  1. You will all have to excuse Chief, in his day women used to pump out a couple kids and then go back to fighting the confederacy the next day
  2. Benching/Punishing him actually may have saved his ass. I don't know if they were playing the same team the next day, but if they were and he was in the lineup he would have seen a few pitches by his head. I imagine since he is getting his "punishment" by a benching, that team will be a lot less likely to throw at him next game for "revenge" since the benching is punishment enough. Also I guarantee they bench any other player that would have pulled that crap, you can't give special treatment to a guy, especially not this early in his career. That is how you end up with a Barry Bonds situation, and if you are going to be a dick like Bonds you sure as **** better hit like Bonds!
  3. Yeah, thats probably true. As mentioned I thankfully don't know much about all of that yet I think if the Twins were in town there would be a good chance Mauer would be suiting up "going to work" and then going back to be with his family afterwards etc.
  4. I recall similar criticism when Span took off a decent number of days when his Grandmother died. Pretty sickening to be honest.
  5. Mauer was also the top QB in the state in HS and had a lifetime scholarship offer from Bobby Bowden to come be his QB at Florida State. If you are a good enough "leader" to be a QB at a top program like FSU I sersiously think you are a a good enough "leader" for a baseball team. It also should be noted the Twins haven't had a whole lot of "club house" issues over the years, the biggest one was a temp fight between Hunter and Morneau and the next largest one was Slowey and his attitude about the bullpen.
  6. Why doesn't Joe want to be that guy? It's funny how these things get assumed, if Mauers double at Yankee stadium a few years ago was correctly called fair instead of foul, and the Twins win that game (and series?) do these questions still get asked of him? If Puckett doesn't hit the game 6 HR (the rest of the series he was pretty bad) so we assume he wasn't a "leader who wanted to be in that spot"? It's hard to blame Mauer when he just really hasn't had the chance to "be in that sorta spot"
  7. Trading Jim Thome was done as a favor to Thome, and frankly the Twins had no reason to be giving at bats to him at that point.
  8. Haha. I hate it when people are paid fair market value! Nothing makes me more upset!!! GRRRR!
  9. Exactly, its Tommy John Surgery, it's not some recurring Santana/Radke like shoulder issue. What is the % of pitchers who have had TJ at this point and moving forward? I bet in 10 years about 40% of all SP in baseball will have had it at some point.
  10. Before TJS Pelfrey was a guy who would give you close to 200 IP a year (Average 196 the four years prior) If you are going to shy away from every pitcher who has had TJS then your pickings frankly are gonna be real slim....
  11. I also think pitching outside of NYC has/is going to continue to help him. While coming up with the Mets expectations were sky high that he would be a stud in that rotation. After coming back in 4 games (SSS I know) he only failed to not have a QS in one of those (because he was one out short) his ERA has been 2.28 and his strikeout rate has been decent with 17 in 23 innings. Plus its not like those teams were the Astros etc, he went against Toronto, TB, Clev and LAA, all of those teams have pretty solid offenses. The Twins should take the opp now before the deadline to extend him. I think he wants to stay here since he has family in the area and could end up being a real nice player for us moving forward with such a young rotation. (He again would be our veteran Pavano like guy, just still in his prime instead of towards the end of his career)
  12. In 2010 and 2011 Pavano was well worth the money, he averaged 220 IP and had a 4.02 ERA 2012 was bad because of an injury, but those things happen. 23.5 million for 2 years of damn good performance and one "lost year" really isn't that bad. Even his awful 2012 in those 60 innings were more bad luck then anything, his FIP and XFIP were over 1.5 runs lower then his ERA. Not that it really matters, but Fangraphs said his "value" those 3 years was actually 27 million, even with the injury. If we signed Pelfrey to a 3 year deal and he gave us 2 years of 220 IP and 4.02 ERA and then got injured one year, I probably could live with that.
