  1. Depending on what is meant by "several" years, I have to go with False. He's a Three Tool player, where five-tool players are perennial all-stars and four-tool guys are solid starters or better. In the three-tool range, you're getting down to OK starters and platoon players. With his lack of power and lack of arm, he's not the right guy in your lineup for various situations, and that means getting subbed out (or the one being subbed in). What's worse, one of his legitimate tools is speed and that is something that can decay precipitously. (By contrast, look at Thome for an example of power being a tool that can last indefinitely.) I can't see him being a starter after he loses a step. I hope for the best of course, but I don't foresee him as a starter for a good team at age 30, and that's what I assume is meant by "several" years. Fourth outfielder on a World Series team? Absolutely.
  2. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/02/rich-harden-to-miss-2012-season.html Rich Harden will miss the 2012 season while he recovers from a shoulder operation.
  3. Yes, because he was always a total strikeout machine up to now.
  4. On Sunday morning in Tampa, tell Liriano that he’s going to throw 7 innings. He can do it in 90 pitches or 150, but he’s not coming out of there until he gets at least 21 outs. One caveat to this. You can't bluff, and you have to have a Plan B just in case. If you are at the point of putting him into the bullpen with one more failure, then this strategem is as good a shot as any. If he has to come out after 4.1 innings anyway, then he's banished to the bullpen; if that wouldn't be your move, then you can't try this ultimatum. Since I'm ready to put him in the pen, I like your idea.
  5. Patients sometimes interpret what the doctor tells them, differently than the doctor thought he was saying.
  6. These all sounded to me, at the time, like rumors planted by the Twins, trying to goose the market a bit and get the most for Santana that they could. Note the Think Factory item says the source was the Twins and the Dodgers were "considering". It's very unclear that the Dodgers were actually interested even in Kemp (plus lower-grade prospects) alone for Santana, much less throwing in Kershaw. If Kemp had actually been dangled, Smith would have jumped on the deal. Ditto for the speculative offers from the Red Sox and Yankees - they were all trial balloons, no concrete offer was ever on the table from these other teams. Just my opinion, of course.
  7. Gray has two of the team's three wins. He's indispensable.
  8. Designating someone a one-inning guy means high leverage innings when you do put him in; no bullpen has a one-inning mopup guy. So then, how comfortable would you be bringing Liriano in for the eighth inning with a one-run lead? There's also the question of getting him to accept a one-inning high leverage role. Just because Perkins did, doesn't mean Liriano would; two very different people. If someone doesn't embrace the role, he's not likely to succeed. I'm fine with putting Francisco in the pen, if it's to find himself again, during low-leverage situations.
  9. If he's valuable for his defense and also has a potent enough stick to want to give him late-game chances, doesn't that paint him as a candidate to be a starter?
  10. Don't be all butt-hurt.
  11. Small sample size and all that... but Towles is off to the slowest start of the three. Butera is the one, ironically, who has promising looking AAA stats, due in large part to a home run. It will be interesting which one they bring up. Towles looked good in Ft Myers.
  12. Counting turnstile clicks is not the same as revenue. TV/radio money in the upper midwest is a lot lower than in many of the markets that are in the majors, and average ticket price is higher elsewhere as well. The Twins aren't "small market", but their spending on salaries is right around the middle of the pack, and that's about where it belongs.
  13. Mastroianni had a quote during Spring, contrasting the Twins camp to Toronto's, saying that if he made a play like that for Toronto he would get reamed (his word) for it, while Gardy told him quietly in the dugout "let's keep the 360's to a minimum, OK?" Wonder if Gardy was that circumspect with Delmon, though.
  14. No criticism intended, really, but the thrust of this article is something we all knew at the end of the 2011 season: if Mauer and Morneau don't contribute in-line with their established careers then the 2012 team has no shot at even being a .500 team. To actually contend, the pitching needs to magically improve as well. The team record at this early juncture coincides pretty well with these two simple observations.
  15. Mauer's GIDP doesn't worry me. If we can get someone on in the 9th, Clete will end it with another HR.
  16. He had a career year last year. That's all.
  17. [h=2]Who do you want to see replace Baker? [/h] Terry Ryan. It's his job.
  18. Then Gardy should do great if he's sent down there too.
  19. I've long felt the same argument applies to your batters, too. Hustle guys like Punto make their mark every now and then during the season, and then when you insert them in the post-season can you be at all surprised if they collect an ofer?
  20. I'll hold my 20/20 hindsight for after the game.
  21. I don't take many cabs but this seems like the profile of most of the bank tellers I encounter lately.
  22. Used to seem that way all the time with Scott Erickson, too. Lights-out first inning would too often translate into the showers by the fifth. Other games he'd struggle in the early innings then cruise into the eighth or ninth. Go figure.
  23. A team's made an offer? Who do we get?
  24. Very tough story for anyone to read who can correctly process this snippet: The doctors had emerged from the operating room with an update. Reese had only a 50-50 chance to live.
