Article: Twins Daily Roundtable: Romero's Innings
Dantes929 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I would hope the coaches and the pitchers themselves are also in tune with the effort it takes to achieve those stats. Effort instead of mechanics should be monitored by observation. When guys start getting tired smoothness leaves and is replaced by effort.- 44 replies

Article: Twins Daily Roundtable: Romero's Innings
Dantes929 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
As much as I have read, science does not support or refute innings limits. I truly believe that an injury is just as or more likely in ST than it is in inning 156. I don't know what kind of throwing program pitchers are on pre ST but it feels like they accelerate from throwing 30 pitches to 100 pretty rapidly. Throwing over 30 pitches in an inning seems like it would have more detrimental effect than innings or overall pitches. One article posited that what pitchers do between innings is very important also. We have all seen Gibson on tv doing all sorts of stretches and exercises to stay loose but I don't see the others do it much. I just don't see how shutting someone down for 5 months and then starting them over on building them up over the next 7 months and then repeating is a way to build up innings over a career. I am very much in the camp of watch for fatigue evidenced by smoothness of delivery and velocity. Some pitchers are going to get hurt no matter what and some have been babied their whole life and probably left countless innings wasted in the tank. Blyleven, Ryan and Clemens on pitch or innings limits would have eliminated thousands of innings of HOF production.- 44 replies

Article: Don't Give Up On These Twins Quite Yet
Dantes929 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Its not the 6 games back that is so daunting. There may not be hundreds of teams that have come back from as big or bigger deficits but definitely multiple dozens and I can think of 4 of those seasons for the Twins alone. 3 of them happen to represent some of the best races in baseball history. Forget about the odds and the record they have to have from here on out. One thing I have learned from 6 decades of watching baseball is that the view now and the view 10 days from now can be very different. Sano and Dozier get hot and the breaks fall our way and maybe we win 8 of 10 with Mauer, Buxton and Polanco near ready to rejoin the team. Of course it can go the other way as well especially since we don't have some of our best players and a couple of the other of our best players just aren't playing well and we could lose 8 of 10 just as easily. For now though? Give up on my team when they are out 6 games? I wouldn't even do that in August.- 54 replies

Article: Week in Review: Status Quo
Dantes929 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
"On Sunday we learned that Mauer is headed for a rehab assignment. Things are hopefully headed in the right direction for him. Tougher to feel that way about the Twins in general." Its kind of one and the same. Mauer heading in the right direction is directly linked to the Twins heading in the right direction. Same could be said of Buxton. And the starting pitching.- 32 replies

I get 89 for Pressley and 81 for Reed rather than 90+. Reed has some history being effective with heavy usage. Pressley does not. I would prefer both of them pitching two innings when sharp which would give them the same amount of innings in half the appearances.

They won't bunt for hits and they won't steal but they get picked off base and get thrown out on the bases more than I have ever seen. Garver appears to have no instincts on either side of the ball. Sano would benefit greatly from using all fields and by toning his swing down. I most definitely did not expect this team to make the playoffs. The team I thought had a decent chance of the playoffs included Mauer, Buxton, Polanco and Santana along with Sano and Dozier having decent years. I don't know how capable this team is currently but they should be able to achieve the goal of not playing ugly baseball.

Ranking the Greatest Twins Since 2000
Dantes929 commented on MaxOelerking's blog entry in From the Plaza
I don't know how longevity works into the equation but Erv Santana would be in the mix for the final three spots and Thome could replace Koskie. -
Going to MLB for recaps is great but then there is no discussion. Game threads are great but I didn't want to read through 5 pages of it to see if something had already been discussed to death in that thread. Baseball Reverence is great but they are a little slow to post and kind of annoying to go there to find out what time the next three games are. and check the standings. I still go to those sites but now I don't go from one to the other several times to find out what happened in last night's game. Thanks for all you do Tom.

Article: What's Wrong with the Twins? A Fizzling Core
Dantes929 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
30-31 Now take away Kemp and Grandal. Kershaw has given them 6 of 8 quality starts and has gone 7 in half those. I am by no means laying all the blame for the Twins record on injuries. I'm just saying even the good teams aren't 2 deep at every position. Sometimes you get lucky and the subs perform even better than the starters (Escobar vs Sano) but generally there is a fair dropoff between starters and subs at most positions on most teams. -
Article: What's Wrong with the Twins? A Fizzling Core
Dantes929 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Injuries are part of the equation for every team but I would debate that good teams adequately prepare for them. Every team has their Butera's and Punto's and the like as evidenced by the fact that the Twins had both when they were a good team and when those two left they went on and played for WS teams. The good teams can often withstand one or two of these guys playing regularly due to injury but usually not much more than that. Take the top pitcher, the 1st baseman, the catcher and the shortstop off any team and they are going to suffer because if the replacements were starter level they would be starters. If Trout goes down you are replacing your best player with a backup, not with another Trout. Cases in point. Its hard to argue that WS champions are not good teams so how would the 87 Twins have done without Viola, Hrbek, Puckett, Gagne and Laudner? How would the 91 Twins have done without Erickson, Hrbek, Puckett, Gagne and Harper? I'm not saying Santana, Mauer, Buxton, Polanco and Castro are the equivalent but injuries are part of the equation of every team and sometimes the equation adds up to success and sometimes it doesn't for teams good and bad. In this equation combining injuries with bad production from Dozier and Sano is a lousy formula. -
Article: CHW 5, MIN 2: Time is Running Out
Dantes929 replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
"Bad baserunning, bad defense, bad hitting" I'll just say its bad baseball. Kind of blows when your defense first guy in Adrianza has a good night offensively but does not even come close to making up for bad defense. Ok, maybe I am wrong here. I only saw it at a bar and MLB did not include it in highlights but how did Adrianza not get an error on that ground ball up the middle? Conceivably it could have been a double play but from where I sat it definitely should have resulted on one out. Not only might have cost us the game but gave Odorizzi a couple more earned runs than he should have had. . -
John Sickels SB nation top 20 prospects March 13, 2018 "Mitch Garver, C, Grade B-/C+: Age 26, older prospect but showed potent bat in Triple-A, hitting .291/.387/.541; hit .196/.288/.348 in 46 major league at-bats but showed enough to get more chances; defense has been very good in the minors, can also handle first base; not much left to prove in the minors. ETA 2018" I remember a year or two ago that he needed a lot of work and then though I saw some reports saying he had made great strides. Depends on who you ask I'm guessing. I thought he looked pretty bad again tonight.

