Article: MIN 8, LAA 7: Twins Squeak Out Victory

I listened to the Angels announcers bemoaning the fact that the Angels left 14 stranded. I thought only the Twins had that problem.- 75 replies

Sure, but you gotta give credit to Morin for battling in a tough situation. Did you see the part about 12 games without a run except for Hildenberger? I'll accept a clunker every once in a while, especially when they escape with a win.- 75 replies

I don't like burning options casually but there are players you look at and think "I don't think he is going to get sent down a bunch of times" and Graterol is one of them to me. I could be way off base here but I am thinking he might need exposure to the big leagues, get sent down to work on whatever and then will stick. You say barring injury there's no reason that he cannot maintain that velocity and I agree but the injury part is 100% why I said what I said. How many guys can throw 98mph year after year without getting arm injuries? His command seems very good and his stuff looks nasty (limited video) and is considered plus. If he truly has stuff he needs to work on to be major league ready then so be it but if they are just going through the conveyor belt of promotions cuz that is what they always do then to me it just seems like they are wasting bullets. Again, pitching at a high level for a couple years before getting the chance in the majors and then blowing out his arm soon after is my concern.

Article: MIN 4, LAA 3: Throw Down
Dantes929 replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Pen won another game tonight. Walks always seem to loom large when the other team scores crooked numbers but especially for Gibson. Whenever I see Gibson give up runs I look to see if he has walked anyone. Usually its how the first guy gets on base.- 47 replies

Inconsistent is what we hear most about Duffey, May, Hildenberger and Romero. To me this is the best case to be made for letting guys like these pitch more than one inning when they are throwing well.- 26 replies

87 Twins ended with a -20 RD. That's 70 runs better. I think that makes this team 3.5 times better than that team already.

I will call it a little premature rather than ridiculous. How many years does a guy have that throws high 90's? I agree his stuff should play well anywhere, his walk rate is good and if he does well I would have no problem with him taking the 5th spot. Is he really learning stuff or is he just waiting in a queue for his chance? The reason I say it is premature is it is too early to give up on Pineda. Bert was throwing shutouts in the Bigs at 19. You might not like the comparison to a HOFer but he wouldn't have been HOF if they made him wait til 21 to get his chance. Does he really burn a whole year of control if he comes up for a spot start?

Nice win. Just watched the highlights. Can we please put lots of the thick soft padding out on the walls. Seems like Buxton crashes into the fence once a game.

For us. Giants embraced pitch to contact and won 3. They just did it better. Royals were certainly manufacture runs since they were last in the league in homers when they won it all. I don't know if it is sustainable but I really don't love it anyway. I like watching guys run around the bases rather than jogging. I wouldn't mind seeing a game without fences. You might have more homers because of gappers that aren't stopped but there might be more excitement.

I am fine with giving credit but there is definitely luck involved always. Last year we picked up Lynn, Odo, Reed and Morrison and relied on Buxton, Sano and Dozier to carry the offense. Great moves with pretty large upside but rather bad luck that none of those moves worked out. There was actually less reason to expect Buxton, Odo, and Perez to work out this year but they have so far in a big way. I give them credit for seeing the potential in Perez but every year we read about a number of guys changing their approach or working on this pitch or that. You put pieces in place and hope they work out but luck is definitely involved. I feel like I can temper the praise for things working out because I defended them for what I thought were good moves that did not work out.

Article: NYY 4, MIN 1: Twins Fizzle, Bronx Drizzles
Dantes929 replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
#1 argument for automated strike zones. I was at a women's college playoff basketball game many years back cheering on the home team and about halfway through I noticed something really weird. The opposing coach never uttered a word to the refs and when one of her players showed displeasure with a call they went to the bench. She literally just coached her players and let the refs call the game while the home team fans and coach were constantly complaining and yelling at the refs. Of course the home team got the vast majority of the calls and won a pretty close game but it was still the most remarkable coaching performance I ever saw. I am a big believer in the scientific method but until shown otherwise by studies I am going to go ahead and assume that yelling and screaming at officials works. You may not want to take out the human element in umping a game but then you just have to accept that the human element is flawed. -

