Minnesota Twins Still Looking to Reinforce Bullpen
Greglw3 replied to Matthew Lenz's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I'm with you, Robbie Ray is my #1 choice for sure! If he likes it here, they could even extend him. -
The answer is a resounding Yes to your question. To get a top-of-the-reliever-market reliever with a 2.35 ERA and ~1.00 WHIP is exactly what the Twins need to be doing as a start to the buying that will give this team a chance to be potentially a playoff threat. I’d try for Robbie Ray next and also Emerson Hancock. Tyler Tolbert, Alex Call, and 2 more solid relievers. Kevin Gausman would be next in line.

2 hits, was that yesterday? Looking at the silver lining. I think once he settles in, he’ll be, in total, a vast improvement over Kreidler, especially offensively with power and steals.

It's not worth arguing about. I believe that Zoll and Shelton are vastly superior to Falvey and Baldelli. You can say "You’re wrong, all you want" but I’ve watched how the franchise has been run since Falvey and Baldelli left and it’s light years better. And I have a factual correction for you! The 2025 Twins were 51-59 after 110 games, not the same as this year and they had vastly more bullpen talent. Big difference between .500 with a very improvable bullpen, rotation and lineup vs lefties than 8 games below .500 with a peak bullpen.

I noticed that too! And wondered if it meant what I thought it might mean. I’d like to see definitely Culpepper up at SS after trade deadline and Jenkins in the OF if they move Larnach

I'm implying that Falvey was the De Facto GM that presided over the losing franchise from 2020-2025 and that was probably why Thad Levine left. We see things differently. You think the front office is essentially the same and I feel that getting rid of Falvey and restructuring to one layer and putting a more talented person in charge has radically transformed it. We will need to agree to disagree, hope Zoll’s moves, callups, whatever lead to the playoffs and cheer for the Minnesota Twins today!

The front office was Derek Falvey when Thad Levine was here and it was Derek Falvey after Levine left and Zoll took on the ceremonial position of Twins GM. Everybody knew that Falvey was calling the shots. Until Falvey left. That was liberation day and the restructuring, so Zoll has all the power, was brilliant. A GM should be able to have free rein to build out his vision. I’m very impressed with Zoll. The FO is hugely improved and the results show it. The front office is new because they totally restructured it to where, in my opinion, someone far more capable than Falvey has control of both roles, so that the GM is not having the Pres of BB Operations looking over his shoulder and able to pull rank at any time. You are either super cynical or haven’t been paying attention. What failed policies have turned a 70-92 team into a 55-55 team with virtually the same roster, except not near as much bullpen talent? The FO made a massive sweep of the organization, installing Derek Shelton, who has been terrific in myriad ways and Grady Sizemore plus Latroy Hawkins. I’ve see far more, not just competence, but inspired culture setting and far better field managing from Shelty than R.B. A massive difference. Basically, everything has changed and the moves that Zoll has made have been far better than Falvey in getting Yoendrys Gomez, Tommy Nance, Jack Anderson and now A.J. Minter, he of the 2.35 ERA and 1 WHIP for 2 out-of-the-top-30 prospects. The new culture and better than competence is what has allowed this team to be 55-55, even with a bullpen that is horrid on paper. Shelton has managed it superbly, getting the most out of it anyone could. Even the switch to Tom Pohlad has been a good move.

Jenkins is an on base machine with 31 walks in 181 at bats, currently at .383 on base, and 10/12 stolen bases. His .271 average is not eye popping but still well above major league average. And, in theory, he is just going to keep getting better at only 21 years old. I think with the trade deadline around the corner, they have something else up their sleeve, it may be Rodriguez coming up instead of Jenkins, it may be acquiring an MLB cf, maybe Larnach’s going to be traded with Jenkins coming up then - it could be a lot of things...the new FO has built up a good runway of trust with me, so we’ll see, although I had the same first reaction, What? Why not Jenkins? But let’s see.

Hip Sends Byron Buxton Back To Twins' Injured List
Greglw3 replied to Steve Drumwright's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Why did they not call up Jenkins, such an obvious move? -
I’m all in on him. Giving up a Keaschall or Lewis would be tough but it’s the old baseball expression - you have to give up something to get something. I’d prefer to give up Larnach and slide Walker Jenkins in. Would they be interested in E-Rod? We’d still have Jenkins and Mendez and Roden.

Peripherals? The guy has a winning record with a 3.16 ERA and a 1.006 WHIP. He’s having a dominating season and he’s in his athletic prime. That’s all I need to know.

