  1. Im fine with Myers since he's had 3 200+IP yrs with 3 more over 190 as long as its not the 'big' move. Brett would be fine as a 4/5 type starter (I believe Diamond is a 3/4 tops). Still need a minimum of 2 more starters then....could get by with Liam Hendriks as a 5 guy. This is the prototypical Terry Ryan move.....1yr with low money for a guy to establish himself. Not taking much of a chance.
  2. Twins havent spent on a FA pitcher as good as Guthrie in 2 decades.....Sid Ponson still upright?
  3. Butera, Field easily moved. Swarzak isn't arb eligible so they'll definitely keep him. He would also be lost. Oliveros will be out for all of 2013, but that makes him an easy pick in the Rule 5 because the other team can keep him all next year on their DL and then bring him back the following year. Guerra could possibly sneak through. Mastroianni maybe could sneak through, but he's an ideal 4th OF, so I'd keep him. Herrmann would be claimed by a bunch of teams. Oliveros would be the 1st player the twins would remove if they sign someone. If he's out most of 2013, then the rule five rules would apply in 2014 as well. If you can hold out on Oliveras till the season starts, he immediately goes to 60 day DL. Butera, Guerra, Field, Swarzak, Burnett could be possibilites IMO. No shot on Benson, Mastro, Hermann.
  4. No need to panic yet as Joe Blanton is still available. When Scot Baker @ 5m & Jeremy Guthrie @ 8 are too pricey....doesnt bode eell
  5. I agree 100%. Get Angel Morales out of Ft Myers & see if there is anything there. I personally havent seen anything but several players have significantly jumped their numers in New Brit over Florida. Problem is.....Terry Ryan has strongly hinted that Oswaldo Arcia is gonna start the year in New Brit & the organization hasnt said yet that Joe Benson will be in ROC (reason I think he will be dealt). ROC has Bigley, Dinkelman, Ramirez, Hermann on occasion & Hicks in the AAA outfield WITHOUT Benson/Arcia
  6. opinion or have you heard talk?
  7. No need to sign him to minor league deal as their is NO way he wouldnt make the opening day roster & MN wont fill up their 40 man anyways. With Deolis Guerra, their is gonna be a guy DFA'd in spring training anyways to clear a spot if/when they do. I thought last summer that they would resign Pav, so till he signs somewhere else....I think he's in teams plans
  8. arrrrrgggggghhhhhh to all that have been mentioned. Not cause they are absurd but since they are inevitable to be Twins
  9. a relatively high draft pick (5th round) who's spent 2 yrs in Low A and then becoming the AFL MVP.....if MN has any player who is ready to at least attempt to skip High A, its Roberts who will be 24 already next season....but they wont & after the inevitable struggles next yr, Twins still wont know what they have in Roberts
  10. Absolutely.....the alternative is Pedro Florimon, a guy 31 other teams passed on within the past year. Stephen Drew is a legit major leaguer and will be the best Twins SS since Greg Gagne.
  11. Butera should back up Herrmann in Rochester. Another ridiculous signing (similar to signing Roof's kid last season) that makes no sense at all, unless the Twins are getting rid of Butera. And then, there are better in house options.. I 100% agree with Seth's assesment. There is no shot that Drew starts in minors.....he's' arbitrtion eligible also & will get about 800K (wont pay that to a AAA guy if they dont have too).
  12. Didnt include Kyle as he hasnt been resigned yet....technically not part of team yet. I would think BJ earned a spot in AAA to see where he stands.....but who's spot does he take?? See what organization thinks of him when 40 man roster is filled in Nov 22 (with the Rule V eligible guys). If you're thinking ANY of these guys start in majors (Im already saying Hendriks IS), this is gonna be one AWFUL offseason for TR/Twins.
  13. Disagree with the wording.....Deduno didnt pay off. Team was so bad that they kept having to go to minors & he got a huge opportunity that he didnt do enough with to even warrant a 40 man spot. He basically proved why he's not a major league pitcher. Ummm... OK, I guess... I guess if a minor league free agent signing makes 15 or so starts for the big league club, I would consider that a pretty strong minor league signing. They may have been a 'good' signing if MN wasnt the worst team in the AL. .450-.500 record, maybe I agree with that but they didnt. PJ Walters made 12 starts for Twins also....that definately wasnt a successful signing, just a sign of the horrible situation they put themselves in. MN knows how valuable PJ/Sam were by releasing em both (31 teams then passed on em for their 40 man) & resigned em for AAA depth. Casey Fien showed he's a major league reliever....that's a good signing, not those 2 retreads.....again IMO.