  13. Yeah, the fact his wife is still in the hospital is all you need to know, it would be a pretty dick move to just sort of bail at that point.
  14. Also if I were a worse man I would make some snarky remark of Mauer "scoring" in Dec and Jan instead of October when it truly counted
  15. File this under: Who gives a flying ****? The Twins are out of the race this year. The babies were his first and were born early. I don't know much about birth/children etc but I do know this prob isn't "ideal" I think Mauer has missed like all of 2 or 3 games this year? He has been in 92 of the 100 games so far (including these last 3 or so that he has missed). Him having about a week off to rest his legs etc probably isn't the worst thing in the world either. Additionally it gives us a chance to see Hermann on a daily basis, maybe this makes the Twins realize they finally have some C depth and can dump Butera?
  16. A guy who can give you a 4.00-4.50 ERA and 200 IP has plenty of value. Maybe 8-9 mil a year is too much. But I would be happy keeping him for 6-7 mil a year for a couple years. Basically he would be like a younger/healthier pavano for us. Nice to have an innings eater like that to count on who can pitch a few real nice games as well. Also it could allow us to trade Correia for whatever we can get. Much rather have Pelfrey penciled as our number 5 for the next couple years and some combo of Meyer, May, Gibson, DeDuno, Josh Johnson?/Lincecum?/etc filling out the first 4 spots.
  17. I could see them giving them each a cup of coffee this sept, especially if more and more trades are made. Neither one will be up full time until next June and that is a GOOD thing. I know people will prob be calling the Twins cheap etc, but with a guy like Sano you absolutely keep that extra year of team control at any cost, especially since the Twins "real" window probably starts in 2015, even though I think they can compete next year.
  18. Arcia struggled mightily? He was actually hitting very well before his late "slump".
  19. What are the odds we can trade Willingham? would he make it far enough in waivers for a team "in the hunt" like the Yankees or someone to put a claim on him? Or would teams like the Astros and other bottom feeders put a claim in to block everyone?
  20. Offer Pelfrey 2 years, 16 million (+6 mil in IP incentives) with a vesting 3rd year option for 11 mil (with 375 IP over two years)
  21. There is a big difference between Aggie and Perkins. Aggie was a pending free agent (as was Erickson) it sucks we didn't get some big haul back, but neither guy was some huge trade target for anyone at the time. Ditto with Liriano. It's hard to get on Ryan too much about July deals, more often then not under Ryan the Twins are not in sell mode in late July.
  22. Yeah, and as mentioned, it would have been the slowest trot in major league baseball this year by someone not named David Ortiz. Also I don't think Ortiz "shows" anyone up on the trots, he is just slow as hell! No excuse for a 20 year old to be doing that and I'm guessing he learned his lesson moving forward. Personally, I think this could be a great thing for Sano, let's see how he responds. Could come back stronger and more determined then ever. Lev, I don't get the "Mauer could learn a thing" etc bit, Mauer is the 2nd best hitting catcher of all time. Yeah he isn't loud and brash but he doesn't need to be, I have never heard one player or management who has ever had an issue of how he is/was as a teammate. Speak softly and carry a big stick applies to the Mega Hunk. Jeter is a pretty soft spoken guy as well and no one questions his "leadership"
  23. Though I strongly agree the twins should get a large Latin presence some way in their system as a whole coaching wise all the way up. I'd still Prefer Gardy as manager and Ozzie as a bench coach though. Have been saying that for years!
  24. Baseball is baseball. The beauty is in every country there are 9 innings to a game, 3 outs to an inning and the bases are 90 ft. You shouldn't just go out of your way to hire a Latin American manager just because there are a lot of Latin players. You should hire the best manager/man for the job regardless of color/background etc. last I checked Miguel Cabrera was doing ok with Leyland as his manager etc etc All I care about is getting the best man for the job...period. And at this point I honestly think it's hardy unless Leyland, Torre, TK or Madden decide they wanna manage the twins all of a sudden.
