  1. I would be surprised if Herrmann plays anywhere other than the outfield during this call-up. I think he's more like the emergency catcher for Gardy rather than the 3rd catcher. But I think the real question is - can Herrmann throw a good breaking ball?
  2. Sentimentally, sure, sign him up for one year to be the 25th Man the way that Cleveland/Colorado have been using Jason Giambi - or if both Willingham and Morales are gone, I could see a case for signing him to be a full-time DH. I'd prefer the DH at-bats going to a combo of Parmelee/Kennys Vargas/Mauer/Pinto. I agree with most here that the outfield spots should go to our prospects and young talent. Arcia is the only lock right now for 2015, I bet Danny Santana will get a long look to be the opening day CF, then it's Rosario/Hicks to fight it out to make the team. If they bring Fuld back he can still be a decent 4th outfielder. Would be nice if they upgraded with a trade or free agency with a good LF. Cuddy gets a sentimental vote from me, but I think ultimately it would be better for the Twins and Cuddyer to wait until his playing days are over for the reunion.
  3. Neat. good for him! No Morneau, though, that is pretty dumb. Hope he's the "additional 5th Member" of the NL Derby Lineup.
  4. Cuellar is on the Sunday morning pre-game show on KTWIN from time to time, maybe it's a perfect question to ask him?
  5. The Future is tomorrow! I think the Twins are still fun to watch this year (more than in the recent past), but I am also looking forward to seeing more of the youth movement. From the sound of the rumor mill, it seems the Twins might be deal away some veterans soon.
  6. From the sound of things, Gardy was pretty mad about Nolasco's performance. Is Ricky forgiven now because he chose not to disclose an injury?
  7. Well. Pain all season. Couldn't get loose. It's too bad he felt he had to hide his injury - he could have been a late scratch for the Yankee game and Deduno or Swarzak could've taken his place. In general, what is the benefit of hiding an elbow issue? Seems like a lose-lose situation. You either increase the severity of the injury, pitch poorly, or both. Maybe it's another one of those unwritten rules. . .
  8. sorry- he had a relief appearance in Spring Training this year (which I realize, starters don't always start in spring training games) , and that combined with some of the articles I re-read made me think they had demoted him to the bullpen before he was sent to AAA this spring.
  9. yeah - I did have high hopes for Worley when the Twins made the trade, it just didn't work out.
  10. For me, it can be a case by case thing. Like I said before, I don't blame the Twins for Worley's failure or success - I think Worley has always had the potential to be good, but he is a bit of a head case. My biggest criticism with the Twins' management style overall is that they give very long leashes to players with ML-experience, but will send down the young players or let them rot in the minors for years (Slama) without getting a chance to fail in the big leagues. They've been very stubborn about re-building the team, which has resulted in lots of at-bats for guys that won't be wearing a Twins uniform when they do make it back to the playoffs some day. The guys that will be there will have less ML experience than they maybe could have had.... It's all guesswork and assumptions from me, though - I think Worley's problems were Worley's. There is some amount of evidence pointing to the Twins recognizing the issues early (april 2013), and acting accordingly (they sent him to AAA to work it out, then when the issues remained in Spring Training they cut their losses.) .
  11. It might be a good idea, assuming the Twins are going to stick with Ryan/Gardy/Anderson until they quit on their own, to have some interview/face time with the coaches before acquiring a player. I wonder if they do that. This next bit is probably completely unfair to Nolasco, but he gives the impression that he isn't very easy to coach. That he might be resistant to changing his mechanics or approach. Again, not really fair and I don't know if its true or not, but the impression I'm getting is the coaches and Nolasco might not be on the same page right now. So, if that's the case here - maybe it was same thing with guys like Garza, Lohse, Liriano, and Worley - what do the Twins do about it? Is there someone in HR that can have a team-building exercise for these guys?
  12. I don't really fault the Twins for Worley's poor performance with the Twins, nor do I think his success is just the Pirates coaches. I think in both cases, Worley has made his own bed. All the Worley stuff aside, I think there are enough examples in which the coaching staff and the front office have stuck with veterans too long out of misplaced loyalty. Even Worley was praised by Terry Ryan in the off-season. From the same article in which Worley stated he has no control over his weight, Ryan said that he didn't need to worry about Worley because Worley had been in the league for 2 years...