  14. When signing the plethora of minor league FA's....I like looking at the depth (or lack of ) at our levels. As of now....the starting pitching for the Red Wings Nick Blackburn Cole DeVries Pedro Hernandez Samuel DeDuno PJ Walters Sound pretty reasonable??? That's not even counting Liam Hendriks on the roster....reason I think he will be packaged in a deal this winter. Bullpen Kyle Gibson......TR has pretty much said Gibby will start the first couple months in the pen Esmeril Vazquez Caleb Thielbar Luis Perdomo Tim Wood Anthony Slama Deolis Guerra.....out of options, wont make the team. If they dont wanna keep him, just release him now. Bobby Lanigan Daniel Turpen DL to start yr....Lester Oliveras/Dan Sattler 14 active (w/o Liam) so 2 of these will be cut Again, not counting a Alex Burnett or Tyler Robertson possibility. This doesnt count AA starter BJ Hermsen, Shairon Martis who was resigned and spent plenty of time in AAA, Aaron Thompson who was also resigned, Logan Darnell & Steve Hirschfield as the New Brit starting 5
  15. Of course, this signing means that Drew Butera has sewn up a 25 man roster spot with MN
  16. Disagree with the wording.....Deduno didnt pay off. Team was so bad that they kept having to go to minors & he got a huge opportunity that he didnt do enough with to even warrant a 40 man spot. He basically proved why he's not a major league pitcher. No problem with signing Wood, but if he throws as hard as is said, he's never had a Krate of over 1 per inning. Says a lot to me. Fryer just replaces Rivera/Towles but with him & Hermann in AAA next year.....that means that Butera is already assured a spot on the Twins roster. Figures....both of these signings just shows how TR does not promote from within organization but treats AAA as just a collection of other teams has beens.
  17. good start to offseason.....between him & Kevin Gorg, it was hard to tell who knew less about baseball
  18. Arizona went from 65-97 in 2010 to divison winner with a 94-68 record in 2011 OAK went from 74-88 in 2011 to 94-68 & division winner Balt went from 69-93 in 2011 to 93-69 & wild card......NEVER happens
  19. I dont remember AJ bein a solid defensive C but who was the soft tossing AAA pitcher....not Bonser, as he threw low-mid 90s. No way to call that lucky as they immediately inserted Nathan as the closer. I would hope that if Wash is still interested in Denard Span, that we would look around Ross Detwiller
  20. I do like the Lombo idea----.298 career minor league average with a .780OPS with speed. I dont believe MN has any interest in Benson bein part of their future, so that wouldnt be a bad idea. I wouldnt mind sniffing around their other 2 guys Desmond (all star who was rumoured in last yrs Span deal) or Espinosa. Nats dont want Harper in CF, so how about something centered around Span/Benson/Hendriks for Lombo/Detwiller/minor leaguer
  21. You have your conservative approach....which is the Twins (minors are important & dont hurt your minor league teams to improve yourself....ok a lil tuff but). The other approach is that players are ONLY in the minors to get them ready to help out the MLB team. I didnt comlain too much last yr on Sano AS I compare him to Miguel Cabrera, who was called up in July of his 20th bday season (next yr for Sano). Miguel did a half year at High A/half at AA, so next year is where I am gonna be critical of MN on the promotions (of course IF Sano deserves it).
  22. Uggla actually had his best defensive year this season, so it could be an abberation or is he improving over age in the field. 10m for an all star type 2B like Weeks is very much in budget IMO. Ive never been a fan of Johnson, but he would be an improvement altho his defense wasnt any better than the first 2. Whether its these guys or someone else, this team is below average offensively & needs to drastically improve the middle infield hitting.
  23. I have been on record since Sept that I HATE our middle infield guys & if they start the 2013 season with someone out of the grouping of Florimon/Dozier/Carroll/Escobar as their starters, they will lose 90gms for the 3rd straight year & firings will be prevelant through the organization. I also know that many people argue that MN should spend all their available funds on pitching.....I am not one of those as you can find affordable pitching in trades (which is what MN will do) & not spend in FA. I have brought up Dan Uggla in a few different threads as his career worst 2012 season is better than any middle infielder in MN has had since the Chuck Knoblauch days. I would be all in on him even with his 3yr/39m remaining. Another name that was mentioned to me is Rickie Weeks of MIL. He's due 21m over next 2 yr with a tm option in 15. He also had a career worst yr in 12' but also would be the best 2B in 15yrs for this club with those numbers. He was also very career average in the 2nd half. His MLB worst UZR @ 2B worries me, but he was also positive in UZR the 3 previous yrs. In Weeks last 5 injury free yrs....he 66+ BBs in 4/5 & 167XBH in his last 3yrs (IMO over 50 is bench mark). He is a guy who you can buy low on, & get a huge return....and if he ONLY puts up last yrs offensive #s.....he's the best you've had in 15yrs at that position.
  24. Upton is only a RF so dealing him will have no impact on them finding a CF as they have Adam Eaton in CF with Gerrardo Parra possibly. There is no interest in Span by them BUT sniffing around Bauer is something they better be doin. Rumours are out that ARIZ isnt too fond of Bauer either....due mostly to his training methods/pitching ideals.
  25. I always thought Guthrie's bad W-L in Balt was due to bad luck, as his periperals were always solid. However, there are types of pitchers who will always pitch just good enough to lose. I dont think Guthrie is one, but I do think there is something to that & something to consider
