  1. If the Twins miss out on Jen-Ho Tseng, who else are they targeting? According to MLB trade rumors, he is close to signing with the Cubs. Jen-Ho Tseng, Cubs Close To Deal: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com
  2. I hope that in 2-3 years we won't have to spend big in free agency to fix our rotation. I wish they would have pursued Sanchez harder so there was a reliable veteran in the rotation when the younger wave of starters come up. Then when his five year deal is up, you could have Gibson, Meyer, or whoever emerges as our ace at the front of the rotation. I am not saying that Sanchez would have been the savior but he is better then the retreads we are so used to seeing year in and year out.
  3. IMO, Sanchez would have looked really nice at the front of that rotation.
  4. I would have to give my grade as a C- as well. TR has had some nice signing with Willingham, Doumit, Burton, Fein, and even KC. I will be the first to admit that I hated the KC signing and that he would be worthless. I stand corrected on that. My problem with his handling of the major league roster is that the rotation was always turned over and never upgraded. Guys like KC, Pelfrey, and Marquis should be complements to the rotation. If those guys were are fourth or fifth starter, I could live with that if they had quality at the top of the rotation. Right now, they don't have that. They are lacking a guy that can take the ball every fifth day and stop a three or four game losing streak and you have the confidence that they will end it. I guess my point is that if you are only planning on spending 4-8 million per year on a starter, they better expect the results that they have been receiving from Pelfrey, KC, and last year with Marquis. They will either need to develop some front of the rotation guys (Gibson, Meyer, Barrios, Stewart) or be willing to give a guy like Anibal Sanchez the type of contract he received. Unfortunately, I don't know if I would give a Sanchez like contract to anyone in this next years class.
  5. When I lived in Rapid City, I was able to get both FSN and whatever the Rockies played on. But there are a ton of SD Twins fans. They had eastern Montana and Wyoming up until the Rockies came into existance.
  6. As an SDSU alum, I really hope the best for him. You gotta love the underdog stories and root that they make it.
  7. It is still pretty impressive to sign 24 of your first 25 picks.
  8. I have only been to a few stadiums but for the ones I have been to I would rank them in this order. Kauffman Stadium Target Field Old Yankee Stadium Metrodome Anaheim Stadium (back when it was the Big A) Kauffman for me tops the list because it isn't too corporatized yet. I have walked up to the ticket booth an hour before the game and bought tickets in the first row on top of the Twins dugout and paid $30-$40 for them.
  9. Any word if there are or have been productive talks with Eades, Slegers, and DeMuth?
  10. Would Garza come back here? Vargas, Nolasco, and Lincecum maybe worth a look given their age. If we keep up the one year retread option, maybe Ervin Santana. Hopefully in a couple years we can look for a #5 starter rather than an ace.
  11. Hard to believe that Perkins is only 8 strikeouts behind the team leader. Correia has 48 and Perkins has 40.
  12. I do hope that they get Gibson's feet wet this year. I can't help but look at how the Royals are handling their system. A few years back we were hearing how stacked their farm system was. Now, pretty much all of the position players are up but some of the pitchers have hardly had a cup of coffee in KC. Where are they at? They are showing potential but still hanging around .500. What I worry about is the learning curve. It took Gordan to get going. Hosmer and Moustakas have both struggled. Escobar looks like a good shortstop but it took him a couple of years. Cain and Perez have the look of a potential star. I think it is time to give Parmelee as serious look to see if he can play and it is time to get Gibson's feet wet so he can get over the learning curve sooner than later.
  13. This is a very good article and Dick did a great job with his answers. I feel that I am a big baseball fan and I don't generally care for the advanced stats. I do most of them and what/how they are used. I generally don't care for them though and I am even a math guy. I do realize that these can be useful tools. However, I do know that those stats are only tools to show past events. Just because a guy has a tremendous slash line or his WAR is 2.0, that doesn't mean anything in the bottom of the 8th in a tie game. That is why it is a great game. If you want to dig into numbers and use the advanced stats, you can. If you are a person that likes the visual stats, by all means, use them. I would have to say I am with Winston and really don't care about stats at all, I would just rather sit down, crack a cold one, and enjoy.
  14. I think by the time the Twins draft at four that the best player available will also fill a need. I am assuming Appel, Grey, and Bryant are gone. I think they have to take Stewart. I understand the signability issues. I also think that the Shipley, Stanek, and Manaea are good but I am not sold on them being an ace or 2. I think they can have nice MLB careers but I think you have to take the risk and grab the ace and that would be Stewart. If he doesn't sign, we would likely be looking at 2 top 10 picks next year in a draft class that is considered to be deeper. To answer the question in general without regards to this years draft, in my opinion, you need to take the best player available. A smart FO could then turn any depth into trade chips. Obviously, a lot of factors come into play such as age, readiness, and overall ability. That is just my opinion.
  15. In my opinion, there are decent options via free agency. I think that if you are using FA to fill one rotation spot (maybe two at best or a bullpen spot) that you can maybe find an arm or two. I think this link is pretty telling of why the Twins have struggled both with their rotation and fielding major league players in general. Last time each AL team drafted an All-Star - SweetSpot Blog - ESPN 2002 was the last All-Star drafted by the Twins and it was Even Meek who was Pittsburgh's rep in 2010.
  16. With rumors like this and also rumors of the Twins going under slot, wouldn't teams need a lot of luck to have their guys fall to them in the second round? I am just trying to understand the process of going under slot. I know we don't know the teams draft boards but wouldn't they be taking a big gamble going under slot in hopes of having their guy fall? I know it worked out last year for Houston having McCullers fall. If I do remember, it was pretty well known that it would take a lot of money for him to sign. But also last year, it seemed like the talent level was pretty solid from in the 10-25 range. If the Twins or in this case the Astros go under slot, who would be the target? I really haven't heard any monetary demands or expectations. One other question, would the second round pick, if going under slot, be a college junior and/or HS kid who has some leverage by going back to school? Thanks for your responses on this. I am just trying to figure out the hows and whys.
  17. It would be a waste to promote Gibson at this time. I can live with him in the minors for another two weeks if it gets us a year of team control. Come June (2?), bring him up.
  18. That trade was brutal for the Twins. To make matters even worse, a week later Baltimore traded Eric Bedard for Adam Jones, George Sherrill, Chris Tillman, and another minor league pitcher.
  19. I would love for the Twins to take Bryant. If he goes 3 (assuming Appel and Grey go 1-2), I really like Kohl Stewart. Manaea scares me a little bit but if the Twins end up with Manaea, I wouldn't be too disappointed.
  20. I'm not a doctor but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
  21. Any word on what happened in the 8th inning in the Rochester game? I see both managers and Rochester's hitting coach were ejected.
  22. Wilken Ramirez gets the start tonight in RF.
  23. Looks like it is a late arriving crowd today. Wonder what the actual attendance is?
  24. I was listening to the game and when Wilken Ramirez came up and swung at the first pitch both Gladden and Provus said that was OK. In a roundabout way, they said that he was called on to hit and they didn't mind the aggressive approach. I don't mind it either. He was able to work the count after falling down 0-2.
