  1. You know it's looking bad for you when Hawk Harrelson looks like the grown up in the room.
  2. Agree with everything, but his glove his shaky, certainly not above Robinson.
  3. I mostly agree with this, I think the Twins are pursuing salvage mode with Hicks. It would be nice if they could make lemonade out of a lemon. JD Martinez was only a 20th round pick, was up and down with the Astros, and then at age 26, was unwanted by the worst team in baseball and also by practically every other team that passed on him, as well, all except the Tigers (including the Twins), before he finally got his career on track. That's not to say I predict that Hicks will ever turn it around in similar fashion, just that he's still only 25 and has more skills in his tool box than Martinez.
  4. I'm going to wildly go out on a limb and forecast that by the end of June, the top three names will have lower BAs, while the latter two's BAs will be much higher.
  5. Ahh, but since most of us presumably agree that Hicks is the only one of the three who has a chance to be part of the future, the only remaining question is this: What is the best prescription that gives him that chance? "Make or break season?" The guy has already shown that being forced up to the major leagues over two seasons when he clearly wasn't ready has resulted in a crisis of confidence. Given that Hicks has never even mastered AAA, there's a strong case to be made that the Twins are correct (finally!) and perhaps can still salvage Hicks' major league career in having him take a step back- perhaps some success at that level will lead to an increase in confidence, which in turn leads to better enough play, both in the field and at the plate, that he'll be better prepared for his next call-up. *** *** This doesn't mean I would exonerate the Twins if this proves to be the proper course of action in the handling of Hicks, their personnel decisions in the OF over the last 3 seasons, particularly CF, would have meant certain FO pink slips in many other organizations.
  6. His new split-finger wonder-weapon factored a whole lot more... (Bruce Sutter redux?)
  7. Pino had as many Ks in 3 innings (4), as the Twins staff has had in 8 innings pitched.
  8. Pino would have been a nice guy to keep around in the Swarzak role, who got his roster spot?
  9. Tell me about it: Pelfrey in-game ERA: 0.00 FIP 3.65 xFIP 4.62 Guthrie in-game ERA 5.40 FIP 6.70 xFIP 6.90
  10. I'd just settle for a good baserunning team tonight, in which case, I'd have already been close to already cashing my ticket on the over/under.
  11. I agree, this was definitely the right night for Suzuki to sit.
  12. Half-serious response- Zuke's vesting option for '17 only comes into play for what he does in '16. This seems like the kind of night to give him off, but if there was any doubt about him playing I'm sure he made his case to Molly just by whipping out his career stats against Guthrie.
  13. Look for big nights from Mauer, Suzuki and Hunter vs. Guthrie. Mauer has hit 1.207 OPS against Guthrie, with 3 HR, Zuke is also over 1.000, while Hunter has hit .327 in around 50 career PAs. Take the "over" at 8.5.
  14. A team flush with cash because of new stadium and media revenues- and supposedly with a successful reputation for identifying talent- should be signing quality FAs in a rebuild, this can serve to greatly shortening the rebuild cycle and make you less dependent on the unpredictable nature of prospect maturation rates. It's now especially true with the new opportunities to gain Competitive Balance Round draft picks and international bonus money via trade. Plus, risk is mitigated through the maxim- there's no such thing as a bad short-term deal.
  15. OPS is now .865. Encouragingly, the two doubles and the BB were against RHP (but less encouraging when looking at the bigger picture, going into today, his OPS vs. RHP was still only a paltry .567 in 27 PAs.... while his splits in Rochester and New Britain in 2014 were nearly identical). All that said, it seems clear if Hicks could maintain something close to this production level, he will be called up sooner rather than later, likely in favor of Schafer. But I've yet to be presented with evidence that Hicks has made the case that he would be a significant defensive upgrade.
  16. The general drumbeat of criticism directed towards the FO by most on TD has been because THEY haven't "signed onto the rebuilding process." And I believe it was your "predecessor" who said that the "Parade" would start in 2015.
  17. Acquiring Scott Van Slyke (in LF) and/or Peter Bourjos (first CF, then 4th OF) wouldn't block anyone. (Arcia can either DH or go to RF, with Hunter going to DH in the first scenario, one and/or both of the current CFers would be DFA'd in the second scenario) Picking up a legit CF defender via waiver claim wouldn't block anyone. And HIcks is not a good CF defender, period (with the poor routes and reads he takes, I'm not certain if he is a defensive upgrade over the current CFers).
  18. Actually, Meyer only tied his career-high single-game strikeout number of 11 batters. This was the 4th time he's reached 11 K in his career. A year ago at this time, he had back-to-back 11 K games, on 4-23 and 4-28.... and once in 2012 in A ball. Hopefully, this was a big personal victory for Meyer, in terms of overcoming his early wildness and then "flipping the switch". Over his last four innings, his strike rate was a much-improved 60.5%.
  19. So, my conclusion after reading this piece? As of April 22, the Twins have a handful of nuthin' in terms of quick-fix options. How about a trade? The teams with excess OFers in the offseason still have them. The Dodgers 5th OFer, Scott Van Slyke, would be an immediate huge upgrade in LF, plus he can play the other two OF positions acceptably. 5 years of team control, but he also could be a relatively valuable trade chip once Buxton and Rosario are ready. How about a waiver claim? Gary Brown, former 2010 1st round draft pick and 2012 top-rated prospect for the Giants, who was just DFAd by the Cardinals. Hasn't proven he can hit MLB pitching at all, but he's only 26, super-fast, and a true plus-defensive CF.
  20. To what? Their signing and re-signing dates?
  21. "A bit premature." Why? Meyer's replacing someone on the way to being groomed to be a front-end starter, and when, was the whole reason that Terry Ryan traded his starting CF for him way back in 2012. He's gone through every minor league level and is now repeating AAA, of course we should all be speculating the who and when questions.
  22. And it wouldn't be the first time, the Twins seem to enjoy just this scenario.... Capps (ext.), Burton, Pelfrey, and of course, Ryan Doumit.
  23. Check the video again, pretty damning.
  24. Thankyou for the link. Based on the discussion here and elsewhere, I thought perhaps I'd mis-remembered what I clearly saw last night. Particularly because of the team-wide defensive struggles, this continued nonchalance and blatant disregard of fundamentals is unacceptable and needs to be nipped in the bud. Can the manager still impose fines on bonehead mis-plays such as these... or is that no longer allowed in the CBA?
  25. Well, he is 6'9" after all...
