  1. You obviously paid attention in biology class. Good post! Thanks, I make a living out of it.
  2. Actually, I think I can put some light into how mutations occur. The enzymes that do the DNA copying and editing are nearly perfect but not exactly perfect. There is a certain degree of miscopying (I don't remember the exact number but it is close to 1/10000000 DNA base pairs copied. Now, if you think that there are billions of base pairs in the DNA of any living organism (of course, there will be a variation in the amount of DNA from organism to organism, but a prototypical one) then you have thousands of spontaneous mutation per generation. Besides that, you have to add the mutations that are produced by environmental impact (UV light from the sun, chemicals, radioactivity, virus), and the amount increases. That happens in the somatic (in the body cells) as well as in germ line cells (in our case, ovules and sperm). Now, many mutations don't do anything or do little, many are harmful (if they are harmful enough that kill the new formed embryo right away and nobody knows that they even happened), and a few give an advantage to the new formed individual. That is my attempt to summarize evolution at the molecular level. I hope this is helpful, especially to diehard.
  3. It depends. If, let's say, Rangers are asking for Revere in addition to Morneau for Holland (or Holland and XX prospect) well, I would think seriously about it. If it is Revere for a not so good prospect(s), well, I keep Revere.
  4. The thing is: If we are going to be with Liriano, Pavano, etc. and not sign a real improvement, why not keep going with Deduno, DeVries, Hendriks, etc. and save the money? I don't see any real difference in performance. Maybe Frankie can pitch a couple of good games, (althoughat the end of the year I bet you he will end up with an ERA north of 5, lots of walks, etc) but clearly Pavano is at the end of the rope.
  5. This information is what it was expected, and what the Star tribune reported today, that the option was declined. Now, what Thrylos is saying is that they are working in a totally different contract. In order to do so, the Twins have to decline the option.
  6. Well it could be that, if Gardenhire is let go at the end of the year, Molitor could be a "fresh" candidate, without the burden of having worked with Gardy. That would signal a change of direction. If they hire Molitor now, besides what the article says, in the sense of how uncomfortable could it be for Gardy, hiring Molitor as manager later could be seen as "more of the same".
  7. I think also it has a lot to do with catching Vasquez and Deduno, 2 guys that are not easy to catch.
  8. It is reallly hard to justify having Butera catching and Doumit in LF when there are 2 other players in the bench that are actually capable of playing the position. I know Doumit catched yesterday, but he is not going to collapse if he does it 2 days in a row. Doumit catching and Carlson or Mastroianni in LF sounds better than Butera catching and Boumit in LF, but what do I know?
  9. Count me in.
  10. All I can say is that they removed much of my motivation to keep watching the games in September. And looking at the rest of the comments, it seems that I am not alone. Really, the team has been bad the whole year, is playing for nothing right now, why are you gonna watch other that looking at prospects that can give you any hope? No Slama? No Arcia? Come on!
  11. What bring us to tonight's word:new stadiums. For years we've heard that in order to have good teams, franchises need new stadiums, to increase attendance. Actually, it is all the way around, good teams bring people to stadiums, and justify new facilities. You can have all the flashy new stadium that you want, but if your team is bad, after a couple of years, the stadium is going to be empty. See present Twins, see Gophers football. Vikings, please listen. I only hope that the Twins don't fall in the vicious circle of reducing payroll and poor teams because of reducing attendance, which in turn will reduce the attendance further.
  12. I was at the Snappers game and was impressed with Zack Jones. He can throw much harder than any other pitcher that pitched in that game. Opposing hitters looked overmatched.
  13. Who says you can't cut him? It cost money, but you can. They did it with that awuful third baseman (I can't remember his name now)
  14. Nishi does it because he is a good soul. What would be of Cleveland if not for him?
  15. THERE GOES MY FAVORITE SINGLES HITTER! Great Joe!
  16. The Twins just shut out the Sox at Fenwey, but reading the comments, they looked like written by a mother in law. Lighten up!
  17. Regarding to all this roster moves, Blackburn is not listed in the 40-man roster, and in the Rochester roster is listed as "reserve". Anybody knows what it means? Is he definitely out of the 40-man?
  18. I think De Vries in MLB is a disaster waiting to happen, and Deduno, who knows. And that is the big problem, I agree that Blackburn is bad, but there are no really viable replacements available, at least within the organization. Now, if your line of thinking is to use a lost season to take a fly on all these guys, well, that could be.
  19. Thank you Blackie, always putting the ball in the ground,.. eventually
  20. One aspect when drafting high schoolers that is not often mentioned is that they are teenagers. And like any other teenager sometimes they are not sure of what they really want to do. The article mention the case of Matt Moses, that he really did not care much. I don't know but that may be the case for many, like many other kids that start college, and after a year or two change major, sometimes several times. And it is OK, and it is nobody's fault. It is just the process of maturation. I am actually surprise to see that about 2/3 made it.
  21. Can somebody explain to me why Gardy chose the worst hitter of all the available ones to pinch hit?
  22. The alternative is to send down Mastro. He is not used much anyway, and Parmelee can play outfield as well. Not that is anything wrong with sending Butera down. I am just stating alternatives
  23. I guess it depends on what the offer is. Does anybody know what the Blue Jays could offer? I would hate to see Morneau or Willingham for so-so prospects. But if they have a couple of pitchers in AA that are really good...
  24. I am looking at the radar and we may get lucky. The worst of the rain is already south of Target field. and going southeast. If no new storms show up, they might get it in.
  25. I am a Twins fan. But I am a fan of the sport first. For that reason, I will celebrate anybody of Thome's accomplishments, especially the way he did it, the right way. If you don't understand that, you and me have very different ideas of what a sport is.