Matthew! That was a brilliant piece of writing that captured the essence of the pure euphoria of that moment, when the game was won, switching this Twins fan’s emotions from near despondency to pure joy!!! And I suspect the same extreme emotional swing for a huge chunk of "die hard" and long-time Twins fans. Watching Lewis and Keaschall and that smaller group celebrate just past 3rd base captured the pure grandeur of the moment! As a big time Twins fan since a little boy in 1964 at Tinker field in Orlando after a spring training Twins pounding of (ironically my birth state) Reds, it was one of the purely sweetest moments of these 6 decades! I love what has transpired since Shelton, Zoll, Sizemore, Hawkins and yes, Tom Pohlad have taken over. The icing on the cake is Jenkins and Culpepper there for the adding in St. Paul. Again, great writing! It reminded me of the writing of Roger Angell, in his all time classic baseball book, Five Seasons. The book that forever ingrained the meaning and love of the word 'penultimate' in my consciousness!

No to making a "continuation of 2025 selloff" type trade, to get maybe prospects, for one of the best hitters in the Twins lineup. And who says that Jeffers wouldn’t sign a 3 year extension? That’s what the Twins should do.

One superior player for 2 below average major leaguers. Jeremy Zoll would never do that, especially when we have 2 SS prospects much better than Volpe knocking on the major league door. Hard pass!

Yes, Lambert is having a good year, better than Joe Ryan is arguable. Also, at age 29, this is Lambert’s first and only remotely respectable season in his career. The Astros have a burning need for a left handed hitting outfielder. Whoever the best starter is that Larnach could being back, I’d go for it as long as it’s a solid #3 starter and bring up Walker Jenkins to take Larnach’s place.
-
My question is where has this Alex Speir been for almost a year. If that was the offer, it would have been reported long before now. There’s not one other collaborating report of that offer for the last year. The trade that was wrongly reported on ESPN involved neither of those guys. Besides, we need to keep Joe Ryan. We made a great trade for him and you win with pitching. Before his tired arm performance he was a Cy Young candidate. You build around players like that, give them an extension if at all possible. Otherwise you’ll have a franchise like the Montreal Expos used to have, constantly churning out great prospects, having a bright future, then always letting them walk. One reason why there is no Montreal Expos anymore. Build around Joe Ryan, Taj Bradley, Mick Abel, Connor Prielipp and Kendry Rojas. Try to engineer a trade for Emerson Hancock of the M’s and trade Larnach to Houston for Peter Lambert and call up Walker Jenkins to take Larnach’s spot. Get Culpepper up and start him for the rest of the season at SS. And extend Jeffers. Tom Pohlad "Go Big or go home". Put up or shut up!

Would the Twins Be Better Off Trading Royce Lewis?
Greglw3 replied to Sam Caulder's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Ortiz was neutered by a knee injury that limited him to left field hitting and "only" 20 home runs. Before that, Ivividly remember him hitting for average and power to the point that I planned to take him #1 in my Strat-O-Matic league draft. So, because of those vivid memories, I don’t think Tom Kelly had anything to do with it. I will agree that it was a colossally dumb move for Terry Ryan to release him. The biggest mistake ever made was trading a 7 time batting champion who won his batting titles by an average of 30 points (Honus Wagner averaged a 15 point batting title win). Who would trade a guy that just hit .350, .359, .364 and .388 in a 5 year period? And got back nothing of any lasting value at all. Brutal. -
Sean Johnson....The Falvey era was a failed era where after 2019, the organization had a losing record and was poorly run. That’s why they cleaned house.

Would the Twins Be Better Off Trading Royce Lewis?
Greglw3 replied to Sam Caulder's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Definitely never as bad as move as trading Rod Carew for nothing of lasting value or trading Johann Santana for virtually nothing or literally getting nothing for a clearly talented slugger who only slumped to 20 HR because of a knee issue. Carew was the dumbest, then Ortiz, then Santana. Would Lewis ever be in that conversation? Who knows? For sure never with the Carew giveaway. Doubtful with the Ortiz giveaway. Maybe with the Santana disaster. -
I think Falvey was the real problem and ultimately the real GM over Thad Levine and Jeremy Zoll. The whole organization is functioning better since they cleaned house and handed the reigns to Shelton, Zoll, Sizemore, Latroy Hawkins. That is obvious in a thousand ways to me - Shelton far batter manager and culture setter than Baldelli and Zoll much better than Falvey. Let’s give Zoll credit for Yoendrys Gómez, Tommy Nance and Jack Anderson. They have helped. Anderson and Nance were huge in a super critical game yesterday. Zoll went and got both.

I hope you’re right, they really need him. I’d much rather him take an approach like Keaschall. I had seen improvement but there’s been a decided dip recently. I’m a Twins fan, first and foremost, so I want all their players to do well.
