  1. Yeah, maybe a bit of an efficiency freak. But this guy is rapidly becoming my runaway favorite (which also means he probably won't get the gig), for many supportable reasons, but these three revelations from Berardino's piece put it over the top, especially his personal crusade to speed the game up!!!: Just the chance to return to most typical 9-inning games being completed in a brisk 2.5-3 hours instead of the usual Twins-snoozefest, 3.5-4 hours, would improve the quality of the product immensely.
  2. What about the 1st base coach?
  3. Reposted from the other PC thread, Allen has a demonstrated history of making good pitchers much better, as in the cases of Chien-Ming Wang and Odorizzi (see below), but also with dramatically improving the results of more pedestrian arms (see below):
  4. Reposted from the other PC thread: I've been begging for the club to follow up with the Glynn hire and get some more successful Rays personnel, this one has a strong record of success as the AAA Durham Bulls pitching coach. Look especially at the K%'ges, 3 straight years at #1, even as his best players graduate... Holy Cow! Not bad for a guy that emphasizes mastering: the FB inside and outside, don't be afraid to throw strikes, and pitching to contact: Never been in the Twins organization, but can "talk the talk" -AND- "walk the walk." I see a great fit here if Terry has the courage to pull the trigger.
  5. T-Bar's FB velocity dropped close to 89MPH, thus, he relied more heavily on his so-so slider, which became a net Pitch F/X minus pitch for him in 2014. And most importantly, he lost his split advantage against LH batters- LHB OPS .760 --> RHB .713. These developments helped lead to these significant drop-offs from 2013, with about the same number of IP: 2013 ERA 1.70 SIERA 3.64 K% 22.8% H/9 4.70 BA .153 OPS .530 LD% 19.0% 2014 ERA 3.40 SIERA 4.06 K% 16.0% H/9 9.54 BA .270 OPS .734 LD% 26.4% Neither in 2013 or 2014 did the Twins see fit to put Thielbar into many high-leverage situations, only a little over 10% of all innings pitched. There have to be other options to consider
  6. Wait, what? I must have missed when that "CF logjam" gummed up the works around here- didn't we just set a modern record for most games played by non-CF in CF in a single season?
  7. Nice to see Polanco hit the ground running. He was 2-4 last night, which brings his slash line after 4 games to .611/.667/.611/(1.278) on 11-18, with 3 walks, 2 SB, 2 Ks, hitting safely in all 4 games. Interesting to note, he has played 2nd base in all 4 games. And a question for Seth.... Is Thorpe going to throw any innings in the ABL?
  8. I responded to you before on Thielbar, I'll say it again- he did not get the job done in 2014. His numbers collapsed to half of what they were in 2013. He also lost his split advantage against LH batters. And "high level" success? OK, he's in the majors, but he has virtually never been called upon to pitch in high leverage situations. I'd much rather expose an Indy League-refugee in T-Bar (who may or may not be claimed) versus taking the very likely path of losing a former 1st round draft pick in Gilmartin.
  9. There's no doubt that he's been working with some good prospects over the last 4 years, such as- Chris Archer, Alex Cobb, Alex Torres, Jake McGee , among others. Jake Odorizzi really stands out with major improvements in repeating AAA, between the Royals farm club and the Rays: 2012 (Royals AAA) K/9 7.38 BB/9 3.35 K% 19.1 BA .251 WHIP 1.35 2013 (Rays AAA) K/9 8.98 BB/9 2.90 K% 25.2 BA .224 WHIP 1.13 But it isn't just the ace-level talent that has improved under his tutelage. AAA journeyman/fringe-major-leaguer, JD Martin, moved over to the Rays in 2013 and posted a stellar 16-4 record with career highs in ERA and K/9. Merrill Kelly bounced around the Rays system for 4 years with uninspiring results. Getting promoted to AAA in 2013, and repeating the level in 2014, he's put up high-end results in ERA and K/9, far above anything he'd shown previously.
  10. I've been begging for the club to follow up with the Glynn hire and get some more successful Rays personnel, this one has a strong record of success as the AAA Durham Bulls pitching coach.