  13. I think they did identify the flaw in April of 2013, and he didn't make the adjustment. Now that he's having some modest success, he's conveniently throwing everyone else under the bus for missing his greatness.
  14. Nah. I blame Worley. http://www.twincities.com/ci_22812207/minnesota-twins-pitcher-vance-worley-hopes-less-is "For me, the offseason is a chance for me to actually get back on a normal eating schedule," he said. "During the season, I just get fat. There's nothing I can do." - Worley. http://www.twincities.com/ci_23065872/minnesota-twins-vance-worley-has-tuned-up-now "It was my mechanics," Worley said. "Things have gone well over there in the bullpen; now it's just a matter of getting it to transfer over to the game." - Worley. 4/19/2013 Apparently Worley did work on his mechanics in 2013, at the request of Anderson, and he still stunk. They looked at how he pitched in Philly, tried to get him to go back to that, and he didn't deliver. He lost weight after being traded in 2012, but it wasn't enough. He lost more weight this off season, and he's finally starting to come around. Maybe the Twins weren't patient enough with him, but I don't think that he was making much of a good impression on the coaches or the front office here. He wore out his welcome pretty quickly. I don't mean to be a defender of the Twins' coaching staff, but I think using Worley's word is not a fair assessment.
  15. So, bascially what I'm reading here is that Worley has no control over his own mechanics and only watches video if it's shown to him. He stunk last year, and it's everyone's fault but his own. I would like to hear the Twins side of the story. I wouldn't be surprised if getting demoted (twice, to the bullpen, then AAA) and essentially traded for nothing gave him the kick needed to start listening to his coaches a little more closely. Maybe it's all true and the Twins coaches didn't look at any video of Worley before his injury. Or they did look at it but couldn't see that there was a difference? Seems pretty hard to believe.
  16. Thome? I agree though, it's been rare that the Twins have been just one piece away, so it's hard to tell what the strategy might should that situation arise again...
  17. yeah - better to get a higher upside single-A guy than a AA or even AAA marginal prospect at this point. The Twins are best served stockpiling as much young talent as they can get- if they can swing a deal for a player with better potential but is farther away from the big leagues, they should go for it.
  18. D'Backs also had that trade with NYY, sending the Yankees Brandon McCarthy for Vidal Nuno. I think getting a younger SP (preferably a LHP, I agree that there's not much Lefty starting pitching in the Twins' org) for Correia would be awesome. Another younger SP and/or OF prospect (someone that can play CF) for Willingham would be great. If there are teams out there willing to deal some even marginal prospects for the Twins' veterans, it would be a good move for the Twins to make right now.
  19. Here's that blog: http://www.twinsdaily.com/entry.php/5050-Who-gets-traded-this-year
  20. I agree that it seems most trades at the deadline are for players in the last year of their contracts. It would interest me to see some teams trying to break that tradition, though. I do wonder (based on that Astros leak earlier) if teams ask for too much for longer term contract players. It might make them harder to move, especially at the deadline, when teams are trying to get the guy they want before someone else does. When you're asking about several players from several teams, you probably take the best deal you think you can find as soon as you find it. If you're a seller, you've got time to wait for a better deal in the offseason. It's maybe similar logic to wanting relievers to start a new inning rather than come in with runners on base if possible.
  21. I want to take this opportunity to apologize to the Twins defense by using them to make excuses for Nolasco back in May. The high BABIP that Nolasco has is not just bad luck, and it certainly isn't bad defense alone. He's giving up frozen ropes all over the field. I do think something needs to be done about his spot in the rotation. In a three year contract it may be early to dump him, but he doesn't need to start every fifth day if he's just going to have a terrible game that way. Skip his turn once, or demote him to bullpen duty, or something like that. Use that extra time to really focus on his location and see if there's something off about his mechanics that's making him lose velocity on his fastball.
  22. see, this is why I was hoping they'd get 4 outs after that gamecast confusion earlier. They really could've used it here.
  23. I'm imagining a cat with trifocals.
  24. Gardy: "Guys, can you get after it more?"
  25. yikes. Gardy's gonna have to come up with some serious managin' here.
