    I don’t see the Astros putting him on the block aggressively , they are in win now mode and it’s pretty rare for a team to only need 5 SP during a season. Basically you would need to overpay for him, I’d rather just sign a Lynn or someone like that.

    I mean yeah that’s why I called it an ‘ok’ signing. Which is fine as long as he isn’t the biggest signing. I will admit the Reed signing appears to be great. Rodney/Pineda TBD but at least we are trying to fix the pen. Rotation is a disaster though.

    Panic is the wrong word. Disappointing and hoodwinked are the words. The Pohlads told us that the new stadium would bring us into the 'big world' of contending, major free agency signings etc. But nope, the city gets put on the hook for a ton of money they will never see again> We were told that Falvine and co would change things, it's a whole new Twins front office and a brand new day! Over 365 days in and I don't see any real 'move' that makes them a whole lot different then the last regime. Reed and Castro are ok signings, other than that it's been a pretty big bag of 'meh'

    Give Cousins Diggs, Theilan and Cook and a D that will have him playing ahead or within 7 most times and he will be an MVP caliber QB next year. Book it.

    Darvish throws like 10 different pitches, thus his 'demise' into his mid 30's won't be as drastic likely as someone who relies on a heater.

    Yup, and it's hard not for me to just 'eye roll' anyone who complains about it. I'm also a Wild fan, and we can cry and complain all day about the Wild signing Parise and Suter, but at the end of the day, it got them some playoff game wins, some playoff series wins and put them as a contender (where as it would have been a very very very uphill road otherwise) Oh, and they are still a playoff contender and have a shot at the cup as of today! Give me a GM/owner who WANTS to win a title versus one who just only cares about the bottom line, until the Pohlads actually do something....anything! to convince me otherwise I will just assume they only care about the $$$$ Which means I don't care or respect them as sports owners.

    Yeah, I mean it's kinda why I am all for signing him to a 2 year extension after this year (or even prior) as long as it's not much more than 9 mil or so a year. As nice as it would be to have a 50 HR guy at first base, those types aren't super easy to find (plus you have a DH spot in the AL anyways!) I don't see anyone in the Twins system that Mauer is blocking. Anyways my point being, yes the Twins paid a lot for Mauer, could he have 'lived up' to the contract more? Of course, but injuries happen, but it's far from the biggest disaster ever. And I still maintain his contract never prevented the Twins from being good, what really hurt them were stupid extensions over the years: Blackburn, Hughes etc and bad bad bad trades (or at least in how they panned out) Garza, Johan etc

    He did pretty well last year as well, not all star or MVP like, but a 3.4 WAR from a 34 year old 1st baseman ain't bad IMO. I think when people look back at Mauer's career his rough 3 seasons 14/15/16 will be the true outliers. Even 14 and 16 weren't THAT bad as he still put up decent offensive numbers and more than 2 WAR each year. 15 was very disappointing but hardly disastrous.

    They were pretty fun to watch last year, which also fell in the Mauer contract, I get that you are trying to make a point, but just imagine if this team had ANY SP or bullpen help last year! Maybe we could have got a home game in the WC round and/or maybe have competed against the Yanks.

    I'm all for signing Tillman, but penciling him in as a #4 would be a mistake, he was the worst starter in the MLB last year, and his 2015 was pretty poor as well. I think he is a solid bounce back candidate, but I wouldn't just pencil him into the 4 spot or prob even the 5 spot (without a lot of good backup plans) imo.

    Not really though.....especially seeing how it was reported the Twins offered 5 years and the Cubs (obviously) offered 6 years. I tend to trust Heyman on these things FWIW.

    Yeah, I mean they could do ok, and I hope they do, we are just counting on a LOT of good things to break right. Santana coming back very strong after the surgery (no guarantee) Berrios taking a BIG step forward this year (no guarantee) May coming back from a big injury etc Also as high as I am on on some of the potential rookie SP, it's really hard to count on rookie SP to do much of anything their first year or so in the majors, sort of the nature of the beast to be honest, not a knock on them at all, but in general it's pretty rare for a rookie SP to put together top of the rotation type of numbers (which the Twins need) Hopefully Hughes can come back somewhat as well. I dunno though, it could all break right, but it could end up disastrous as well. I'm not super high on a guy like Cobb, but at least he could go a long ways to help stabilize the rotation and 'keep you in games' would have been nice to have a guy like Darvish who can truly dominate though.

    Well Santana is out for at least the first month/month and a half if not longer, so that is a concern. When Berrios and Gibson are our 'best two' SP going into the season at this stage it's big trouble, especially when you look around the league at the other 'contenders' Gibson is nothing more than a #5 on a contender or ideally at least, for us he could be the opening day starter, which says it all.

    LA, Houston, NYY and Texas have all made or won World Series in the last 10 years and have made plenty of other BIG splashes in the meantime in FA and trades. Also I know a lot of rangers fans who are pissed as well fwiw. The Brewers are a bad example (or good example actually) since they haven’t won jack either in forever. So yeah, I would say they have failed pretty significantly as well! (But at least they have made some aggressive moves over the years) If the Twins did anything over the last 25 years to truly (go for it) it would be easier to let it slide. Also the Yankees brought in Stanton and the Astros brought in Cole already this offseason...

    It was reported the Twins offered 5 years and a little over $100 million fwiw But still didn’t match the cubs or really come that close. Just a token effort to say “hey we tried! Ps enjoy the new 3 bars at target field and increased ticket prices to boot!”

    never said I have inside info, just said that if the Twins offered more it would have been leaked. No reason for it to have not been leaked. Anyways I see that you have a personal issue with me, so this will be my last response to you in this forum. Go Twins!

    Yeah teams can overcome one shaky contract easy enough. I don’t believe that the Mauer contract adversely affected things in any way. It’s not like the Twins were likely to go spend that money in other places anyways (esp as payroll has stayed more or less flat over the last several years no?)

    Name the last BIG FA signings the Twins have had in the last 25 years. Let me know how many playoff series, and playoff games they have won during that time as well, also let me know if they don’t currently hold the record for consecutive playoff losses. For goodness sakes man, it’s not like we are patriots fans crying about belicheck and brady, we are talking about a team that has the “new stadium” that they conned the city into paying for but have yet to win a playoff game since doing so. One playoff series win in 25+ years is poor, no matter how many ways you try to dress it up. The majority of MLB teams have had more success during that time.

    Yup. They blew it. Unless they pull an archer trade out of thin air this will be known as the off season where Falvey truly showed us that under the Pohlads nothing really changes that much.

    if the twins offered more there is about a 99.9% chance that it would have been leaked. Occam’s razor of course let’s us know that the Twins did not make the best offer and thus lost...again.

    Upset is the wrong word. Just feel bamboozled a bit that I would actually think this FO would be anything different then the last. At the end of the day the penny pinching pohlads call the shots on these sort of things, and I fear that we won’t win a title until they sell the team to an owner who actually cares more than the absolute bare minimum OR everything breaks right in a miracle type of post season run. I just don’t see how this team has SP to compete in the playoffs at this stage or in the near future without an ace or something

    Also the FA market, baseball and the world was significantly different back in 1991....but the point still remains, the one time the Twins got aggressive in FA it actually did pay off and they won it all. Since then what have they done? Ervin Santana on a solid but fair and not eye popping deal. Resigned Puckett. Gave Mauer a ton of money (right thing to do) Other than that there just frankly hasn’t been any real big moves.
