  1. Yes, I focus on the walks but its two sides of the same coin. The difference between 4 walks per 9 and 2.5 walks per 9 doesn't seem like so much but it speaks volumes in terms of command, how batters will approach their at bats, how umpires call the game and everything else that goes with it.
  2. It seems true of all the starters. I know it can't be true but it seems like every time the other team has a crooked number you can look back and see at least one walk as a key to the damage. I am not as infatuated as some with strikeouts. I do hate the walks. Doesn't seem like it should have this much impact but if Perez keeps it to 2-3 walks per 9 he is fine and just not very good when it is at 4 walks per 9. I guess if extra walk scores every time it adds 1.00 to his ERA.
  3. I've thought for a while now that Stewart would be a decent piece to the bullpen if only to eat up innings games like the one where we had a 10-1 lead or for an occasional spot start. Maybe an Anthony Swarzak role for the future..... Thing about streaky hitters is that they tend to streak. Cave was a great hitter the last month in the minors but if he was that guy all the time he would be Mike Trout. Its unfortunate his hot streak was there instead of here and now. I think thats all it is. He was on a hot streak and now on a cold streak. Hopefully short lived.....Most good teams don't win 5.5 out of every 10 games. They play at or near .500 ball most of the time and have some decent hot streaks to overcome a couple cold streaks to end up averaging 5.5 wins every 10 games. Current Twins have won about 15 of 21 series with a few ties and haven't been swept once. That is ridiculously good and cannot be sustained. .500 ball with one modest win streak from this point would be ok with me. 87 team was swept 7 times. The mlb season is definitely more of a marathon than a sprint
  4. Gotta know your runner. I watched the highlights and wondered if Cron fell down on his way to third. Then I thought he must have missed third and had to go back to tag it. Then I played a game of cribbage and looked up in time to see him thrown out at home.
  5. Yeah, but as insecure as we are with a 10 game lead and the best record in baseball this game was way bigger for the Red Sox who are in 3rd place and 6.5 games back. As long as this game was, whenever the camera panned the Boston dugout you could tell the players and coaches were really into this game and wanted the win badly.
  6. First of all huge props to Magill and Littell along with the entire pen since the entire pen pitched. Regardless of all the criticism this is a pen that often bends but rarely breaks so far (knock on wood).. In further review I give Garver a bit of a break on this one. The release was really quick, and the throw was a rocket right where it needed to be. Garver was too close to dive back and wasn't very far off the bag at all which made the element of surprise more effective. I think that throw picks off a lot of major leaguers and that contention is supported by the audio on mlb. The Boston announcers said the Sox are making it a thing this year to pick guys off third which makes me think they have done it several times already. Kind of reminds me of a Jazz play that worked for a while. Stockton would cut through the lane and his defender was all over him. Since he was completely blanketed there was no reason to think the wing would pass to him but the defenders back was to the ball so the pass only needed to miss the defender to get through. It was a set play because Stockton was expecting it and would get the layup. This like the pickoff can only work so long before players get wise to it but I have revised my opinion and give Boston more credit and Garver a little less blame.
  7. I was going to point out that Cora didn't complain when Schoop was called out on a pitch several inches outside on a key at bat but then I saw your link and I just say "Respect"
  8. Can't be. I have been assured that the Twins cannot compete in the playoffs with that bullpen.
  9. "Both bullpens surrendered a run in the 13th inning which kept the game going. Both runs came from a lead off home run. For the Sox it was Mookie Betts, and for the Twins, it was Kepler. This was also the first lead for the Twins all game, and capped off a three hit, three RBI night for Kepler." Twins did not take the lead there or it would have been over. Don't you love it when guys nitpick after you've taken the time to post a game recap at 2 am?
  10. Give Garver a little credit. Dude caught 17 innings, though he may have been a main cause for it. Hats off to the bullpen.
  11. Twins are 5-4 without Astudillo. I would welcome a 55% winning percentage from here on out as that would get us to 97 wins. If we are looking at small sample size I would point out we are 1-2 since Buxton got hurt.
