Diamond probably gets his last chance to prove he's got something this year next year. And of course, Saturday, the one game that won't be televised at all, we all miss watching our most entertaining pitcher.

They are who we thought they were. Our starting pitchers that is.

The moment Dick starts to talk about the guy's physique it was inevitable that he would hit it out.

    That was dumb.

I can't remember who wrote it, but there was an article about Dylan Bundy needing Tommy John's surgery. The gist was that it wasn't clear that putting a hard inning's cap on young pitchers was actually useful in preventing injuries. I can't remember if it was on baseball prospectus, baseball america or on fangraphs, but they had some interesting data. Now I'm not saying that there shouldn't be some sort of plan, but I'm not sure there is any hard evidence that suggests limiting these guys to roughly 20% inning increases each year makes a real difference.

Sano apparently hit it. The Rock Cats official twitter account, Andrew Walter, and the New Britain Herald beat writer all are saying that Sano hit it. The MiLB gamecasts aren't really reliable, not the same way that MLB version is. Edit: The box score has been corrected. Sano hit the home run. 10th at AA, 26 for the year. September call-up starting to look like a real possibility.

I generally have problems with how players legacies have been effected by the "steroid era". It's ridiculously inconsistent, unfair, and seems to unfortunately correlate with how well liked the player was by the media. I also have issues with the arbitrariness of how MLB defines PED's and how that is decided. That said, I have no sympathy for Ryan Braun and the current crop of guys under investigation. In the 90's and early 2000's there was an argument to be made that so many guys were doing it, and was outright ignored by the powers that be in MLB as long as ratings and stadium attendance went up. Since the Mitchell report, and the revamped testing, there isn't even that excuse. Baseball has never been as rosy as people like to remember. The golden era of baseball was never that golden. Each "era" of baseball has had problems that affected the integrity of the game. There are a lot of guys in the Hall of Fame who probably would have never gotten in if they had played today. A decision is going to have to be made about Hall of Fame candidates who retired in the last 10 years or so. Either you let them all in, or you don't let anyone in. Judging each player case by case hasn't seemed to work to well. Nobody was inducted this year, and it will probably only get more difficult.

I said it after Sano had his two home run game, but it looks like Sano has figured out AA pitching. He's batting .286/.405/.600 the last 10 games. The average has been crawling upward and his OPS is above .850. It's good to see Berrios have a bounce back game. I have to imagine that he's getting tired. He's already thrown more than twice as many innings as he threw last year. I have to believe that it's tougher for young pitchers to adjust to full season ball than it is for hitters. I have no idea how many innings he threw in a year during high school, but if it's anything like Kohl Stewart, it wasn't a lot.

My favorite Twins moment in recent history is Casilla hitting home Gomez in game 163 for the division. One of my favorite Twins photographs ever. It's starting to seem much more distant.

The only player on this team who has a chance at a gold glove is Mauer. Maybe Florimon deserves it, but only Mauer has the popularity and offensive ability to go along with solid defense. Actually Mauer is having his best season behind the plate that he's had in several years.

I'd take that over Stalin's character issues. Could you imagine him being signed in this kind of media environment. Churchill was fine, but he never quite fit into the locker room. At least we never had to hear of a schism in the locker room until after his career.

Rosario has to be a top 100 guy at this point. Rosario has always been able to hit. He's definitely a more advanced hitter than Sano, so it doesn't surprise me to see that he is adjusting faster. I'm curious about his defense at 2nd though. Jason Parks was very down on Rosario's defense when he saw a series. Called him stiff and his footwork bad. It might have been a bad series, as Rosario was still adjusting to AA pitching and might have let it affect him in the field. I haven't heard anything else from others to suggest he couldn't stick at 2nd. This list is a very nice way to get through a monday.

Morneau isn't going to get anything approaching the 15 million he earns this year. If nobody is willing to trade a decent prospect, than I have no problem with them offering him a 2 year/15 million dollar contract. Obviously he wants more, and he'll have to take a large paycut. But if he continues to play like he has this year, who realistically is going to offer him more? He's been a soft hitting 1st baseman for two years now, with a history of concussions. No team is going to offer him a contract approaching the one he is finishing.
  14. Larsbars08
He's far from slow. Watch some videos of him, even his home run trots are fast. For a man his size, he's moves very quickly. Jason Parks rated his running ability as a 5+. Jason Parks ‏@ProfessorParks16h Sano is a much better athlete than people realize; run is 5+; glove will be at least 5; arm is 7; raw 8; hit 5; legit instincts as well
  15. Larsbars08
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Sano isn't yet on the 40 man roster. I think that makes it unlikely to see Sano called up, unless he repeats his performance at Fort Myers in New Britain. I think that Sano is going to have to force the Twins and Terry Ryan's hand this year. The Twins have proven themselves willing to promote guys aggressively this year, but Aaron Hicks showed that the gap from AA to the Majors is a tough one to adapt to. I think that Ryan will give Sano time at AAA before we see Sano even for a brief look at Target Field. I think that Sano finishes the year at New Britain, and most likely starts in Rochester next year, ala Oswaldo Arcia. Edit: And then Phil Mackey just tweeted that Terry Ryan didn't reject calling up Sano in September. So looking like a good possibility if Sano continues to play well in AA.

