  1. Apparently Fox decided to spare me the agony today. Game of the Week was supposed to be the Twins & Rangers but they changed it to Cardinals and Reds.
  2. Always good to leverage your investment. Suspect that this isn't enough for the griping Lee County voters, though.
  3. Way to find the silver lining!
  4. Ask any child ... it is always the one who pushes back who gets punished. Never seems fair but in this case, it was all about location, location, location.
  5. Well this pretty much sucks. Diamond suspended. Twins behind in the 1st inning again. Ugh.
  6. Fun to see Revere and Mastroianni in Center and Right. Looking forward to the September call-ups so we don't have to see Doumit in LF.
  7. Really interesting article, Parker. Thanks. Do you know if the 3-year and 5-year stats to which they refer are available somewhere? It would be interesting to see how the Twins rank. It would also be interesting to see if there has been any movement in their position. I also thought that the statement about confidence in younger players was interesting. But it also seems like teams with younger players should have less games lost to injury just as a matter of course. One other thing, won't KC be really adversely affected this year given their rash of TJ surgeries? And how does that tie in to the new training methods?
  8. I want this franchise to make decisions based on what is best for their chances of success at playing BASEBALL not on PR reasons. In my opinion, considering PR factors has been part of this team's troubles. If extending or re-signing Morneau makes sense because he is the best player available for the money (and significantly better than a lower cost player), then fine, do it. But do it because it makes baseball sense. Fans will adjust -- as long as the TEAM wins. Fans would adjust if Mauer left town -- as long as the TEAM wins. Fans know that players come and go -- but they are generally fans of the TEAM. Let decisions be made on creating a baseball TEAM that can compete with the BEST in mlb and everything will be okay. Making decisions based on players' PR or marketing value is the eventual road to ruination.
  9. It seems to me that there is an objective factor and a subjective factor in making any of these determinations. There's objective evidence: what do the x-ray or the MRI or any other tests actually tell the medical staff? What do things like range of motion tests or other performace-type tests tell them? But there is always the subjective, too. How does it FEEL when I rotate your arm (or whatever)? What is your level of pain? It would seem to me that when there is a lot of objective information, the staff should be able to make a pretty good determination (e.g. a tear, a break, etc.) There may be different treatment methods but at least they should be able to get a handle on what is going on. But when it is subjective (bruising, general soreness, etc.), they don't have much choice but to rely on what the player is telling them. Player's can't diagnose themselves -- but obviously their feedback plays a large part in whatever diagnosis is made. And it seems to me that is where "art" means "science" when it comes to medicine. It would be really interesting if there were a way to compare the results of various medical staffs. I think most of us generally grumble about what has/is going on with injuries on the Twins. I just don't pay close enough attention to other teams to know how that compares.
  10. Doesn't look like it by our eighth inning "fielding". Or pitching
  11. The Twins have been playing pretty apathetically on this road trip. Maybe Oswalt gave them a figurative kick in the butt via Mauer's shoulder.
  12. Well, Oswalt is gone now anyway.
  13. That's the problem though. Maybe Oswalt was aiming at Mauer. Maybe he was just trying to pitch inside. Or maybe he just missed completely. It's pretty much impossible to tell ... and that's probably why the ump didn't do anything then. With Diamond's throw, there was no question it was retaliation and it it was thrown high.
  14. I also don't think that Oswalt hit Mauer intentionally. Oswalt did not have particularly good command earlier. The ump had no choice but to eject Diamond. He threw too close to Hamilton's head. He could have plunked him on the butt or the back instead of throwing it in the area of the head.
  15. He isn't a 25 year old prospect. He is a 31 year old player. I'm holding my breath that he stays healthy for the rest of THIS contract. Talking about giving him a long extension makes my stomach roll. (And I LIKE Justin as a player and think he's very valuable when healthy. I just have no faith in his long-term ability to stay on the field).
  16. So I see that Span plans to be in the line-up playing CF tonight. Where's the rest of the line-up (don't mean you, Brock -- can't find it on Twitter either).
  17. The mute button is your friend -- turn off the sound. You'll be surprised at how much more enjoyable it is to watch the games (even the way the Twins are playing) without listening to all the blathering and incessant interviews and gimmicks.
  18. Not going to quote you Brock because the quotes start getting a little long. I understand your point and know others who do the same as you. But don't you think it may take even longer than 10 years? Look at the massive long-term TV rights contracts that have been inked in some markets. This shapes up to be a massive battle.
  19. Honestly I don't remember if the Twins were on WHO. WNAX out of Yankton, SD used to reach a large part of Iowa (as well as a lot of SD, some in ND and in MN). According to radio map, they still carry Twins games but their signal strength must not be nearly what it used to be. All of the current Twins radio broadcast stations in Iowa are in the northern part of the state -- Sioux City, Spencer, Mason City, New Hampton and Cedar Falls. I really think the answer is in simply lifting the blackout rules for mlbtv for the state rather than trying to divide it up differently. Lifting the blackout rules for mlbtv subscriptions shouldn't significantly adversely affect any team OR any particular cable operators because the state is a gigantic mess on broadcasting rights anyway. Same thing with radio subscription rights.
  20. To follow up on what Chief said, just remember: Independent. In-depth. Irreverent. Individuals. Thanks for providing the site.
  21. Well, today they took care of the 1 game over. Let's hope they can keep it at least even from here on out.
  22. Thank you for the clarification. I feel much more comfortable with that.
  23. One last thing, it is my strong personal desire that the administrators will use the private messaging system to debate appropriateness with a particular poster rather than some of the back-and-forth that we've seen. I hope that posters will also honor resolving any issues in a more private manner.
  24. Overall, I don't have a problem with the rules although like several have mentioned above, the real question is in enforcement and I hope that we have opportunities to revisit the policy should we find the enforcement to be more restrictive than we anticipated. I'm a little puzzled by the difference between what Brock says about avatars: We're sticking to something close to a prime time television rule. If it can't be said on network television, reconsider saying it. And how what he said in that statement relates to rule #2 on swearing. It seems to me that there is a lot that is said on prime time television that can be construed as a violation of rule #2. One last thing about posters who are repeatedly negative. It is JUST as annoying to read posters who are unerringly positive -- especially when they don't state a factual basis for their position.
  25. I appreciate the effort to lay out the list, Nick. It doesn't do anything for my lack of optimism about this team but it does provide a nice summary of information. I want to add one response about Bill Smith, though. He was definitely not my favorite person -- and I made a number of posts on the Strib site last year calling for him to be fired -- but blaming all of this on Bill Smith (per one of the posts above) is ludicrous. Other than Smith, the SAME people are involved in the decision-making now. Same scouting director, same Assistant GM, same director of player personnel, same minor league coordinator -- and your current GM was a "Special Assistant" to Smith (primarily dealing with scouting matters as I understand it). The Twins front office has always worked cooperatively -- Smith may have been the final say but he relied on information from everyone else. I have no doubt that Terry Ryan excercises a greater degree of personal judgment and has significantly more "baseball savvy" to back up his decisions -- but the underpinnings of the Twins decision-making system all remain the same.