  12. I liked the wins expectancy comment earlier. The win expectancy when Polanco was up was 55%. When Cruz started his at bat it was 56%. When Cruz failed it fell to 23% and when Rosario failed it fell to 17%. With a 17% chance of winning does it make sense to pitch Parker? I am pretty sure if we had scored even one run in the 8th our win probability goes to at least 50%. and we would not have seen Parker in the 9th. Does 17% chance of a win constitute high leverage? I think it does but not sure I want to waste one of my top three when we might need them more today and tomorrow when we might have better odds.
  13. To be honest, I didn't see the play and assumed hit was at least a little in Polanco's mind. I think major leaguers are surprisingly so-so defending bunts and they really don't like them. I would have liked to see the game at least tied there and if we had scored both the runs and won 2-1 I am not sure we have this discussion. I do believe you when you say you would not have criticized if he hit into a double play and there are those who would have been advocating sacrifice, and that there is a third group that would wait to see the results before taking a position. I am in the 4th group. Late in the ball game, down one. Good hitter up but good RBI guy behind him and home field. I am ok either way, but I think I have a little more faith in the bullpen than you do. Bummer the results didn't go our way.
  14. I kind of wish we could turn back the clock and have Polanco hit away and ground into a double play just to see how many on here would moan that the Twins didn't advance the runners when only down one run late. I'm not saying bunting was the right play but we have seen Cruz hit sacrifice flies in that situation as well as 2 run base hits in that situation. Its almost like every day is different and sometimes guys come through and sometimes they don't.
  15. I don't like ugly baseball but winning 2 of three against anyone is a good thing especially since the other two games hung in the balance til the end also. Its not easy winning big league games against anyone but I do hope they tighten things up. The Twins division champions of the prior decade won by having a couple hot streaks and playing .500 ball the rest of the time. If the Twins play .500 ball from this point they win 93 games. Playoffs? Teams win all sorts of ways. Not worried about the playoffs. Worried more about getting there.
  16. "Odorizzi is Human Jake Odorizzi gave up as many earned runs tonight, four, as he had in those previous eight outings. He looked a little more human tonight, though he did still provide the Twins with six innings."... For all we know this could have been the best Odorizzi has thrown. We forget that results are not dictated solely by the Twin's actions but by the other side as well. My theory is that all the no hitters in history would not have happened if the pitcher was facing any other team that day. There are no unhittable strikes. Most of the times a pitch is called a mistake there were several other pitches in the same spot but that is the one the batter actually squared up. Ok, off my soapbox. Nice job Odorizzi for battling. Good job offense for being relentless. Nice job bullpen for going three scoreless despite two errors.
  17. Thanks for the recap. Any chance we can bring back the section that has the times, dates and possile matchups for the next three games. I know. I'm lazy. Nice win tonight. I personally think the distress over the pen is over the top especially with Rogers back. You want to see a bad bullpen go look at the 1987 Twins stats. Best ERA on that bullpen was 3.94. By far the best. We have 5 guys with at least 15 appearances that beat that and most by a big margin. Of course it would be nice to add a dependable arm or two but we had some solid bullpens last decade and they all went through worse stretches than this. All relievers and all bullpens give up runs and give up leads. Seriously. Go look it up.
  18. I wasn't that scared but then again I didn't think they won 10-7 as you show on the headline. You might have been looking at hits given up since that was 7 vs the 5 runs given up. Once again a mixed bag. Harper gave up a hit to his first guy that allowed a run but did a nice job after that. If he allows more runs it could affect what the offense did so lets give him credit. Romero was awful but I guess that is why he threw him out there with a 9 run lead Upper 90's walks from Romero and Magill does not bode well when they should just be thinking let them hit the ball. A guy like Tommy Milone would be good for these types of games. Our bullpen did beat their bullpen 9-4. Ok, I'm reaching. Good job Pineda, Morrin and Harper.