Let's hope there was a complimentary A-Rod as a centaur postcard. I like to think that Joe Mauer's one night stand gift basket has zubaz's and his most recent mixtape.
  17. Larsbars08
Yeah, Parks said he wouldn't include anyone currently on a MLB team right now. These lists have gotten pretty exciting to look at with Buxton and Sano in the system. Now if only Sano would start hitting better at AA.
  18. Larsbars08
Considering that both Sano and Mauer spent the entire year in Low-A ball despite mashing near the top of the league, the fact that Buxton was promoted at the halfway point likely means that we shouldn't be comparing his career trajectory to other Twins prospects. The Twins promotion of Buxton is downright aggressive when compared to the usual prospect path for the organization. Even if Buxton's OPS drops 150 points, his numbers would still be incredibly impressive for a 19 year old at A+, who also is a wizard in CF. There are still 55-60 games left in the season for him, plenty of time for the Twins to get a measured look at his progress at a higher level. If he continues to do well, there is no reason he won't be starting the season next year in AA.
  19. Larsbars08
Morales never had Pinto's power at any level of the minors. Plus Pinto's year in in A+ and his year in AA this year were far better than any year Morales had. If Pinto continues to hit like he has, there will be a spot in AAA and a spot on the Twins soon. If the Twins are willing to let Doumit catch 40-50 games a year, they'll have no problem with Pinto.
  20. Larsbars08
Horrible? Check the box score again, he allowed 3ER and at least another one of those should have been unearned. Rochester had 3 errors today while Gibson was pitching. The Twins said they wanted more consistency, and he's delivered, allowing 6 ER in his last 19 innings pitched. There really isn't an excuse to keep him down. Is P.J. Walters really going to block Gibson?
  21. Larsbars08
Hasn't UZR/150 been pretty much debunked as useless without a sample size of a few years? I can't speak for his deception abilities or lack thereof, but he seems to have vastly improved his defense over the last month or so. I know that his web gems probably bias me more than anything, but he's seemed much more consistent the longer he's played. He's been described as defensively ready for the big league center field job by scouts and prospect experts for a couple years now, and it's not like he lacks the athleticism. I'd say his more recent exploits are much more indicative of his defensive ability than his horrendous first month.

I think you have to follow the Tampa Bay Rays model, with the occasional overspend on signing your guy when he's still young to an extension. Developing pitching is hard, as the Twins have found and prone to bad luck, but if you draft wisely, spend wise money on the international scene, you should be able to have a pretty good stable of young arms. You can't always be lucky enough to draft a David Price or Matt Moore, but they turned Shields and Davis into young legit pitching prospects and Will Myers as a cherry on top. Honestly, spending big on pitchers in free agency scares the hell out of me. The track record is scary enough. Plus, people complain about Mauer and his contract enough as it is. Imagine if the Twins actually spent 90-100 mil on a guy like Sanchez or some other premiere free agent pitcher and he wasn't Cy Young or got hurt. I just think its too risky for a team that will never swallow payroll like the Yankees or Dodgers.
  23. Larsbars08
I have to include playing at Yankee stadium for 81 games in this conversation. If my memory serves right, Mauer has hit very well in New York, and if he played half a season with that short right field fence, I bet Mauer goes for the fences more often and averages 15 to 20 home runs a year if not more. Right now he hits 10 home runs a year in Target Field, but both Fenway and Yankee Stadium seem to be built for a guy like Mauer to abuse. I will always be happy that the Twins have Mauer, but it is an interesting what if question.
  24. Larsbars08
By itself, I would agree with you. But at this point it's a pattern. I doubt this is the straw that breaks the camel's back, but I imagine that it's starting to pile up for Gardy.

This is all I could think of during the 6th question. It's all just propaganda dude. Walk Hard Drug Scenes - YouTube
