  1. He is at this moment an ineffective hero to anyone's cause except maybe a couple of Twins trying to win a job.
  2. Anyone still on the Deibinson train, after that iron-glove act in the 9th?
  3. The mlb.com play-by-play shows: Desmond Jennings doubles (1) on a ground ball to left fielder Josh Willingham. Can someone please explain how the play went? Is "ground ball" a poor description of what went for a routine double? Or is Willingham's play on this ball a poor excuse for left fielding?
  4. Which way's the wind blowing? I'm not facing him unless it's blowing out. He's unhittable otherwise.
  5. "C'mon, I asked you a simple question. Yes, no, or where'd ya hear that?"
  6. Wins, maybe? Teammates' stats being better when he's the starter? If the effect is there, but comes from him just being on the roster and a helpful presence every day, he can do that on the bench. Or stay on as a coach next year.
  7. Are you prepared to say that Buxton's ceiling is below that? What's his uncorrectable flaw?
  8. Flo? Eddie, Flo? Flo and Eddie? I didn't catch that until now! Approves:
  9. They're on baseball-reference.com for each player. Mauer was bad with RISP in 2013, relative to other situations; he was good with RISP in 2012. I don't read much into changes like that. League-wide, batters tend to gain .015 or so of OPS, in RISP situations (or anyone on) versus bases empty.
  10. There aren't any sure recipes for anything in baseball, particularly where it comes to the 24th or 25th man on the roster.
  11. But you did say it tells you little. If that's big enough to include one-quarter to one-third, then we're probably not in disagreement.
  12. I chose Mastro as my TD Adopt-a-prospect a couple of seasons ago, and I mourn his apparent demise. He is like the son I never had.1 1 Because my actual two sons are like their father, and never showed baseball talent that would support a professional career.
  13. For The Win!
  14. ...with the pitcher doing everything he can to *not* allow a fly ball. I'm not the biggest RBI guy, but it's not *nothing*. Also, most RBI aren't racked up this way, and looking at end-cases can be instructive but not particularly definitive.
  15. As played by John Candy.
  16. Please alert the moderators if you need assistance.
  17. Moderator's note: Florimon is the topic only as far as he relates to the subject of this thread, Escobar. Please don't throw out red meat to those who want to discuss the front office, pro and con. We like to allow latitude in tangents of discussion, but this is how threads go off the rails.
  18. "Hit well", and then "hit well with men on second and third" usually will take care of itself. Maybe not at the high school level, but usually at the level of ball we're talking about. Yes, I guess I'm saying that anything with the word "clutch" in it is my nominee for most over-rated stat. / edit - is that really what the OP was asking, though?
  19. What counts as a routine play also changes as you near the major league level. The comment by itself doesn't really tell me whether progress has stopped or not. I think it's already been mentioned that "routine play" was the knock on Florimon when he first arrived, and you don't hear it now, so evidently he progressed even into his mid-20s. I'll need to read something worse before I write off D. Santana.
  20. And just to be clear, as Riverbrian reminds me in another thread, I was a terrible player at age 23, likewise at 14 and 19 and 26 and 30, ditto now at age fifty-mumble-mumble - it would have been a waste of anyone's time to have me in a minor league system at age 23 or any age. I'm not saying that age by itself makes a prospect worthwhile; you want to see progress too. Looking at Santana's minor league hitting record, I'm seeing progress. I don't know how to judge his defense from afar; maybe someone up close sees a red flag there that says give up, but that's not what I'm reading.
  21. I didn't say one ought to. My attempt at a whimsical reply to Brian was meant simply to say that Florimon is the worst hitter in the lineup, that and no more. If you want to go about fixing a bad offense, the worst bat might not be a terrible place to start. But no, you don't blame an entire offense on one guy.
  22. With competent coaching and many years of patience, I might aspire to someday become a complete liability. Right now, I'm just not that good.
  23. I chose Mastro as my TD Adopt-a-prospect a couple of seasons ago, and I mourn his apparent demise. He is like the son I never had.1 1 Because my actual two sons are like their father, and never showed baseball talent that would support a professional career.
  24. Moderator's note: the original poster made a side comment about RBI, a responder made a counter-argument. Interesting, perhaps, but let's not turn this thread into a debate about the side comment; start a new thread if you feel so-motivated.