  19. So many possible jokes to respond. I tried to make it clear that the men were asked how many different females they were with and the women were asked how many guys they were with. Otherwise, transgender, same gender, animal, corpse, robotic and alien encounters could affect the result. I suppose the definition of sex could affect the results but I suspect the answer is that men tend to inflate their numbers and women tend to be more conservative in their answers. Either that or the polling methodology was flawed. Maybe they shouldn't have asked all the drunk guys in front of the frat house and fewer women of the Temperance and Abstinence League.
  20. In an equal population where are all the extra partners coming from for the men? If there are 8 men and eight women it is possible for each man to have 8 different female partners but not if each of the women have only 4 different male partners no matter how it is distributed. In a population of 100 men and 100 women it is not possible for men to be with women 800 times (100X8 on average) while women have been with men only 400 times on average. Every time a man has been with a woman a woman has also been with a man... . Yes, the Twin pen can be worse than other contenders and getting worse. It can still get covered up by good starting pitching, offense and good fortune and at this point doesn't need a 70% win percentage. It has been a weakness but far from a fatal weakness. 3 or 4 years ago Perkins and Jepsen blew about 5 games in two weeks and the team never recovered. The pen this year has blown several games but has contributed greatly to quite a few wins also. Overall, I am not at all unhappy with the performance of the pen thus far. I wasn't expecting lights out and they have done enough to preserve enough wins to keep me happy. Yes, I want a couple better pitchers to increase the odds of continuing to feel that way. Go talk to the fans of the teams that have blown 12 games so far. I do fear they are getting worse but a lot of my fear has to do with Rogers. I don't know how serious that is.
  21. I disagree completely, or rather, a fair amount. No, I am not happy with the makeup of the bullpen and hope they improve but games are won in a variety of games and that includes playoff games. How many times over the years have I heard that starting pitching needed to be great and power was absolutely essential and then see the Royals get to two WS with a lower level rotation and the very bottom of the league in home runs. 1987 Twins had a horrible bull pen. Go look it up. Buerenguer was at a 3.99 ERA and everyone else was 4.48 or higher and in some cases much higher but in the short series playoffs Schatzeder, Frazier and Niekro came up huge. I can easily imagine a playoff where Odorizzi and Berios each pitch 7 good innings and Rogers, May, and Harper cleaning up and then a day of rest. I can also imagine, Duffey, Magill or Pineda having a good week or some one else stepping up. Getting ahead of ourselves though. The number one factor in succeeding in the playoffs is to actually make the playoffs. Lets win today.
  22. Well, yeah... but I can still blame the offense, the base running and the defense too. I am fine with putting blame on the pen for this one as well as a few other games and a few blown saves, and no, I am not happy with the bullpen as is but Is it really the view of everyone that other bullpen's are awesome and strike everyone out? I am sure the Dodgers, Cubs, Red Sox, Astros and Yankees bullpens just strike everyone out, especially their closers. I just have a hard time reconciling it with the fact that they all have 2 or 3 times as many blown saves and higher blown save % than the Twins. Kind of reminds me of the results of a poll I once heard on the radio. Said that on average guys have relations with 8 different women in their life and on average women only have relations with 4 different guys. Everyone around me nodded their head and said that sounds about right. I pointed out that unless there are twice as many women that is not how average works. They insisted the poll was correct and math is just wrong..
  23. You can widen the scope substantially. Overanxious against Milone, bad decisions on the base baths and in the field.. God forbid ever giving the other side credit for the outcome, though.
  24. I'll go farther than that. I love Garver's bat but don't think he has great instincts. However, I give him a pass on that play at the plate. That throw from Cron HAS to be low and to the 3rd base side of the plate just like a catcher's throw to 2nd has to be low and on the correct side. I think that run scores even if Garver catches it cleanly. I agree errors happen and if Cron just threw it poorly then fine, but if he wasn't aiming down and on the right side its bad baseball. You've got to know who the runner is and put your teammate in a better position to make the play.
  25. They will hit x home runs tonight. I don't think our hope, expectations or demands will change the x to y or z.
