  1. Lots of risk, high reward. I would go for it.
  2. This is why I sign Kelly Jansen. With the rest of the bullpen types coming, starting pitching is not as important in the short term. Twins by midseason should be able to have a close to 4 inning shutdown bullpen. Ask the Royals, that covers a lot of sins.
  3. Would rather have seen Thorpe kept, as I regard him as the most likely lost, you can always stash a pitcher on a bad ballclub. I do not remember seeing Turner being listed in Seth's top 50, so I am guessing the Twins brass did not see enough progress either. Santana may be one of the utility options if Dozier is traded, so he needed to be kept. Rest where little surprise and were what I felt was the best line.
  4. Would package Gibson with Dozier to the Pirates for Tallion and other prospects. If that fails circle back to Dodgers.
  5. Would package Gibson with Dozier to the Pirates for Tallion and other prospects. If that fails circle back to Dodgers.
  6. I believe Plouffe will be gone soon. If you keep him what do you do with Vargas/Park? Most major league clubs know this, so he has no value.
  7. Time to trade is now. 1 year will not net you nearly as much. Evan clubs like Pittsburg can handle his salary for the next 2 years. Cheap is one of the biggest assets to his contract.
  8. Both of these are more like org filler for me and should be overtaken by the AA staff earlu next year.
  9. To be doing this project Allan must have been told he was likely to be retained and what he would change given another year in the organization. Only hope it may be that simple.
  10. did not say it was not being taught, just not as high a priority as pitch development. Rays do not seem to let pitchers advance too far without that command. It also seems to be why Rays pitchers called up to the majors seem to be more likely to succeed at this level.
  11. Because he becomes a block to finding out what you have in either Garver or Murphy. Both need to play next year with the Twins. If neither work out then you look for a catcher. I much rather put dollar assets into pitching that is both younger and with several years of control. The Twins hitting could be ready to compete by 2018, but pitching looks like a much longer track. My moves would be to bring both at the same time. Twins payroll at the end of 2018 will be very low, so putting major assets into the staff should be a priority, not into a 2 or 3 year aging catcher.
  12. what I am saying is that half measures are what the Twins have been doing the last several years. Also the Wild, just good enough to compete not good enough to win it all. I am endorsing a path that has a chance of winning it all. Twins have enough talent that while painful could punt the second round draft pick. Do not see Twins developing enough pitching internally to get to the next level(hope they not be realistic about the chances). You have to trade or buy pitching to compete and how many of the Twins current pitchers could you see on a pennant winning team. My estimate at the current time is 2 maybe 3. That leaves 9 -10 spots to fill and hope maybe half will be filled internally. That leaves about 5 to sign or trade for. That is a big task, so we need to get going.
  13. A fair number of these are good depth pieces, would like to see them resign Wimmers, Edward Mujica, and some of the others.
  14. That is why I believe that you have a 4 - 5 year window before this team becomes expensive. Or you spend money on rebound players hoping to move them at the deadline. Falvey and Levine have good track records on finding young pitchers at the A or A+ level. You try and get one of them thrown in for every deal you make. I believe in spending in the international market, but make your dollars count. Not every deal will work out, but the Dodgers and the Cubs both greatly improved their farm system by spending the money here. Problem with Holland(who I like) is that he will want to reenter the market after two years, so would sign only if the money was right. Just do not want to throw money at marginal FA's that may or may not work out, unless the money is so small it does not matter(somewhere in the less than $3 million range)
  15. No, but do not spend resources on players that will not be here in 3 years. That is why I am in favor of signing an ace reliever and an ace starter next offseason. Do not waste money on players just to get a little better next year.
  16. Which of you is going to spend $9 million a year on Castro for a 2 - 3 year contract. Mlbtraderumors pegs him at 2/$15 and I feel that may be low considering the number of teams that need a good catcher who hits a little. Do not feel like this is the correct line and his agents could only use the Twins to drive up the price as an in demand FA is not likely to play here with little chance to make the playoffs.
  17. I am OK with what the Twins have at catcher, feeling Garver will be up at midseason if not sooner. Castro looks like an overpay, but would be the best of what is out there for an OK price. Rest of FA catchers are over the hill and suspect in one form or another. I would rather find out what Garver has than to overpay when other areas are in greater need.
  18. You can only work with what you have. Twins did not have much in the pitching department. Will be interesting to see if the change in philosophy will have some pitchers here do more time in the minor leagues learning the new way(fastball control). This may slow the Twins young pitching talent by about a year for most of them.
  19. Allen was also well respected as a pitching coach in Durham. He is probably known to both Falvey and Levine. He also wrote some internal paper about the Rays way of fastball control being taught at the lower levels, which the Twins are not doing. This may be a total change in philosophy for the Twins
  20. Then maybe the Pirates or the Mets would be a better option. Do not want less than a sure #2 in a package which includes Dozier. Pirates fit because Dozier is a 2 year cheap option and maybe send one of the #3 starter prospects back and add some lower level prospects coming this way. Falvey may have a list from some of these clubs he wants, we will see if he is a good as he was with Cleveland in identifing lower level talent.
  21. Then I move on to other clubs who want second baseman. If you want to play, you have to pay. And some club in a win now mode will give the Twins close to want they want, even if you have to package another lower (not Romero) starter in with Dozier and take some lower (A) type prospects in return.
  22. Twins have one in Vielma, just doesn't hit. No need to trade for a one year rental. Deal with Dodgers perhaps, but want Uries, not DeLeon(he projects to a #2 or #3 not an ace). Good shot though, with a couple of ruff spots. Also think Gibson should be gone, he is the classic #5 starter and that spot should be used for starter tryouts this year. Would also use spot to take a flyer for a rebound case.
  23. Due to his back issues, I doubt in the long term Trevor May is a bullpen piece. I might non-tender Gibson, who to me is looking more like rotation filler than anything else or hopefully include him in a trade. Feel Twins should be looking at young top of rotation pitchers in a Dozier deal, also given there starting pitching issues, do not feel Mets will deal until late spring if at all, would target Pirates or Dodgers as a place for Dozier. Bullpen needs a major upgrade, do not see a path here.
  24. Relievers tend to be more durable. Mlbtraderumors projected Jansen at 5/$85 and Chapman at 5/$90. Next group of frontline starters are likely to go at 7-8/$200-240. Twins will not pay in that league. You probably have 50-55 games you win and 50-55 games you lose, the rest are in play. Managers have not yet learned how to play in the 5-6 inning starter era with a shutdown bullpen at the backend. I ran this concept at 11 years ago in a stratomatic baseball league here in town, and with a good offense and very mediocre starting pitching made it to the finals. I was unlucky not to win, but opposing manager got hot against my pen. Twins like the Royals have the finances for this type of concept, especially since rest of bullpen will be cheap over the next 5 years as will most of the starters. It is a risk, but frontline starting pitching is worse as they are only 1 pitch from a 2 year stretch with TJ surgery. Twins have enough position player talent in the pipeline to have me believe the onfield team should be fine, only the pitching needs major help.
  25. Nice update, I also think some of your prices are low to very low. Greg Holland might go for as much as 3/25. Would rather pay Kelly Jansen 5/$90 and build the staff from the back out. Twins are unlikely to become too expensive in the next 5 years, so this should be doable. I would then fill in most of the rest of the bullpen, with upper level and just up pitchers. Would keep Santiago, but hope both Dozier and Santana are traded for a possible top of the rotation starter, but would prefer the Dodgers Urias rather than Tallion.
