  1. Yes of course the best pitchers are better. I am just saying there's little risk involved in signing a pitcher to a one-year deal or a minor league deal. If one those bounceback guys want to re-establish value in Minnesota, that would probably work out well for both parties. I think these are two separate issues. 1) The Twins should absolutely make every effort to add a front of the rotation starting pitcher, either through free agency or trade. 2) The Twins should also keep their eyes open for players that can benefit the team in a low cost, low risk, high upside deal. I think the Twins need to address both of those issues. Oh and Left Field. And Center Field. and the Bullpen.
  2. The reunion tour guys weren't really in the same league as, say, Billingsley or Masterson. They were all several years past 30, whereas the guys that are named as possible bounceback candidates are still 30 or younger. The odds are better that one of them will improve. No certainty, of course, just a better set of odds. I'll also say that having a starting pitcher go on a hot streak is more likely to get you wins during those hot streaks than a position player with a hot bat. Unless he's hitting homers, a hot bat doesn't even mean that the team as a whole is scoring runs. If the Twins can pick up 5 - 10 wins in the first two months from one of these guys, what's the harm? I agree that the downside is how long a team sticks with a guy after the luck runs out. The thing is, I think the Twins have more pitching options to turn to than they had left fielders to turn to to replace Kubel.
  3. It's always nice to have depth in AAA - I think this move is good for both parties, though. The notion of prospects being blocked by MLB talent, I agree that it exists to some extent based on the specific player involved, but I think it's actually these rotation depth guys that are blocking Meyer and May (last year). I don't think having Pino and Johnson and Darnell is a bad thing, but they certainly were getting MLB innings that could have gone to Meyer and/or May last year. To me it is a sign that the Twins are comfortable with Meyer as the first starter called up in 2015 (assuming he doesn't win a spot in Spring Training).
  4. Also, it was interesting that Jose Oquendo, Dave Martinez, and Wally Backman seemingly were not on the Twins' radar at all. There's no way to know if they were or were not contacted, but those three have been in lots of other team's managerial searches recently.
  5. I don't think it's a mistake - if the rebound guy is better than 4 of the 5 starters in the rotation, that's a good thing. If he's not better than the pitchers they already have, the Twins can release the guy, or try to trade him to another team looking for a lottery ticket. Pelfrey I think is going to be given a chance to work out of the bullpen as well as getting a chance to start in Spring Training. Again, if he's somehow better now than the rest of the rotation candidates, why not use him? Berrios is close to being ready, but I think he's going to be in AA/AAA for the next season.
  6. I'm hoping the games in San Francisco are a bit closer than these first two were - They are tied for the series, but neither game was as nail-biting as the ALCS or ALDS games were. Hoping for extra innings in at least one of the next three, and I hope they have to play in KC again.
  7. http://img1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120521082419/meme/images/1/12/Table_Flip.jpg Ok - I'm done overreacting about pitchers getting offseason surgery, but I just needed to get that out. What was Melotakis' projected MLB debut date prior to the surgery? Getting the surgery right away might mean that it won't move all that much - maybe it would go from mid-season to a September call up in 2016? or early to mid 2017?
  8. The chances of Liriano coming back to the Twins as a Free Agent changed when Gardy was let go - did they go up or down? It will probably depend on who the new guy is. It's possible that the Texas Rangers of all teams might have an advantage now that their new Manager is in place. Banister was a bench coach for Pittsburgh, so maybe Liriano (and Volquez, too, for that matter) would be interested in following him to Arlington. I would say it's about as likely as Jon Lester coming to the Twins if they hire Sox bench coach Lovullo, but ya never know! Billingsley, Floyd, Masterson are all interesting to go after - Fans might not have a taste for injured veterans after the last couple years of Pelfrey, but the nice thing is that the injured guy doesn't "block" anyone, and if it turns out that they are healthy, then the team gets a really nice addition to the rotation. The hope is that you get a bounceback season like Scott Kazmir (or, ahem, Phil Hughes), and not one of the laundry list of guys that have tried to recover from an injury and just don't have it anymore. Signing Rich Harden didn't hurt the Twins at all, and there was potential for a big gain.
