  1. Has he been catching more steadily recently? I haven't really kept track. But if he has, the back spasms would seem to be a red flag -- especially when Terry Ryan says he could see him catching 100 games/season again sometime in the future. http://www.twincities.com/twins/ci_21528681/minnesota-twins-joe-mauer-misses-second-straight-game
  2. LOL at the Magic Number. I was thinking it was 4 -- the wins needed to avoid 100 losses!
  3. May we have another choice?
  4. Teams have won in the past with less than perfect teams. The question is whether you rely on that? Plan for the worst, hope for the best.
  5. I'd forgotten about the kidney stone problem, Boom Boom. For nokomismod, I think the neck problem was Morneau.
  6. According to wiki (and this actually jives with my memory so I didn't look farther), Mauer was diagnosed with an inflammation of the sacroiliac joint in March 2009. As we all recall, he was out until early May and then went on to have his MVP season. Sacroiliac joints are in the lower back. (both sides of spine)
  7. I went back and dug through the links to find the actual poll question and responses: Q17 (Twins fans: Would you support or oppose firing Ron Gardenhire? Support ........................................................... 9% Oppose ........................................................... 57% Not sure .......................................................... 34% Given the question, I'm not surprised by the responses. A lot of people are going to have trouble with firing a long-time employee with an overall record of success -- even some of us here who want to see Gardenhire gone. We'd like to see a change in manager "finessed" with a resignation/retirement. I think the response would have been significantly different if they had asked: Would you like to see Ron Gardenhire retire and the Twins hire a new manager for 2013? People need to be very careful how they characterize the results of this poll.
  8. The Orioles made a change in 2010 that is ignored in this article. Before the Orioles changed managers, they were 32-73 (.302). Showalter immediately turned that around and the O's went 34-23 (.596) for the remainder of the season. True, they couldn't sustain it in 2011 but they did improve to 69-93 (.426) overall. It's true that they went from .426 last year to .560 this year and a good part of that is probably due to the pitching changes -- and LUCK -- that are discussed above. But I think they are also benefiting from the shake-up they made in 2010. They improved from 2010 to last year and again from 2011 to this year. Do you think pitching changes ALONE will allow the Twins to make that kind of improvement? I think some changes in leadership are also necessary.
  9. Well, this Iowan would say fire him (or get him to retire). But a large problem with polls is always in the exact wording of the question -- for example, I think you'd get a different answer to "Do you want Ron Gardenhire to retire?" than you would to "Do you want Ron Gardenhire to be fired?" But I'm too lazy to go look up exactly how the question was worded. And I don't particularly care what Minnesotans in general think on this question. SOMETHING needs to change in this organization. The leadership is stagnant, stagnant, stagnant.
  10. The problem is the extremism of your position. I have NO problem with replacing Morneau with a younger, cheaper player (presumably Parmelee). You don't want to extend Morneau, I have no problem with that -- I'm not in favor of it either. The problem is that he IS signed for 2013 and the Twins will have to pay him $14 million (unless he retires but I'm pretty sure that isn't going to happen). So the question is how do you maximize your return? It seems to me that if you can't find a trade for him this winter (even if it is a salary dump) then you have to hope and pray that he stays healthy and that you can trade him next summer. But the other problem is that I'm not at all sure that the Twins would actually spend the savings from moving Morneau's contract. So it seems to me that you have to think about whether you want them reducing payroll by getting rid of salary -- maybe it's better to have Morneau's pay in the salary total even though payroll isn't allocated the way you want. I think we all have to be concerned about whether the savings created by moving a contract some how become permanent payroll reductions.
  11. The funds should be there to get some arms regardless. Signing them is another matter. It's hard enough to get one decent free agent starter, you can't assume that dumping Morneau means you get more. Having the will to sign them is another. We'll see how much "Will" Terry Ryan has this off-season. For now, I'm not getting my hopes up. He has said that he doesn't think free agency is the way to acquire starting pitching -- if he spends more than $12-$15 million, I'll be surprised. Look for a Pavano-type (not Pavano but an innings eater) and someone like Baker (cheap plus incentives).