  11. More good stuff about Allen, it gets even better:
  12. Neil Allen, finally the Twins taking a very serious look outside the obvious prospects. This little quote from an SI article is very intriguing:
  13. Yep, and that option year would give the Twins a little payroll flexibility. Anyone at all familiar with him should agree that he's very close to a #2 level starter when fully healthy. .
  14. Ted Simmons as Twins bench coach? That would be outstandingly refreshing.(Or Yount or Sveum).
  15. This tweet helps soften the blow, as well:
  16. Don't you think that Mason would be 'somewhat' refreshing and less disheartening?
  17. Well, we need more, and better, leakers.
  18. Sooo.... does that mean Mason is the one left standing?
  19. You mentioned one of your main concerns was WHIP. The FIP/xFIP and LOB% numbers with MOB, indicate that he is a far better pitcher than Garza and Hughes in the same situations, which mitigates some of the concern for Masterson's WHIP issues. It would seem that his high GB% has likely induced a ton more DPs than Garza and Hughes, that's a good thing.
  20. I haven't heard anyone state that they hope Masterson will improve dramatically, just that he offer a very reasonable chance at pitching at his career averages, which by all accounts thus far, are pretty good. And to the contrary of your opinion, IMO, the signing of one or two SPs at one-, or two-year deals in the case of the Twins- with 3 hot-prospect SPs on the cusp of contributing- seems like a pretty smart strategy to raise the chances for a playoff run in both 2015 and 2016.
  21. I don't assume that Masterson will get healthy. Parker and everyone else acknowledges that the Twins are doing their proper due diligence on him, and should only move forward with assurances that he has no major structural damage to his arm or knee. In the last 5 years, Masterson has only had 2 FIP/xFIP results above 4.00, with one of those, 2014, clearly being injury-related- so only 1 year in the previous 4 years could be rated in the "inconsistent" column. And further regarding his consistency, his durability is far better than those other two Twins targets I illustrated. Yes, Garza's WHIP over the last 5 years is 1.23 and Hughes' is 1.28, vs. Masterson's 1.41, but consider this: Men on Base FIP/xFIP Garza 3.87/4.07 Hughes 4.05/4.05 Masterson 3.83/.3.82 And this- LOB% with Men on Base Garza 18.2% Hughes 22.5% Masterson 33.1%
  22. A short-term deal is exactly what the Twins should want. The pipeline is backed up out to 2019 with good SP prospects.
  23. 1) A chance to compete w/ a healthy Masterson changes the expectations for contention. 2) A chance to bridge the question marks between the established SPs and prospect SPs. 3) A declined QO turns into an extra 1st round pick. 4) A chance to trade for top prospects in mid-season for the most-coveted commodity.
  24. Yep, thanks for the extra depth of info, ofttimes RPs get buried from our consciousness early-on from one or two bad outings. I noted his "bad luck" stats in my long run-down previously (the Minorleaguecentral numbers are slightly different from Fangraphs) BABIP .360 2nd highest LOB 64.1% 12th lowest And he had a number of stat results that matched or beat Gilmartin and Rogers. I highly doubt that he would be susceptible to being taken in the Rule 5 draft, and I'm sure they will protect him in the AAA Rule 5 draft, if at all possible, but still, many will remember his previous highly regarded status, plus, it seems like the stats like- lowest hard-hit balls, and the extraordinary swinging strike-out rate, would attract at least some outside attention. I don't know if he'll get a ST invite- I hope Sickels is really on to something for keeping the faith when all others have seemingly moved on, but another good year in AAA, with some better luck, and the Twins thought process on Salcedo and his prospect status might change quite a bit.
  25. I don't get this conclusion, getting Masterson (and getting one other high-upside SP FA to click) would mean the we ARE making a run next year. Including Masterson's bad year in 2014- 2010-2014 Stats: Garza- IP/Yr- 165 K/9- 7.45 FIP/xFIP- 3.76/3.76 Hughes- IP/Yr- 159 K/9- 7.50 FIP/xFIP- 3.92/4.05 Masterson- IP/Yr- 184 K/9- 7.50 FIP/xFIP- 3.79/3.79 Assuming Masterson gets healthy, and comes at a discount on a "show I'm healthy" short-term contract, what's not to like with this track record?
