  1. Number One Son will be in Pittsburgh. Maybe I'll be able to pass along some first-hand reports a day or two afterward.
  2. That was in fewer PA. His Hurricane Hazle year. Not a sustainable level of performance. Oh, and I just checked. His vaunted pitching performance? He had a FIP of 4.10. Pfff. Overrated.
  3. And there's the heart of the problem. 100 pitches don't get him past the 6th inning most times.
  4. He probably shouldn't. 2011: .167 / .210 / .239 / .449 . Commiseration? Possibly.
  5. I think it's standard for a pitcher to sit on the bench and watch the rest of the inning. Going straight to the clubhouse when removed mid-inning even gets construed as sulking, if I'm not mistaken about those 'unwritten rules' - the runners on base are his responsibility and he should care what happens, yadda yadda. I wouldn't hang Trevor for that particular action.
  6. Last 3 games (counting today's short stint): 1 for 8. I'll see your small sample size, and raise you a smaller one. Here's hoping he continues the good trend you highlighted, and rakes in AAA. Then, he'll be back Real Soon Now.
  7. I'm sure the decision was made before Vargas's weak attempt at the grounder in the ninth, which allowed a meaningless additional run for the Rays. But a .663 OPS (coming into today) isn't acceptable when the fielding skills are so minimal, and that play punctuated the imminent roster move.
  8. I saw him do a couple of these in Spring at Ft Myers, and I was surprised by how quickly he got onto the ball, and impressed with the accurate throw to first on the run. In one of the same games I saw him boot a routine grounder hit a little to his left. I'm in the camp that believes he currently* has the tools to play the position, and that the errors he makes are the kind that can be eliminated with experience. *Unless he eats himself out of a job.
  9. In fairness, some billions are made due to the incredible leverage that is possible in today's global economy. The effect on the people you mention is the same, but they aren't specifically targeted. For instance when Amazon.com got big, and made their founders rich, a lot of middle-class jobs went away because shopkeeping suddenly wasn't as valuable. The scale of this is something Adam Smith simply had no way of anticipating, and yet our economic theory is still guided by his world of blacksmiths and general store owners.
  10. Here's my post-game summary of what we all just witnessed:
  11. Two grand slams, but then we'll still need a two-run shot. See how insurance runs work? Changes the strategy totally.
  12. http://thumbs.dreamstime.com/x/garlic-bread-4002524.jpg
  13. Does Mauer get the ball that got past Vargas? I think so. It let the Rays get an insurance run, there. Makes it 11-1. CBU.
  14. This one may be my fault. I arrived right about when Duensing began. It was 3-1 at the time. I don't know what I did to jinx them into 10-1 (and counting).
  15. 8-1, end of 8. CBU. / we can at least do that.
  16. The lack of response to this is all the proof I need that this is a slow Game Thread.
  17. Yeah, I wondered at the time Redmond was hired whether it was a good career move. You never know, even at a relatively young age, when you'll get another offer. And managers are hired to be fired, everywhere. Still it had to cross his mind to just say thanks but no thanks.
  18. The death pool I am closest to covers this case specifically in their rules. No penalty is assessed, but it's considered poor form, for being found out as the culprit.
  19. Wasn't a particularly constructive suggestion, I know.
  20. That's it in a nutshell, isn't it?
  21. I see you clarified. Still, I want to recommend this old favorite that your question reminded me of. Funk/blues - tinged with the disco of the era, but whatcha gonna do. (Warning, PG-13 lyrics and adult theme. She's nasty but fun.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hiCfbkPY0I
  22. Wow, those sound like really great seats! Luxury box?
  23. Since the last report, Vielma has continued his lackluster production at the plate. In 14 AB he batted .214 with no extra-base hits. He drove in a run with a sac-fly and it looks like he bunted someone over once. He also had a throwing error and another fielding error during this span. No glove will support those hitting numbers in the long run, but not exhibiting spotless play further harms his cause. Still, he's young, and the learning curve is steep for almost everyone, so I remain hopeful he figures some things out soon.