Odorizzi just shut out Astros and the Yankees. I worry less about having an ace for possible playoffs cuz I know there are guys capable of pitching like aces at any given time and aces that can get rocked at any given time. I would rather have an ace but how can you currently classify Odorizzi's last two weeks as anyting but ace like?- 25 replies

Article: HOU 11, MIN 0: Completely Dominated
Dantes929 replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Snowball effect. Disappointing results in the 1st inning. Pineda kept them to 1 for a while and then had to basically get 5 outs in the 5th. Mijares can't find the strike zone. Cole hot and the Astros offense is good. Anyone think we would sweep these guys? I would prefer the Twins just play good baseball and lose 5-0 but it wouldn't bother me to take 3 of 4 from these guys while being outscored by 8.- 46 replies

Dantes929 replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Given the choice I would bank a 3-3 record in the next 6 games and I don't care if it came via a sweep of the Astros and getting swept by the Yankees or vice versa. Go .500 against the good teams and beat up on the bad teams. Its a formula but it bloody well works.- 87 replies

Except for the word indeed this was exactly what I was going to post before seeing yours. Well, actually, my prediction was about the results finishing the 2nd last day of April rather than heading into the last day of April but that is just semantics.- 87 replies

This is nothing but good. Orioles have won two games already against each of Yankees, Red Sox, White Sox and Rays. The biggest reason by far that their record looks so bad is the Twins. By a large margin I am guessing the two most likely outcomes of a 6 game series with the Orioles is 3-3 and 4-2. Fortunately, the most likely outcome of a 1 game at home is 1-0 so lets make it happen tomorrow.

Article: HOU 7, MIN 1: Foregone Conclusion
Dantes929 replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I like that you brought odds into and the odds you stated are quite accurate but I don't think you went far enough with it. Gibson's odds of beating Baltimore were probably 70-30. Stewart's odds were probably 50/50 at best keeping in mind that Baltimore was at home and were 8-12 coming into the series having played mostly the big boys of the East. Stewart's odds of beating Verlander probably sat at 10-90 and Gibson's odds were probably no better than 20-80. Most likely result of those two games is 1-1 regardless of who pitches. Next most likely result is going 0-2. Least likely (but still a chance) is 2-0. I have no problem sacrificing part of the least likely odds of going 2-0 to give us better odds of going 1-1. -

Dantes929 replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Not that I am down on Stewart but I would have liked to see Thorpe or Gruterol pitch this one. In general, I like to see guys that are doing well currently in the minors get the call up but I agree any team in this situation would have done the same thing. I don't like to see any conclusions other than a great pitcher on a really good team beat our 6-10 best starter with not quite the A lineup. I am guessing most teams, even the big boys have those games where they say "Our team is a little beat up and we are facing a really good pitcher. Instead of shifting things in a game we have a good chance of losing anyway, lets not compound the situation, hope for the best but situate ourselves better going forward" -
2.57 ERA with Milwaukee last year. Sometimes its just guys figuring stuff out. Twins seem to do just as well against guys throwing 96 as they do against guys throwing 89. Walks, multiple errors generally contribute greatly to 3 run homers. Its not a good recipe no matter who you play. Not the end of the world losing to Houston but would prefer it be more their doing than our own undoing.

I have no idea if he will continue his success but everyone gives up occasional homers. Everyone. Just watching on tv but it does seem like there are days it looks like I could hit him and others where it looks tough for anyone to hit him. If a manager has any value at all it would be to keep him on a short leash during the former and to lengthen it for the latter.

I guess you can care what the national media says when they say it while also not caring if they say anything at all but on the face of it Mike, you gotta admit, that was a pretty good burn.

Same feeling I get when someone says New York or Boston fans or media would never accept this or that. What do I care about what obnoxious fans tolerate? I assume Mets and Orioles fans don't tolerate failure either but it still happens.