  9. Glynn is out of the running, according to this : http://www.democratandchronicle.com/story/extra-bases/2014/10/22/red-wings-glynn-out-of-running-for-twins-manager-job/17713969/
  10. If he was a Twin he'd be watching the game from home on the couch - ZING. Rough game 1 for the Royals, at least there was a Willingham sighting.
  11. Because he's still on the 25 Man Roster? Parmelee should be DFA'd or traded (if that's even possible given his limited value)
  12. I do recall that Bonfacio had a really fast start in April and some folks on TD were losing their minds over the Twins passing on him. Granted, MN had Hicks in Center with no backup and had dumped Alex Presley in favor of Jason Bartlett... His line of .337/.385/.406 and 10 SB in March/April was fueled by a BABip of .415
  13. If the Twins didn't already have Danny Santana and the two Eduardos, I would say go for it - he would have seemed like a smart pick up in 2014 for the Twins - they didn't have Nuñez yet, and they didn't know what they had in Escobar or Santana. I think he'd be better to have on the team than Nuñez, but only because his OF defense is marginally better. I don't think he brings more to the table than the guys already on the roster, namely Danny Santana.
  14. I wonder if FOX wishes that last night's game was on network television . . . did anyone on the board watch it? I don't have FS1, and I wasn't going to a bar to watch the Cardinals and Giants...
  15. That's an interesting angle - that Terry Ryan is interviewing as many candidates as he can to get some scouting on the other organizations' feeling about how the Twins do business. I'm sure that's part of it - at least, that's an added benefit to casting a wide net and doing the diligence to find the right candidate.
  16. Hicks recorded his first 2014 Venezuelan League hit , going 1-3 yesterday. Box Score
  17. I think Defensively Plouffe was most improved, offensively Escobar saw the larger jump in production.
  18. Nice - I agree, I think Plouffe got a bit snubbed, though I would say that Escobar is a great choice for most improved.
  19. Finally got that Left handed Starting Pitcher the Twins were after, I see. Too bad the AL has the DH now, I hear that guy has some pop in his bat.
  20. Maybe, maybe not - I'm guessing that Friedman will want different prospects than Ned Colletti's staff would have asked for, but I don't think Friedman's arrival means that those three big contract veterans will now become unreasonably more expensive in terms of prospects to trade. Friedman may be even more eager to move those guys than Colletti was.
  21. Parmelee has a reverse platoon split - he actually hit lefties better than righties in 2014, if that's meaningful... Nelson Cruz will be extended a Qualifying Offer by Baltimore, which he will decline, making him a free agent again. He will be the biggest RH bat on the market. Yasmany Tomas is RH, too - the Twins were rumored to be trying to meet with him again. Not likely, but there's been more than the usual amount of smoke regarding this particular Cuban defector. But yes, if defense is your thing... Bourjos would be the guy...
  22. When was the last time Delmon missed the playoffs? EDIT: I looked it up - he's been on a playoff team every year since 2009. His first year with MN was the last time Delmon Young did not appear in the playoffs! Crazy. He's a lucky dude.
  23. I think ultimately that without the bitter, the sweet is not as sweet. I think baseball in June/July is a different game than baseball in October, and that's ok. I like the lazy summer games where you can lean back in your chair and spend time with a buddy; catch up over a cold beer or two, talk about the team and which guys are bums, get a little sunburn . . . and every once and awhile, the lazy summer pastime gets tense - maybe a pitcher is throwing a gem, or it's a tie game late. Then it's time to move to the edge of your seat and the conversation falls away because each pitch is bringing your team closer to October baseball (even if it will have to 'wait til next year').
  24. To me, the ideal configuration looks like this: LF: FA/trade acquisition CF: FA/trade acquisition 4th and 5th Outfielder: Schafer and Hicks SS: Danny Santana UTIL: Eduardo Escobar DFA'd, traded, released: Nuñez and Parmelee. I think Parmelee is fine, but the Twins can find someone else to surpass his production and be the starter ahead of Hicks and Schafer.
  25. The Hammer was a 17th round pick in 2000 , struggled to get a foothold (and a regular position) with a major league team, but still ended up with nearly 200 career homers. John Sickels provides a nice write up of the prospect that was Josh Willingham: http://www.minorleagueball.com/2014/10/13/6894429/17th-round-195-homers-the-career-of-josh-willingham-prospect-retrospective
