Clearly someone not a fan of the Turtle. You diminish his ability far too much. Don't know what else to say.

I'm not totally buying what mlb says. I rather agree with what Kaat used to do...the pitcher is the QB on these plays. He calls who takes it and in Kaat's case he used to push anyone else out of the way. Doesn't look like Duffey did that so instincts took over. Its easy to sit an watch a monitor and a replay over an over and say...this is how it should have been done. It was an unfortunate accident and I'm sure everyone is very bummed about it.

I agree about Astudillo, And I also hope that Adrianza can go. If he's healthy enough, he will contribute. Another reason why the W-L 'stat' is kinda useless. Twins used 8 pitchers today. The least effective was Duffey. He blew the save...gave up a two run HR to tie the game....but he got the 'W' because Cruz homered immediately after Duffey's inning was over. Crazy huh! However those runs were the first he gave up in many many weeks...so its OK.

I didn't see Arraez walk off with help. I saw him put on a cart and wheeled off. Isn't that what happened?

I hate it when I am right about bad things. I said in the game thread that the Yanks would probably hit 6 and darn it all, they did. Its obscene . Of course the way we were hitting them when everyone was healthy probably was too. What concerns me though is their lineup. We saw it all season...we couldn't stop them. I wouldn't be surprised to see double digit scores each game...unless miraculously our pitching was able to stop them. Our guys say, bring them on...which is what they are supposed to say. But to not be afraid of that hitting machine would be unwise. But would I rather face the pitching machine known as Houston? Geez....what choices! Well, thats why they play the games.

Front Page: Series Preview: One More Time
insagt1 replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
What to play for? start with 100 wins. Then the HR title from the hated Yankees. Good tune up appearances from pitchers who will be key in the ALDS. Not ending the year on a losing streak. (never fun, no matter what the circumstances) A chance for a record for road wins. You just don't want to 'throw away' these games. They sure didn't yesterday and I don't expect them to this weekend. -
interesting to note that while everyone feel the 'juiced' ball is the 'culprit' for all the HR's this year, no one hitter had over the top numbers such as we saw in the 'steroid era'. One has 50 so far...nobody will hit 60 or 70...in fact there haven't been that many who have 40+...given the large numbers overall. Seems like more hitters are going deep more often...but no one is pushing the individual single season records

Front Page: 2019 Minnesota Twins Minor League All-Stars
insagt1 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
From Rochester: Raley and Rooker were having great seasons and both of them got seriously hurt. Raley was done before June and Rooker missed the last month. When Wynston Sawyer went down, they called on Tomas Telis and that guy was arguably the Wings best hitter . Gordon was having a breakout AAA season when he fouled a ball off his ankle. I watched as he tried to shake it off...finally walking to first base...and then buckling and not being able to make it back to the dugout without help. I knew then, it was curtains for him We've probably beaten the subject of Jaylin Davis to death...but he was Mr Excitement for 41 glorious games. He will be missed. Wiel was an extra-base machine. He had two flaws...he struck out too much and he had a nervous habit of grabbing himself before every pitch. When you watch every game, this became somewhat of an embarrassment., Hopefully next year he can keep both hands on his....bat.... Wings had some awful pitchers...real awful...but also a few good ones and the Twins now have them. For those who are frustrated with Romero...trust me, he was one of the worst to suit up. And he had company. Twins ended up releasing more pitchers this season than any other I can remember since they became our parent. The farm overall looks pretty solid. -
There weren't too many 'experts' that picked the Twins over Cleveland before the season started. Meanwhile. Detroit could still lose 115 and tie the Orioles of 2018 for 4th most losses in modern MLB history. Mets lost 120.; Tigers lost 119 (and should have lost more...thank you Twins.....; Philly A's lost 117 many years ago; and then the O;s lost 115 last year. So Tigers could get in there twice! If O's lose 110, I don't recall any team ever losing this many games in back to back seasons (115 and 110). Twins could still equal their most wins but it would take a sweep and that realistically won't happen. But it might! Hey why not!

