK for Santana to do, when Gomez first took CF for the Twins. But you're right, Santana should be playing SS every day, somewhere, he needs every rep he can get, and his BA and OBP look to be ready to go ripe here at any moment.
  20. Of course, this is all based on the assumption that the Twins stay relevant in the chase, but... 1) Harper can play CF for the Nats, and Cabrera and Bautista could share the role part-time for the Jays. 2) Expiring contracts can be exchanged between teams where mutual interests are deemed of value to either the Jays or Nats (Willingham, Nunez, Correia, etc.) 3) Willingham would be a great RH DH bat for the Rays, considering that Adam Lind has a career OPS+ of 52 against lefties and Josh could play some LF. 4) Nunez may be considered acceptable to replace Goins at 2nd for the Jays. 5) The Nats want to upgrade their bench (Nunez, Escobar might be of interest, but it would obviously cost something else to get 1.5 years of Span, thus the Bridge to Buxton issue would be solved). 3) There's a chance that another replacement-type CF might also be waived, Sizemore would be of most interest for the Twins to grab.
  21. Yeah, and obviously, no one in the Twins braintrust has ever read the Thomas Wolfe novel, "You Can't Go Home Again." I think Denard, if traded back to the Twins, would first kiss the MSP tarmac upon arrival, and then the "400ft." sign in CF at TF, should he get the chance to come home.
  22. Yep. My bad, I googled "Mlb.com Twins Top 20" and they sent me right to the....2013 list....
  23. Yeah, we had this discussion when it first heated up about the Twins interest in Jay. I would be stunned if the Twins tried to go head to head in negotiation with the Cards out of sheer CF desperation. Here's the list of expiring or option-related contracts for CF: Emilio Bonifacio (30) Colby Rasmus (28) Grady Sizemore (32) Denard Span (31) – $9MM club option with a $500K buyout Chris Young (31) See a deal in there? The 2 names that stand out are Rasmus and Span. I can envision scenarios that might work for both teams, without mortgaging the Twins future.
  24. I'm with you and will be easily swayed when it becomes obvious, for now, I'll lean towards the potential A&M American quarterback until he proves he's being eclipsed by the Aussie-upstart......definitely nice (and convenient!) to see them competing in the same setting. And it will be extra nice when the national services get the memo and begin to confirm what we are seeing and move Thorpe onto some Top 100 lists. Callis and Mayo at MLB.com still apparently don't even have Thorpe in the Twins Top 20 lists.