  12. That crosses the line. You can dislike him. You can dislike how much he is paid. You can hope that he is traded. You can have doubts that he will stay healthy. But to hope that a player -- whether for your team or another -- is injured is pretty sick.
  13. I don't know why anyone even talks about Mauer's trade value. Mauer has to have more value in Minnesota than he could possibly have in any other market. There is just no way to underestimate the value of a clean-cut player who signed with his hometown team AND may possibly have a HOF career. If he does end up in the HOF, the long-term value of that to the franchise should not be overlooked. He simply couldn't have the same impact in another city by changing in the midst of his career. To me, when you are talking about Mauer and the Minnesota Twins, you are talking about a long-term strategy from both sides to maximize his value not only during his playing days but after he has retired as well. Given that I see Mauer as significantly more valuable in Minnesota than anywhere else, I can't see ANY team willing to pay enough to give the Twins a return.
  14. Well, from his perspective, now would be a time to look for an extension -- he would be dealing from a position of strength given his 2012 performance. Question: Did HE and his agent push for the 3-year deal last off-season or was the impetus for the length of the deal on the Twins side? Just curious because he would seemingly have more value as a free agent this off-season than last. Since he signed for 3 years last off-season, an extension seems to be the only way that they can capitalize on his career year.
  15. I wish all of them well and hope they continue to improve. But its also pretty obvious that the Twins need some additional pitching prospects. I hope that Terry Ryan has his trading hat on this offseason.
  16. His value is still incredibly low. There is little point in trading him right now. No team is going to give up much of anything for a recovering first baseman who is owed $14m in 2013. And that's the real dilemma. I keep reading people saying "Keep Him" and "Extend HIm" but if other GMs were as confident as some of the posters that his health issues are behind him, his trade value wouldn't be so low (even taking into account the $14 million for 2013.) I don't think that they have much choice but to keep him. And say daily (or more frequent) prayers that he doesn't get hurt again. After the last 3 years, I'm happy to think that he is giving the team value again (yes I know there were periods in there where he gave good value but this has been a long haul -- starting in August 2009). I'm just continuing to hold my breath hoping that he stays healthy.
  17. This. They've seemingly been poised to trade Span for more than a year. Never got it done. And NOW we're starting to hear rumors that the team is disgruntled with him -- when he still has several years and an option year left on his contract? How does that make ANY sense at all?
  18. Geez Revere is quick -- and fast. Can someone explain what happened on his non-steal of third a few innings ago? (maybe the 4th or 5th?)
  19. Why do we go through this cycle of thinking everybody who has a hot bat for a period of time should shift position so we can get them in the line-up? If it is that easy to play third, why have the Twins been searching for a good 3B man since the prime of Corey Koskie? I agree that Plouffe hasn't had time to really show what he can do since his thumb injury. Unfortunately he was hurt just as pitchers were adjusting to him so we haven't yet really seen if he would then be able to make adjustments himself. And we don't know if the thumb is affecting his fielding. I don't know if Plouffe is the answer but I have some confidence that putting Parmelee in to play 3B in the majors when he appears to have only played outfield and 1B in the minors is NOT the right thing to do. **************************** OOPS! I probably would have written something different if I had refreshed my browser before posting. I stand by what I said but it seems a little "off" given the comments right before it.
  20. Was such a long half inning I've almost forgotten Mauer's single. But yeah, that was a shot.
  21. Wish you were asking that about a good power hitter.
  22. Well, blech. Hope they can win one for TK this weekend.
  23. Really hard to believe that they couldn't have found an inning or two for Slama in this game. But at least Waldrop was efficient there.
  24. Sigh. It's like watching a bad circus some times.
  25. Aggie looks like he could get right back on the mound.
