    Great job! I'm looking forward to the September call-ups and imagine that it is a momentous event in most of their lives. At the very least, it gives us a change from the "same old, same old" and a chance to see some new enthusiasm.. At best, we may get a glimpse of someone (or more than one someone) who will be a very special player some day.

    There are two more significant questions: how much faith do you have that Morneau will stay healthy? How much faith do GMs have that Morneau will stay healthy? Everyone is acting like it is a foregone conclusion that his health issues are behind him. I can't help but think that they still play a significant role in any return for him and should still lead to a cautious approach by the Twins. You have to assign some degree of risk -- and I think that it is higher than for the average 31 year old player. It's like a ticking time bomb.

    The pitching has to be a factor -- Mackey also gave numbers showing that Butera's caught stealing rate was down (about 25% if I remember right) as is Doumits (about 10% I think). But neither of those approach Mauer's astronomical decline. I'm sure there are things he can work on. I'm also sure that in a losing season he probably doesn't want to overwork his knees. But I also have to think that his knees/legs are simply never going to be the same.

    Apparently today's post-game turned to the question of throwing out baserunners. I thought Mackey had a pretty good recap at: http://www.1500espn.com/sportswire/Notebook_Mauer_not_throwing_out_runners_but_problem_goes_beyond_him083012 I'm a little puzzled by why Gardenhire focused on Mauer's arm at the start: ""(Mauer) is not having any arm problems at all." although he did go on to say: " he's kind of sitting there catching it flat-footed. ... That leads to him having to stand straight up and throw the ball, rather than driving through it." When I first read the statistics, my first thought was about the problems that Mauer has had with his knees and legs not his arm. And while Butera and Doumit are also down from their career averages percentage-wise, neither of them is off nearly as much as Mauer. To me, the combination of the decline in throwing out batters coupled with his somewhat reduced Slugging Percentage and OPS would indicate that his knees/legs will probably never be quite the same. (Although his power numbers are up from last year). Arm injury just never occurred to me.

    I think there are really only 2 choices -- an extension or he walks away. At least publicly, I don't think he'll be fired. I know Gardenhire is stubborn but I really think that if Ryan made it clear that he was going to fire him, Gardenhire would walk away instead (in part because I think Gardenhire is truly loyal to the organization and just wouldn't want to put them through firing him). And I don't think "lame duck status" will work for either side. I think they'll make a decision - extension or resignation and that will be it. Unfortunately(in my estimation) I think it'll be an extension.

    Jon, could you start a separate section -- like a forum section but wouldn't necessarily have to have comments -- as a "reference section". Things that are fact not opinion.

    I second that request. Look forward to the addition of new locations as players are called up or signed to the team in the coming years.

    Fascinating. For John (from the side of the map): Color-coded by number of players born in each town. I love the info on the side -- even more than the map itself. Thanks for a unique view of the team in history.

    There is also the added factor that Joe Mauer is -- and will always be -- more valuable to the Minnesota Twins organization than he could ever be anywhere else. There is no question in my mind that Mauer sells more jerseys, tickets, etc. in Minnesota than he would elsewhere. I don't like the incorporation of marketing/pr decisions into the baseball side of the equation and I hope that the Twins will avoid it from here on out. But Mauer was a unique case. It is not very often than you have a player drafted, developed and signed by his hometown team -- plus go on to have Mauer's accomplishments. The Twins clearly took that into account in the size of Mauer's contract -- and it is clearly (at least to me) a more substantial pr/goodwill amount than he would generate elsewhere (actually, my feeling is that many markets would find him pretty blah in terms of pr value). I was glad they put him through waivers. Just like I want to see them put most players through waivers. Given the current state of this team, they need to see what they can parlay into parts that would better serve this team in the long run. But it is absolutely not a surprise that no one bit (or at least not very hard).

    GM doublespeak may abound but I will be absolutely shocked if Terry Ryan spends more than $15 million on FA starting pitching and I sincerely doubt that he'll spend that much. I think that Ultimate Ratio may be right about Baker in the $3 million range. Then another in the $8-$10 million range. More than that? Highly unlikely. I honestly don't think that he is being deceptive on this point. I think he has been pretty honest and pretty consistent about his stance on FA pitching. Keep your expectations pretty darn reasonable.

    This is not working for the Rays. ... Every market is different. There isn't a hard and fast rule you can apply to new stadiums and attendance. As far as stadiums being 'empty' there are only a handful of ballparks that don't sell at least 50% of their seats each season. Typically it is Oakland, Tampa Bay, Toronto, Cleveland, Baltimore. I don't know what to think about Tampa -- sometimes I wonder if they wouldn't have mediocre attendance even if they had a new field (after the 1st year or two). I just wonder if there isn't something else going on in that market -- too many other entertainment options; too much outdoor fun, etc. Which is really too bad because the Rays seem to have a great organization.

    I believe that the opening day payroll will be $92 - $94 million. It will probably go up during the course of the season but I will be pleasantly surprised if it is higher than $94 million on opening day (barring some expensive injury in ST that they have to quickly replace).

    It does give them another opportunity to say that they are listening to the fans, though. They can point to Twitter responses, etc. that ask how they could even think about doing this. If you can't do anything meaningful, do something useless and claim that you listened to the fans. (Sorry my cynicism level about this team is so d*mn high. I hope that they were honestly testing the market.)
