  1. I like Dobnak, look for him to pass Bailey in rotation. Other starter will only be needed for 5-6 starts until Pineda gets back. I am all for a nontraditional approach to the 5th starter, 3-4 inning opener, followed another 3-4 inning pitcher. Smeltzer and Thorpe usually looked good the first time through the order last year. Twins want to limit Graterol's IP. Seems like a good match. Could see one of Thorpe, Graterol, or Smeltzer eventually passing Bailey also. I don't have much confidence in Romero. Hope I am wrong about him.
  2. Great article, would not be surprised if Dobnak outperformed Bailey and pushes to be #3 starter.
  3. Would any of these options be better than Rooker, a RH bat that plays corner OF, if has a good spring training. Cheap and available,
  4. 5 starters were only Twins pitchers with over 70 IP last year. Will need to get creative for Graterol to get 100+ IP in bullpen this year. I like opener option, either Graterol as opener or paired to follow opener. Pitch every 5 games, limit to 3-4 IP/ 75-80 pitches. Does it make sense for 2 pitchers to pitch 3-4 innings every 5 days and get 110-120 IP for year or for 4 pitchers to get 50-60 IP for year using traditionally from bullpen?
  5. It seems to me AAA should be the final proving ground for prospects. But looks like most rosters made up of career minor leaguers and former MLB players. There are a few high prospects but not many. Is it to be prepared in case of a series of injuries at the same position, so not reliant on rookies. Don't want to start high prospects service time early if injuries occur? Seth's article "Looking ahead" lists 21 players that will be rule 5 eligible at the end of the year as either "locks, possibilities, or bubble" to be added to 40 man for Twins at end of year, I would think you would want to see them at the AAA level at some point this year to help make decisions at the end of the year. Also, use AAA to evaluate 14 players on 40 man that don't make 26 roster.
  6. Why have different rules fir NL and AL. Interleague play and WS awkward because visiting team not built for the other league's rules. When Twins played interleague team last year Cruz sat, one of their best hitters, so someone who took his first BP of the year before the game can hit.
  7. Starter? Big difference between pitching one inninng and 5-6 innings. Hopefully he remains a solid reliever in low leverage opportunities maybe progresses with more experience.
  8. RB likes to give his players plenty of rest, a 4th OF could play 100+ games a year. Could see Rooker filling that role since RH bat to rest corner LH bats. Larnach will not be factor this year unless killing it in MiLB, Kirilloff and Rooker should get opportunity. Rooker probably first since has AAA experince and RH bat. Lewis same situation as Larnach, no need to rush does not have to be on 40 man for 2 years. Can see eventual Buxton, Kepler, Rooker, Kiriloff, Sano, Larnach as OF/1B/DH options with Donaldson, Polanco, Arraez, Lewis as INF/DH options, with Garver, Jeffers, and Rorvedt at C/DH/1B. That is if all develop as hoped, Blankenhorn, Raley, Cave, Wade, Miranda, Baddoo and others may be a factor as well. Looks like Twins in good shape for position players the next few years. Pitching remains the biggest question.
  9. Great article Seth, it is a key year for many of the Twins prospects. But that is how a team has to do it, have multiple prospects competing for limited positions, not everyone will get there. There is always a lot of flux with pitching, so could see 4-6 spots open up for pitching prospects by next year. Position players could also see 4-6 spots open up, Cruz, Gonzolez, Adrianza, Cave, Astudillo, Avila, Wade are all players that may not be on 40 man next year.
  10. I believe OFs Diaz and Davis would have been ruleV eligable this year were traded for pitching last year. I noticed too how many OFs will be rule V eligible next year. And looking at previous prospect top 30 lists, how many have never had significant contributions at MLB level. Many players have more trade value as prospects than MLB players, Rosario. If Twins can parlay multiple prospects to get a 2-3 starter I am all for it.
  11. Still look for Twins to add one more SP. But don't see need to overspend or reach.I am fine with standing pat with position players, plenty of solid prospects on brink of mlb.
  12. Why help the Red Sox? Let them have to sit on that fat contract. Even at 40M for 3, no guarantee Price will be worth that.
  13. Kiriloff, think he gets an opportunity and has an Arraez like impact next year.
  14. Last year, Twins starting pitchers rarely made it past the sixth inning. Odorizzi and Pineda averaged around 5.5 innings per start. It would be great if the Twins had inning eating starters and pitched 200 innings a year, but Berrios had 200 and 3 others around 160 and Pineda 141 with suspension. Other than 5 starters, no pitcher pitched more than 70 innings. Pitching an opener 3 innings even just using them every 5th day would allow them to pitch 90-100 innings a year. Smeltzer/Thorpe would be good options. One of them with a right hander, the combo pitches the first 8 innings and have closer finish game. I like Smeltzer/Graterol pairing, finesse followed by power.
  15. As in most things in life moderation is the answer. The Twins have difficulty attracking high level free agents. But should not overreact and sign aging stars to ovepriced contracts that extend beyond the player's effectiveness. Keep signing midlevel FAs like Cruz, Gonzolez, Pineda, to shorter contracts. Look for Twins to add one midrotation pitcher by trade and take a chance on an end of rotation starter.
  16. Last year Twins starters rarely got past the 6th inning. Should they start using a multi inning opener more often. Bullpen used 3 innings most games, why not have an opener pitch the first 2-3 innings, then put in the "starter" for 5-6 innings.
