  1. The MLBPA can not have let such a scenario slip through the cracks during past negotiations. It's not even worth time to check that such deals must be to everyone's satisfaction.
  2. They play hardball in that league.
  3. Looks like the Virginia legislature is unexpectedly in play, with the trans candidate Danica Roem winning against the anti-LGBTQ firebrand in that district.
  4. Auto-correct is a hell of a drug.
  5. Hic! Friends don't let friends post impaired.
  6. I was wondering where all this was leading.
  7. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oShTJ90fC34
  8. The five pitchers listed are all too expensive, in terms of 40-man space and especially 25-man space. That's the constraining resource, not money, at this time in the rebuild. Guys who are willing to take a MiLB contract, sure.
  9. Mod note: This tangent has gone on for far too long in this thread about free agent possibilities, and further responses will be removed. Start a new thread, if need be.
  10. I've always liked him (have taken him in the Adopt-A-Prospect project), but I'm not sure his floor is quite as a contributing major leaguer even yet. His trade value, if that's part of what you meant by value, is surely close to nil. Physically he is not similar to Aaron Slegers, but in terms of their future roles with the team they probably match up - may make a home on the major league roster for a few seasons, but always on the bubble to be in the rotation. That's kinda valuable and not to be cast aside lightly, but not real real valuable.
  11. Ah, the National RIFLE Association - to paraphrase Homer Simpson, the cause of, and solution to, all of life’s problems.
  12. It is astounding to me that the party comfortable to the faction that professes fear of the Deep State is comfortable with the idea that the solution to gun violence is someone determining people's mental health in such a way that their ability to commit mayhem would be constrained in the slightest. Not that I've heard one specific proposal along those lines, mind you. Bringing up the notion is just a stratagem to draw attention from the NRA. This guy was previously accused of domestic violence. Absent the gun violence, the voices now calling it a mental health issue would be disputing whether the domestic accusations were well founded. Women routinely bring false charges, y'know. The solution to gun violence is now giving such claims credence? As if.
  13. Welcome! Great first-post. Have a look at the TD Comment Policy (nothing of which you came remotely close to violating BTW), and then we look forward to seeing more from you.
  14. Views from overseas likely aren't much changed. I remember a colleague coming over from Germany in 1997 or so expressing concern about concealed carry in Nevada. He of course never had a negative direct encounter with a gun (because we had wide-ranging conversations and I would for sure have heard about it!) during his decade here, but I'd be curious what folks hear from him on the topic of his rootin' tootin' days in the US now that he has moved back to Europe. People's perceptions aren't always completely in line with the actual experience.
  15. I couldn't help noting this off-topic nugget: “I don’t think Derek would take credit for all those trades in Cleveland himself,” Pohlad said. Jim Pohlad speaking, or Captain Obvious?
  16. I'm not sure the dollar value has any bearing in their case, and it's just the third rounder, period. The Twins qualify under this, don't they? If the signing team received revenue sharing and didn’t exceed the luxury tax threshold in the previous season, the team only has to surrender its third-highest pick in the next draft. One team losing a pick, and the other team gaining one, seem to be two separate processes.
  17. "prince fielder" insurance - Not my most challenging internet "dig" of the day. https://sportsday.dallasnews.com/texas-rangers/rangers/2017/10/04/prince-fielder-released-year-playing-last-game-rangers It says in part: The Rangers negotiated with the insurance carrier on the Fielder policy to allow them to release the player and still receive an annual benefit. It is believed the Rangers will essentially receive deferred payments, which reduces the current value of the policy. And this from a year earlier: https://sportsday.dallasnews.com/texas-rangers/rangers/2016/07/21/rangers-lose-insurance-prince-fielders-24-million-salary [T]he Rangers have an insurance policy on Fielder that pays 50 percent of his salary in the event of a long-term injury... they will not recoup any money in 2016. There is a 90-day deductible period before they can file a claim, and there are not 90 days left in the season.
  18. The uncertainty of steps 2 and 3 (turning into 3B) shows that any blueprint lasts only a few days. It's more of a decision tree; if step 2 doesn't pan out then you pivot back to a situation with duplicate talent for 2B - what then?if step 2 returns MLB-ready starting pitching then what's the ripple effect?if step 2 returns relief pitching then does step 3B still stand?now that step 3 has turned into 3B, what's the blueprint for improving starting pitching?I struggle with putting down a single blueprint that I know will be out of date almost before I press Post. To me, a real front office's situation is much more dynamic and requires nimbleness, combined with a coherent initial plan or approach of course. That's just me, though, and it doesn't stop me from asking the above questions of someone else's blueprint.
  19. My optimism doesn't come from any FO quotes I've seen. I'm optimistic the purse strings will be loosened because it's what I'd be doing as a GM, after a year of "let's find out what we've got" following a 59-win season, one that went better than many people forecast as likely.
  20. I think the question is whether the insurance policy kicks in.
  21. There is a reason the innings weren't more.
  22. In many lines of work, QC is a good place to put someone who has most of the skills but lacks something crucial, such as decisiveness. The right guy'll spot things that most would overlook. It might be Vavra's true calling, who knows.
  23. Does making it obvious damage the trade value of the blocked prospects?
  24. There will be no shortage of rankings, so maybe I shouldn't add it to this thread, but 538.com yesterday ranked all teams' 5-year futures based on current "team characteristics", in an article mostly about the Astros and Dodgers. Twins place 9th. https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/which-teams-future-is-brightest-the-astros-or-dodgers/
  25. I saw the callup as strictly 40-man roster management. They temporarily needed an arm, they didn't want to drop someone in order to call someone else up, so up he came. His brief tryout in the majors probably helped seal the decision that he wasn't making enough progress. It's too bad to have to make that decision on a 23-year old - MLB rules on protecting prospects probably do more harm than good for some players, rushing them needlessly, and a decision to sign a kid from the Domincan at age 17 involves too much gamesmanship for my taste.
