I don't know the audience so I didn't know how far back to go. I lived through the Ron Davis era so everyone seems like Mariano Rivera to me.

You have higher standards than I do. Baltimore has scored more runs per game than Boston, Houston, Cleveland and 10 other teams this year. When the best reliever in Twins history has given up just under 3 runs per 9 and when the best reliever in MLB history gave up over 2 runs per 9 I'm not going to complain about the guy that just had two saves in two days and has a 2.31 ERA. Did you ever watch Nathan pitch? Did he ever give you the warm fuzzies? Perkins had a strong tendency to make things interesting as well. Every reliever gives up runs to every team eventually.

Umm, Top team OPS last year was Boston with .792. Twins are sitting at .860. I would love if this offense was just warming up but it is more likely that it is peaking. 3 years ago it was just absurd how badly the 9 guys projected as starters performed the first month of the season. Not a single one played up to expectations or to his history and the buy brought in as a reserve (Nunez) was the only one hitting worth a darn. Now we have everyone meeting or exceeding expectations except the guy brought in as a reserve (Gonzalez). I would love if it is sustainable but that .860 OPS is really likely to come down rather than go up. How much of a decline is what will define the season. The 2-4 losses you think we should have won is probably equaled by 2-4 wins other team fan bases thought they should have won but lost.

If anyone watches PTI on ESPN you will hear Tony complain about the Nats bullpen and Mike complain about the Cubs bullpen on a weekly basis. They have been doing it for years. The Twins pen came in and saved a win in the opener. 1st game against KC they came in to a tie game and went 3 innings to win in extra innings. The next day they came in gave up 0 earned runs over 4+ innings allowing the Twins to come back and win 7-6. 1st game against Philly the pen came in with a 3-2 lead and didn't give up a run over 4 innings. Against Detroit they came in with a 3-2 lead and held it for 3 scoreless to win 3-2. They did another nice job last night. You may think they have cost us a few games but how does that stack up against the rest of the league? Yes, Kimbrel would be an upgrade but he blew 5 saves last year and was a whisker away from blowing several in the playoffs. You can say they blew 2-3 games. I can say they did better than league average in 5-6 games to get us wins. Hurts to lose a couple in a row the way they did but a few games have been on the offense in not scoring runs and several on the starters. Overall, I am pretty happy to be 9-6.

Article: Questions About Miguel Sanó's Return
Dantes929 replied to Thiéres Rabelo's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yes, arbitrary. Take your pick of any stat for a week or any time period. I would just like to see some sign of competence after this layoff. Everyone else got 6 weeks of action to ease themselves into the season. -

Dantes929 replied to Thiéres Rabelo's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Before being called up I would like to see him perform with some level of success in the minors keeping in mind he has missed full ST. Maybe at least a week of batting .300 before being called up. -

Article: TOR 6, MIN 5: Gut Punch
Dantes929 replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Unfortunate that we didn't have some one faster to pinch run but that relay was a thing of beauty. Give Toronto some credit. They made some big plays. Giving up big hits and home runs hurt but it seems you can take any big inning by the other team and point to a walk or two that played a huge role in making it happen and twice more tonight.- 50 replies

Article: TOR 5, MIN 3: About That Bullpen ...
Dantes929 replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
No one notices relievers until they mess up. I remember Crain going 20 some games scoreless but then would blow one and the calls to run Crainwreck out of town were rampant. We now have 4 relievers with at least 5 appearances that have sub 2.00 ERA and one with a 2.84 ERA. The bullpen has helped hold onto games this season also.- 69 replies

Article: TOR 5, MIN 3: About That Bullpen ...
Dantes929 replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I kind of liked that he left Mijares in. Never quite understood taking guys out right after the damage is done. At least he saved the pen an inning. Next three guys were all righties and went down in order with two strikeouts. Timing. Anyway, all relieers give up runs. Tough one to lose but we were out hit 11 to 5. All or nothing swinging is great when its all. Not so great when it is nothing. Get em tomorrow.- 69 replies

Can't help but think Graterol is just wasting bullets in the minors. There's not even the usual red flag for guys like this of high walk rates. I want Knight up on the team just for the possibility of him doing that back flip at the end of a game.

