  1. Yeah, what threw me off was that the cartoonist was sloppy and made the two symbols look the same.
  2. There is an active thread on Fernandez in TD's Other Baseball forum.
  3. Yes, because if there's one group in the region that is universally admired and respected, and is viewed as being impartial with no agenda of their own to put forward nor grudges to nurse, it's the Kurds. NATO ally Turkey in particular surely is having no heartburn about nearby Kurds flexing some military muscle.
  4. Central Canada: the South of the North
  5. There would be some entertainment value in watching a corner infielder working in the bullpen, too.
  6. On Palacios: "He'll run better as he gets older and stronger." Kind of an odd comment. Don't know if I ever heard a player singled out in quite that way before.
  7. Definitely a good read.
  8. Minor league free agent deal? Sure. Rule 5? No way, not even if he were younger.
  9. "Here's your player back. I think we mighta broke 'im."
  10. Why is vichyssoise a soup, but my morning bowl of Lucky Charms in milk is not?
  11. I've just sent a note to b-r.com about the lefty-right mixup. We'll see if they respond. The fact milb.com has it wrong too suggests there's an error in the database the Twins provide.
  12. Hey, come on! No spoiler alerts for the n00bs?
  13. I believe Trevor May had exactly this problem in his first stint with the Twins. They should talk to one another.
  14. Moderator's note: if I wake up tomorrow and find a thread on Vargas has turned into yet another Mauer thread...
  15. Plouffe is very slow afoot and would be a statue in the outfield. Sano is for the present still blessed with decent speed.
  16. I don't know MLR's source but I use this: http://www.forbes.com/mlb-valuations/list/ It says that its numbers are as of last March. From that table, I come up with the Twins being about $15M below median on revenue. So, it's close to whatever he is referring to.
  17. When do teams have to submit their protected list for the rule-5 draft? I think we'll see Kang signed shortly after that date, because I believe signings after that are automatically protected.
  18. He's listed as a corner outfielder. Without CF skills (not that we need to lock up CF for someone else than Buxton at the moment), from his stats I am guessing his bat doesn't play in the majors.
  19. Adding in major-league-ready, that is not trivial to acquire.
  20. The other approach: try to use the bullpen as a way to get him some success in the majors. Have him concentrate on just his best two pitches for one inning at a time. If not even that works, then down to AAA and let them figure something out with him. But if he's got good results, have him add his third pitch at about the six week mark, and when that's clicking then stretch him out with some longer relief stints, then finally move him into the starting rotation for hopefully 5 inning starts to begin with.
  21. I wouldn't attempt to draw exact parallels. It's sometimes said that History does not repeat itself but it often rhymes. I'm just looking to the past for guidance. I'll note, though, that the unpleasantness in 1930s Europe arose from a previous war that Germans felt they were continuing to be punished over. Unjust humiliation when destiny should instead have them on top was a significant motivating factor. I'm not against trying to placate those who can be. But this outfit sounds implacable. When the initial negotiating stance is "we want you praying daily facing toward Mecca, or else dead," compromise is difficult (to paraphrase Golda Meir's famous line). But speaking of repeats, I bet ISIS hopes to replicate this 7th century success:
  22. I would tease you for an incomplete attempt at Swiftian-caliber satire. Except... that the Republicans' breathless and frantic demand of presidential candidates of both parties to jump through the hoop of uttering the phrase "radical Islam" and similar constructions, gives inspiration to people who would like to take steps perhaps less horrendous sounding than genocide but not too much better spirited. Imagine if a Paris-style attack or worse were unleashed in the US under a Lindsey Graham administration, and the horrors he would unleash in response. It's an age where it's almost impossible to write satire that goes beyond what people are already thinking.
  23. This proposal sounds to me a lot like the appeasement of Germany in the 1930s. "Lebensraum," was all they wanted, at first. Later on they decided they would like some additional living space or elbow room or whatever, please. Or if more successful in terms of containment, the proposal smacks somewhat of the reservations that were set up for Native Americans - with the emphasis on letting a group live within their traditional practices. That solution hasn't worked out to the satisfaction of all, to say the least. The other analogy that comes to mind is the formation of Israel out of land owned at that time by others. That solution has endured for over half a century but at significant ongoing costs. ISIS will almost surely want Mecca to be within the caliphate, while other Muslims will want nothing of the sort. Strife will be perpetual, and both sides will blame whoever set up the "unjust" boundary lines.
  24. Park is 3 years younger than Mauer and several pounds lighter in weight. I seem to recall Park has played a little third base, which suggests he's not a noodle arm. And I know from watching him on the basepaths that Mauer is slow. So I'd try Park out there sooner than I'd try Mauer.
