  1. I'll go with Better. No deep thinking behind it. A BA close to .300 and other stats in keeping, for an OPS north of .800.
  2. Credit the owners for being a little less stupid and obvious than the time they got nailed for collusion.
  3. None of the Twins' talent evaluators probably think in terms of confidence intervals, but it's what they mean if they say someone's ready. Watching him throw day after day, seeing spring training competition flail against him - the evaluator may conclude the guy's ready, and even though I'm a skeptic from looking at the actual AAA numbers pre-injury I'm not fool enough to bet against that conclusion if it comes.
  4. I'll have to look, but I don't think this scenario is covered in my old copy of Knotty Problems of Baseball. It's well known that you can be out for passing a runner in front of you, and there are rules to prevent shenanigans like "stealing" first starting from second in an attempt to draw a throw, but just stopping at second base for no reason when then umpire continues to twirl his index finger? It's a good (or maybe just fun) question.
  5. Beer has stopped me from finding the ballpark. Oh dear, are we running afoul of the posting guidelines, yet again?
  6. I hear there are some very good beers at Cedar Rapids and New Britain this year, so by 2015 the concessions landscape at Target Field might be quite a lot different. Proper fermentation takes time, my brother. I don't know if five dollars is low enough to cause the kind of problems you mean. Maybe I'm just too cheap. I also wonder if Cleveland's cups o' beer will be small in 2013 than they were in 2012.
  7. I'm not sure it's quite as simple as that. From the owners' perspective, it may accomplish exactly what they hoped for, making an example of one or two players and curbing salary pressure a little (except for the very elite players). I expect the urgency for coming back to the bargaining table over this will come from the players' union side, but the owners will agree to modifications now that their "point" has been made this offseason.
  8. That's because you never played the game.
  9. Does anyone have insight what kind of doubles these were? The ringing kind that score a decent runner from first? Or the kind where Darin legged out what might have been singles for most players?
  10. One of the joys of reading a public forum is finding posters who are able to get inside of other posters' heads and accurately tell me what is actually going on inside.
  11. I'm taking a guess that when the next CBA negotiation occurs, or maybe even sooner, this topic will come up for some kind of modification, like a sliding scale for the draft-pick penalty as time marches toward opening day. It's not healthy for the sport if bigger-name players have to sit out until May or whenever.
  12. They do. And then they sign with the highest bidder or the one who gives them the best chance at a ring. As would you or I.
  13. > Arizona Diamondbacks – How about this… Michael Tonkin’s brother-in-law is on the D-Backs 40 man roster. http://www.skypoint.com/members/ashbury/fry.jpg
  14. I like the photo in the article: a few gnarled hands remind us of all the dings that happen in a baseball career. And also of the old joke about two catchers meeting at an old-timers game, where it took them half an hour to untangle after shaking hands.
  15. I root for all Twins to step up, but Benson especially so because there's a slight domino effect if he can claim CF: it places Mastroianni in his natural role as 4th outfielder, replacing someone defensively in late innings where they are leading and pinch-hitting (for SS) or pinch-running (for LF or 1B) when they are behind, *and* lets the GM keep Hicks in AAA for extra seasoning if that is his judgement.
  16. > Mastroianni has yet to attempt to steal home in pro ball, mainly because the Twins never let him I doubt many readers of TwinsDaily would be misled, and a minor point at most, but Darin spent 2007-2011 in Toronto's system and only 2012 in Minnesota's.
  17. I was disagreeing with "he was sandbagging", or at least my interpretation of what was meant by that. No one would try to lull an opponent into trying to take an extra base unwisely in a spring game. No one would hope that in a regular season game some opponent might remember "that guy in right made a poor throw in early Spring Training, let's run wild on him" and gain some easy assists. So, in effect, I was wondering, "my brother, where are we going with this" about sandbagging in February. What next, the hidden ball trick on every baserunner?
  18. Since I previously described as like a parabola the "slope" you mention, with an optimal point if you actually had a forecast of it, there's an automatic braking effect if you try to go indefinitely. And the parabola is so shallow for average players, not to mention only a few years long, that worrying about it should not be a general rule. But for studs, it's a consideration that a GM would be derelict in duty not to consider.
  19. As was pointed out, one of the three is destined as a fourth outfielder on a good team, so make that Two and a Half Men.
  20. Yes, this is how the game is played in early Spring. Inside baseball all the way. How many hidden ball plays did Colabello and Clement run for outs at first, four or five?
  21. Came here expecting a gibe about double plays, leaving disappointed. They may be expecting twins at the moment but I imagine Gardy will talk them into triplets.
  22. It's amazing what a change in Avatar can do.
  23. > Mauer was the best in the AL last year at not making outs. Among players with enough appearances, no one in the NL topped him either. No reason to include the qualifier; Mauer was the best last year at not making outs.
  24. If it worked in the Twenties, it could work now.