Yeah, fair enough but relievers don't just magically appear. Milb success is still the best indicator and I don't think a lot of guys get out milb hitters as well as Vasquez has. As far as should he have been used in that spot, if he had done his job and gotten the guy out we probably aren't having this discussion.- 96 replies

Article: Hello? Rochester... Please Send Help
Dantes929 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
He has a 1.5 ERA in 5 seasons in the minors and his rookie ball season was his worst. He was Twins minor league reliever of the year last year. Of course that's not going to translate to 1.5 ERA in the Majors but it should translate way better than infinite ERA. Taylor Rogers had a less impressive minor league career and had a 7.36 ERA after 3 appearances. I'm willing to give him more than just one chance.- 96 replies

After one start this year there was actually a post about Garver receiving so many negative tweets that he was going to avoid twitter. Just a couple games later he is a hero. May and Berrios and countless others have been written off at one point by fans. Of course there are others who have done just fine right out of the gate. Rosario on his first pitch comes to mind. Maybe breaking into the league by inches is desirable for some but not for everyone. These are presumably elite and confident athletes and this is the 2018 minor league pitcher of the year for Pete's sake. He has like a 1.5 ERA in his career. There is good reason to think there is at least a 70% chance he would get his guy out and only a 1% chance that he won't get an out or a ball in play. He's a professional reliever with a good track record so lets lay a little of the blame at his feet for simply not getting the job done. He's also a professional reliever with a good track record so lets not be so quick to assume he is not a good answer going forward.- 96 replies

Article: MIN 14, NYM 8: Beating the Best
Dantes929 replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Aside from the Turtle I didn't really see guys taking wild swings. I especially liked Garver saying he would take DeGrom to center. Twins in the past from Young to Valencia to Morneau to Dozier have gotten off track by trying to pull the ball keeping in mind there is a difference between pulling the ball (good) and trying to pull the ball (bad). -
Walk haunted and I would take my odds on that play at the plate. Definitely better than 50/50 but such is baseball. Yeah, de Grom and Syndegaard are tough but the Twins often have a tougher time against the soft tossers. Good sign that the only two times the Phillies have scored fewer than 5 runs were the last two. Forget Friday, you're not going to hold anyone down with 10 freebies and 3 errors.

That Pineda might be a good pickup? That Willians Astudillo is better than Bryce Harper? That Allen Iverson throws a baseball better than I thought he could? (still pretty bad though) That Buxton is really fast and needs to get on base more? That the umpiring was better than the refereeing in the Final Four ?(how was that double dribble not called?) Mostly what today's game showed us is that the Twins played better than the Phillies today. Hopefully tomorrow will show a similar result.

Its too bad yesterday's game showed how far this team is from being able to compete against high payroll teams. I might have felt pretty good about this win otherwise.

I did leave out a couple of quadrants in my analysis. It is quite possible that the guy that Cruz might have replaced for offensive reasons hits a 3 run jack while also possible that Cruz hits a cutoff that the defensive guy doesn't and that has an impact also. I honestly have no idea how good or bad Cruz is defensively, how much more likely he is to hit a homerun that the next guy or how much more likely there is to be a fly ball in between the range of the regular outfielder and the range of Cruz. I am guessing he is better than Sano in right field and just as good as Jason Bartlett in center and honestly, as good as Willingham was in left. Just thinking of those days makes me think, yeah keep the regular outfielders out there.
-
There are definitely 4 better defensive outfielders than Cruz and maybe more. There are no better DH's so in the AL it is a no brainer. Even if he is "passable" defensively it is better to put him at DH. In the NL you have to decide if he is a bigger liability defensively than he is an asset offensively. I tend to be on the defensive side as well and he is still an asset for hitting in the pitcher's spot in a high leverage situation. If he plays the outfield and gets 4 or 5 at bats he might hit a homer that decides the game and he might mess up a play that one of the other outfielders would have made and the difference loses the game. Because of the relative odds of either happening I am ok with that decision. Its baseball, you can make good decisions that turn out badly and you can make bad decisions that work out well. This would be one of those that is too close to call so I am not going to criticize it even if doesn't go our way.

This game shows you can't go on the road in Philly in the rain on April 5th, walk 9 batters, hit another one, make three errors, be on the wrong side of a bunch of lousy calls ( see chart above plus Gonzalez was rung up when he barely even checked his swing when the Twins were still in it) in addition to just playing sloppy ball. I imagine it is not a good recipe playing against high or low payroll teams.
