    No, the point that you are missing is that the Twins feel that Pino deserves this due to hard work. Per Gardenhire: “(Pino) pitched fantastic in spring training,” Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. “Locates the ball, has deception. Not overpowering at all: 87-88 miles an hour, big curveball, really changes speeds well, gets hitters out. That’s what baseball is all about. He’s been getting them out.” ,,, "He’s done it there at Triple-A now as well as anybody in that league,” Gardenhire said. “Can he do it here? Only one way to find out. We’re going to put him up here and see.”' Nobody is saying he'll find great success at the ML level. But he has had enough success at AAA to warrant the OPPORTUNITY to show what he can do at the major league level. And frankly, to deny him that opportunity based upon predictors, would be unfair. Personally, I'm wishing him well. Maybe he'll defy the odds and do better than the predictors would indicate. Maybe the predictors will be dead on and he'll be an abysmal failure. Predictors and statistics, however you may want to categorize or define them, are interesting but I'd like to see actual results.

    But even if it comes from somewhere unexpected, it doesn't happen if you don't have good pitching. And frankly, while it may occasionally come from somewhere unexpected, it rarely comes as a complete surprise.

    Rooting for Hughes and Dozier although I suspect Perkins will be it. If its Mauer, I'll throw up. Absolutely not deserved THIS year.

    I really see it as a good thing that he will be working with some of the Twins' up-and-coming pitchers. They can develop that rapport that is, perhaps, more difficult to find when you are a rookie working with established starters. That doesn't mean that Pinto doesn't have things to work on. Just that working together can be a really good thing.

    Great article, JC. To some extent, I view this as typical St. Peter spin. He's on a panel with the Saints. What's he going to say? But there have been enough past rumblings to make it a legitimate concern. And 2 years into the agreement, I'd view this as a slap in the face if I were CR. Also, I can see the real advantage of having your AAA or even AA team right next door. I see less advantage in having the A club there. Especially when it is currently a reasonably easy drive away.

    Unless you are venturing out for the entire night, I think you're in good shape. Still southwest of me -- its in northeast NE -- should take a long time to move northeast. Looks pretty clear to the north and east of me for now. So have a good walk.

    I really don't know what to make of this interview. I thought about it earlier today when looking at Correia's starts and wondered if having Suzuki catch the last 2 starts had made a difference. But when I looked, Correia had some bad outings with Suzuki and some good ones with Pinto -- so I decided that really wasn't a part of the story. I certainly never saw Correia cast any blame on Pinto. Since Deduno was the only other starter that Pinto caught with any regularity, it was hard to draw any conclusions. But now I wonder how much impact the relievers may have had on Pinto's fate. And it is confusing because looking just at metrics, Suzuki doesn't rate well, either. I still think sending Pinto down was probably a good thing since he wasn't getting much time behind the plate at the ML level. Hope the work pays off for him.

    I agree, Mike. It just makes me incredibly sad to think of children (because I still think of 12 yo's as children) being addicted to a substance that is legally sold to adults. I did find it interesting that Byrnes said they had a lot of education in milb about chew but that, at least for him, the education really didn't impact. Perhaps treating it like marijuana etc. (warnings, suspensions, etc.) might have some effect.