Front Page: A Stab at the Twins Postseason Roster 2.0
insagt1 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't think LaMarre or Torreyes is eligible for post season. don;t you have to be on the 25 man roster on Sept 1? At least thats the way it has been for decades? If I'm wroing correct me. If injuries get us under that limit, then are they OK to add? Astudillo will be on the roster. No way you keep a guy like that off. His value comes when you see what he did last night. We had no runs and we needed a guy who would put the bat on the ball. We have Sano, who is a threat to go deep every AB..but he also can 'k' in that situation... wasting an out. The Turtle is our best weapon off the bench and can play almost anywhere. I believe he is a ton more valuable than Castro, but I know I'll get showered with manure for taking that position. Thats OK. We will see Wlllians in the ALDS. -
Making light of this is also sort of 'silly'. Saying that the Twins erred in pitching him right away as being the reason for his season ending is a real stretch, IMO. Asking for a prospect back is equally as unrealistic. End of the day, it has turned out to be a bad trade...and they do happen. Twins received nothing, at least not this year. Somehow, internally a few of the guys really stepped up (Littell, May, Duffey). And Romo while being an adventure out there has not been 'awful'. I agree with the above post. Everyone is doing their job, even if nothing comes of it. I am from Rochester, so naturally I and a few 1000 others were very unhappy losing Davis. And it was compounded by Dyson ending up being worthless this season. But thats the way it goes sometimes. Time to concentrate on what we do have and how we are going to get past round one (assuming we get there of course!)

This is why I don't bet on anything! My 'gut' tells me that right now we aren't in the same league as Houston and the Yankees always find ways to break our hearts. Worse...if half our lineup is injured, or barely recovered, that won't help the cause. And then of course, our very tentative pitching staff.. In a short series we could be undone very quickly. So a sweep (against us) is pretty possible, unfortunately. However....upsets do happen. Can the Twins pull one? Always possible, but improbable. As a fan, I want them to be the Cinderella Team in 2019, but I think we have too many holes. Another reason why I really resent what Pineda did. Just no excuse for that. None. Twins have only lost 3 straight once...4 straight once. And they will be on the road, where somehow they seem to be at their best as their MLB best road record indicates. Beating the Yankees for me would be like the Bills beating Tom Brady. Improbable but ah so sweet if it happens. Finally I am aware that we did OK against Houston this year...but we haven't played them in quite awhile and it was when our lineup was at pretty much full strength. So those results are kind of meaningless to me. Still, thats why they play the games. First things first...clinch the division!

Yankees or Houston...like choosing between the firing squad and lethel injection! Houston's pitching is matchless. Yankees hitting is scary especially against us. Either team is probably going to be odds on to sweep us. So who would give us the best shot? Forgetting history, it would be NY. We might be able to outslug them 16-15. Houston has 3 starters that could shut us down quickly and they aren't too shabby on offense either. Starting on the road for us is a huge advantage, crazy as that seems. Twins have played miserably against the Yankees for a pretty long time, but maybe, if they get healthy, you never know. I'd take my chances with them.

With Buxton's future always up in the air, Davis most certainly did figure into the Twins future, particularly the way his second half went. while he didn't do anything with his September call-up, thats no big deal. The guy was in AA half the year and wouldn't have come to AAA had it not been for injuries. He was slated to go back to AA, but then he started hitting (in much the same way Arraez did) making it impossible to send him back down. The kid is a huge talent. Giants thought so too. I watched him play for 41 games, mostly with mouth wide open in awe. We all felt he was going to be a good insurance policy against Buxton. (we also mused that the Twins have a history of letting good CF'ers go!) Shenanigans with the Giants? No one will ever know. I have felt from the start that he was damaged goods, whether the Giants knew or not. The player knew. You don't pitch as poorly as he did when he got here if there wasn't something wrong. And if he looked like that while in SF, Twins wouldn't ever have given him a sniff. The way he pitched here was indicative of someone who had something wrong...and it didn't 'just' happen when he donned our jersey.

Nice to see Astudillo contribute with a game changing hit. But these injuries are getting nuts. Seems like most of them revolve around our guys just swinging the bat for some crazy reason. Anyway we can't have 5 and 6 of our regulars unable to play come playoff time. Could clinch tonite, but Cleveland isn't going away, so I suspect best we can hope for is to reduce the magic number to 1. Anyone think Gibson's 2 innings earned him a roster spot?

