  1. A strike out per inning? Nice work, Gibson!
  2. I could see the Twins still in the race near the deadline (say, within 5 games of the AL central lead) and be "Buyers" while still trading away some combo of Correia, Willingham or Morales, Duensing or [name your bullpen arm not named Perkins]. I think Kevin Correia in particular is just sticking around as long as he's building trade value once July rolls around.
  3. There's debate within the SABR community about how to handle BABIP - there are components of it that are luck, components that depend on the hitter, components that depend on the defense (both skill and defensive shifts), and variables like the kind of "stuff" a pitcher has on a given day. This article on Baseball Prospectus has a ton of the arguments for and against BABIP's relationship to luck: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=20140 Back to the original topic - Whether Pino can hang his hat on superior skills or superior luck, either way management has decided that they'd rather have Pino than Deduno on Thursday, and they might (and probably will) make another move based on how Pino does against the White Sox. I think the move is based a great deal on Deduno's last two bad starts, and the Front office wanting to see someone else take his turn this time through the rotation. It was Pino's turn in the rotation, and he's been better than Deduno so far this year.
  4. Is this contradiction in Gardy's statement evidence that really doesn't have as much influence on the roster moves as he gets credit for? I predict that Pino will do well in his first start (assuming they get the game in, I think it might be rained out) because the competition will be unfamiliar with his stuff and Pino should be coming in with some confidence. I mean, if I got promoted over May and Meyer, I'd feel pretty confident!
  5. Puck hit for more power, but I think a person would be hard pressed to find a better hitter than Tony Gwynn in the expansion era. I think Puck also had a slight edge defensively, though Gwynn was no slouch in RF (he played a respectable CF in 1989 as well)
  6. The Royals played the short game, I personally hope the Twins opt for something longer term. It's hard to fault the Royals for being proactive. For as bad as they've been for so long, I'm sure Royals fans are very happy with last year.
  7. If the Twins did manage to offer a contract to Jon Lester and he signed it, I bet they would find a spot for him. I would agree that it's not going to be an immediate need going into 2015, and I'd prefer they spent the money elsewhere (OF, for instance) if they are chasing Free Agents.
  8. I think building the foundation of the team is essential. The Twins could try to trade for Price, for instance, but it doesn't solve all the problems at once. Also, if the Twins are looking to sign an Ace as a free agent, have a great supporting cast is a factor for the free agent. It's different for every player - sometimes they just are looking for the biggest contract, but most marquee free agents would pick a team that will win games and be competitive. They are going to get paid no matter who they sign with, so winning is important. The more competitive the roster gets, the easier it will be sign a guy like Grienke (or potential 2015 Free Agent Jon Lester...)
  9. We keep hearing that this time is different, that the team is better this year than the last three years, and I still believe that to be a true statement. I just wonder when that true statement will be reflected in the standings.
  10. I agree with all of that - I do think that once you're in the playoffs, the odds go out the window. The Twins have had some bad experiences in the postseason under Gardenhire, but I think it's as likely that they could turn the tables on someone in a short series this time around. A .500 record seems like a reasonable measure to say "buy/stand pat" or "sell"
  11. Zimmer seems like he would be a fitting nominee for the Buck O'Neil award . . .
  12. I'm holding out hope for a .500 season, so I will say over. Fingers crossed for more addition by subtraction in the rotation and the bullpen, and the health of the hitters to improve and maintain through the rest of the year.
  13. The two "aces" available this trade deadline (at least rumored to be available) are David Price from Tampa Bay and Jeff Samardzija from the Cubs. Of the two, Price has the better likelihood of being an Ace for the Twins. However, Tampa has been asking for quite a haul for their players whenever they have been sellers. Either player will probably mean losing one or more top prospect. I don't think the Twins will go for that. I think Kansas City's mistakes in going all-in for James Shields were A) they acquired their Ace before the supporting cast was ready and they gave up too much for a pitcher that is very good, though not on quite the same level as Price is.
  14. I guess the follow up question to all of this is, would it be worth making the playoffs and being bounced out immediately? Or is the team better off accepting that they should be building to make a "serious" attempt several straight years of playoff runs by selling as high as possible on the veteran assets they have now. I'm sure the fans (myself included) would be overjoyed by seeing another playoff game at Target Field this year - but would it be at the expense of seeing a World Series in 2016 or 17 because the Twins kept some of these players this year (or traded assets for "rentals")?
  15. Also, they've been replaced by guys that do both - Mike Trout, Albert Pujols (in his prime), Miguel Cabrera.
  16. I was looking through old articles on Mr. Gwynn and found this interview with Gwynn and Stan Musial about hitting. Some really good stuff from two of the greatest hitters of all time. http://www.sportingnews.com/mlb/story/2009-07-10/talking-hitting-stan-musial-and-tony-gwynn
  17. I did hear Gardy say at least twice on the pre-game that Nuñez should not be sitting on the bench injured for a week or more, that they would give him a couple days at most, but they can't afford to be short handed for that long. It was good to hear him say that given that they already went though that this year when Mauer was out for a week with his back issue. It may have been better to DL Mauer then, he certainly wasn't hitting well when he came back. If Nuñez isn't in the lineup on Tuesday (or at least ready to come off the bench), my guess is that he will be on the DL retroactive to yesterday.
  18. I do give him credit for being *mostly candid about how the team has played. He's pretty optimistic about this year's team, and you can kind of tell from this interview in particular that he feels good about their chances to remain competitive for the balance of the season.
  19. Makes sense - they are waiting for the day when they remove one of the current starting pitchers from the rotation to add a guy to the 40-man (and I'm guessing call that player up to the 25-man at the same time).
  20. Ugh. This hits really hard. Tony Gwynn was my favorite non-Twins player. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/06/tony-gwynn-passes-away.html
  21. It hopefully works better for you than for me (page is not displying correctly on my work browser) - The most recent show, 6/15, should be up. http://www.ktwin.com/personalities/the-ron-gardenhire-show/pages/past-shows
  22. How is the hammy doing for Nuñez ? He sat out on Sunday, but I didn't watch or listen to the game, so I don't know if he's expected to be back soon or not. On the pre-game shows everyone said they were going to "wait and see" if he was ok.
  23. The context of that quote is that he's saying that making a 40-Man roster that A) has enough useful pieces that can help the major league team and protects the prospects that need more time in the minors but would otherwise be eligible for Rule V , etc. is not an easy task. The tone of his comments were complimentary to the Front Office folks, and made the case that he's not pulling strings behind the scenes, but I think no matter what he says or how he says it, there will be some debate about how much he has influenced the roster moves for the Twins over the years.