I still haven't seen anyone guess what Ramos would be worth. I would be fine with promoting Rupp. I don't get Garver. I am ok with his offense since we are fine with learning curves with everyone else but his defense really looks bad. Almost like he has only caught D3 college pitchers before this and is not ready for major league stuff. I don't get it because his scouting report says his defense has been very good in the minors. Give him another couple weeks and if he can't adjust bring up Rortvedt if his defense is considered better and just live with him and Rupp.

Article: Joe Mauer's Concussion Symptoms Return
Dantes929 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm kind of with you on this though I don't know any ungrateful Liberal millenials or any ungrateful Conservative millenials for that matter. Anyway, irrelevant politic smears aside I don't really feel more sympathy for Joe than any others that I know, including myself, that have had concussions even though Mauer seems like a pretty good egg. I feel a little sorry for myself because I have always enjoyed watching him play and I think he helps the Twins when healthy. Maybe his next gig will be DH where he doesn't have to worry about the dives. I think his .400 OBP would still play well with this group. -
Article: The Anatomy of a Failing Offense
Dantes929 replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The sad part is the timing of the offense going in the tank while the pitching has been good and then the offense scores 8 runs a game the last two and it coincides with the pitchers having their worst games of the season. Just the way it is now. I still believe the talent is there. They just need to get healthy and out of this funk. -
Article: When It Rains, It Pours
Dantes929 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Tyner wasn't on the team in 2008. Morneau was pretty much a shoe in for MVP until his .690 OPS after he had his stress fracture. I blame Gardy more for playing him 163 games plus the all star game plus the home run derby. That team did have Gomez, Cuddyer, Kubel, Young and Span so there were some options to give him some rest. Of course people get dinged up but if it diminishes you below replacement level you shouldn't be out there -
Article: When It Rains, It Pours
Dantes929 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
So the question really wasn't whether he should be on a rehab stint but whether he should have been on the field at all. Guys that get hurt a lot and sit out get their toughness questioned but I am way more annoyed by guys that think they need to play hurt to show how tough they are or because they think the team needs them playing hurt rather than not playing at all. Over the years there have been boat loads of cases where players do not perform well and then it is discovered they have been playing hurt. It cost Morneau an MVP and almost certainly the Twins a division crown in 2008. It probably cost the Twins a game or two now with Buxton as well as put his recovery on the slow path. -
Article: KC 2, MIN 1: Every Game is the Same Game
Dantes929 replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm a big believer in resets. How many times have the Twins been hot going into the break only to get cold after the layoff. Works the other way also. Turn the calendar over and just look at his June stats. If that doesn't look good then just look at what he does after the all star break. Maybe its get sent down and then see how good he is after being recalled. I know major league pitching is better than the minors but its not twice as good. He is absolutely not as good now as he can be. Maybe its just getting a couple hits by accident that gets him going. Every at bat I think, this is the one that turns it around. I will keep thinking that.- 95 replies

Article: KC 2, MIN 1: Every Game is the Same Game
Dantes929 replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I get your reasoning but last year he was in a similar funk except he bunted a lot more and was successful. The boogyman in his head was held at bay because the bunting worked. Kind of similar to when Valencia came up in 2010. He had a lot of infield and seeing eye hits which I believe got him to relax and he started squaring things up. Same with Buxton last year. He wasn't hitting but was getting bunt hits. Weak pop flies and strikeouts are giving him no chance to use his greatest asset. which is his speed. He should be bunting once a game when hitting well and more than that when hitting poorly. Thats just my opinion. Any one else and maybe I agree with you but he is just so frickin fast you want to give him a chance and put pressure on the defense. As far as I have seen he is batting .500 bunting (one for two) and his hit was an intentional sacrifice right back to the pitcher that he still beat out. I'm just mystified that he hasn't used this weapon at all this year.- 95 replies

"Eduardo Escobar may have a better case, given his defensive flexibility. That certainly helped Josh Harrison last year and Eduardo Nunez the year before that." Maybe it helped Harrison but every single player for the Twins aside from Nunez and Grossman had horrendous seasons. There simply were no other choices and Nunez was playing quite well. This list is a little premature. Right now Rosario but 5 more starts from Romero like his first 5 and I think he has a chance.

Well, the post is about their character and their potential so its really not that great a leap to speculate and draw comparisons. Just their performance and potential can be found in scouting reports and the daily minor league roundups. My post was probably more critical than it should have been. I cheer for the team and really prefer to do so when I think the players on the team are good guys and both of these appear to be so.