Front Page: Series Preview: Dining in the Doldrums
insagt1 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Tigers pitcher is 3-15. Think maybe we should be able to win this game? Once a team reaches 110 losses (Kitties are 1 away) they enter the abysmal pit of baseballs historically worst teams ever.. The O's will get there again this year after 115 losses last year. while it may be easy to take these 3 games lightly, there is absolutely no reason for the Twins to do so. They want to clinch the division...they want to make sure their key players are healthy..they want to get their pitching set up. No dogging it for the next 3 games. As bad as Detroit is, it is vital that the pitchers come to play. We saw how frustrating the KC series was, pitching-wise. We cringed as the 9th inning unfolded Sunday. I'd like to see the front runners (the 12 that will compose the post season roster) all step up and bring their 'A' game. there really is no reason to toss the others into the mix, unless games are way out of control....either way. IMO -
I sawa virtually every Red Wing game. We too were surprised they would send Dobnak down after a great outing...but apparently they wanted to give the starters ahead of him the chance to make their case....guys like Chase DeJong...who was so bad even the batdog covered his eyes. Rochesters overall pitching staff was so horrible this year, everyone seemed to be auditioning. As soon as someone put together a couple decent outings....up they went. Twins now have the best we had...and also a few of the worst too (Hildenberger, Romero) Dobnak is a great story. I hope they use him and he is successful. For the Twins to beat NY, they will have to win a football-like game. Twins success against NY is like the Buffalo Bills chances against the Patriots. Perhaps one day though........

one week to go to earn spots. I think I might favor Thorpe over Perez...only because lately Perez can't even pitch 2 or 3 effective innings. I don't think Thorpe could do worse. If Twins carry 13 bats, it will be interesting to see who is healthy enough to fill out the roster.

All of this just re-emphasizes just how much Pineda's bonehead move has cost the team. If he were still available the Twins starters would look totally different. Its really hard not to have real bad feelings about Pineda. Also somewhat surprised how many appear to feel Berrios goes in game one. Lately what I have been hearing more and more is Odorizzi gets game one (especially after Berrios' terrible outing last time) But who knows. In any event I can't see Odorizzi pitching Sunday. Dobnak as a possible starter, somewhere, seems pretty reasonable, given our limited options. I don't think Harper deserves a spot. Lots to think about.

My 'eyes' would say, if I dropped in from outer space and watched this past series...and saw the guys the Royals have, I would not think of them as a 100 loss team. they just seem better than that...at least against us...we never seem to be able to just 'blow them away'. (is that a function of them or us!!!) (I think Garver and Sano combine for 65 HR's, right?) Do I think Tigers are as bad a s 109 losses? Indeed, And I hope the Twins have no problems adding to that total.

I can't imagine any scenario that has Odorizzi making his start on Sunday....except the Twins not making post season. He has to be our game one starter...or game two...and neither will happen if he pitches on Sunday. I'd give him a start on Wednesday or Thursday. But never Sunday (unless also that game is needed to clinch the division) In reviewing the plusses and minuses of the week, don't forgot Castro's terrible AB's. If Garver is hurt and both Castro and Astudillo both slumping..this would be the first time all season the Twins would not have offense from behind the plate.- 38 replies

I think Smeltzer should also be considered as a possible starter. He can pitch more than 2 or 3 innings and right now looks to be more effective than Gib, Perez, and a few of the bullpen pitchers, who are summarily playing themselves off the team. Milwaukee was not a total failure with their bullpen usage in the playoffs last year. Might be our only hope. Was not at all surprised by Romero's awful outing...he has been awful all year with zero command of whatever stuff he allegedly has. but Romo did surprise me with his lack of control. Will Twins hold Kepler out all week? Has Wade displaced Cave? Will Twins bring 12 or 13 pitchers to round one (assuming they get there) Will they leave Perez and/or Gibson off the roster for round one? Does Astudillo get a slot? Are we very pleased at how Marwin jumped back into play demonstrating his value to the team? Is Adrianza done? Anyone concerned with Rocco's use of his bullpen? Can Twins not choke against the 109 loss Tigers? Are the 100 loss Royals so much better than their record? MLB now has 4 teams with 100+ losses and 3 with 100+ wins. If Twins manage to win 4 more, will this be the first time MLB has had 4 100+ winners and losers in one season?

If someone had said that with Berrios and Rogers in the game, the Twins would lose by 7, I wouldn't have believed it. The 9th inning was tough to watch. 'Hindenberg' was a mess and that should be the end of this season for him. Like Romero, this has been a wasted year. Rosario showed lack of plate discipline and hustle again last night. On such an ugly finish, we still lopped off one more game from the magic number. Still, in preparing for post season, winning is more important in the big picture. Win today and we take 3 of 4, which is OK.
