  1. Suzuki changed his swing to bring his average up. so I suspect he will be able to hit in the .280 range with a bunch of doubles especially if he gets enough rest. I think he slumped / tired down the stretch. Still he hit over 30 2Bs last year. Suzuki will be fine for 300-500 AB the next 2 years and will be worth the value of his contract. Pinto I hope shows enough to start 50-60 games at C. It would be nice to see him get around 350 plate appearances with an OPS near .775
  2. Sign Johan either major or minor league contract is fine. I would think maybe a split contract with incentives to 5 or 8 million with a one million base. On the minor league contract part probably have an opt out date after May 1rst as he can't possibly expect 100% to make the team out of spring training without throwing a few innings in the minors after taking 3 of the last 4 years off. Johan is likely to resign with us due to familiarity with the organization. We almost had him last year but Baltimore offered more money.
  3. They will keep players like Millone, Pelfry and Deunsing for depth. They are very good 1th and 12th and 13th type pitchers to have on the staff.
  4. I do think this will be a good book.
  5. I saw Larry and Lee MacPhail. I didn't see Andy mentioned.
  6. Andy Macphail isn't listed in the book. surprising...2 Twins World Series and also rebuilding the orioles as they won as soon as he left with the foundation in tact. I guess not winning with the Cubs killed it for him.
  7. I think its more because they are between the ages of 16 and 18 and most of the prospects we rate start around 18-19 after they graduate high school. Next year Diaz and Minier should be up to Elizabethton and we will start talking more about them. I have a hard time rating prospects in the low minors so I tend to give preference to AA and AAA players before the A ballers and rookie leaguers. Going to the Dominican League is just a little too far for me to be able to comprehend on a prospect list where I am not in the know on everyone. Thrylos, I did want to say I thoroughly enjoyed reading your list. Its well though out and I agree with most of it. I do think Gordon is being rated a little higher than he should at this point. The one I think could be higher is Burdi. He is a future all star from what I keep seeing and reading. Even if he is in the bullpen if he is that dominant he makes baseball games an 8 inning game instead of 9.
  8. Why is there so much age discrimination on these boards? if the guy can get the job done he can have the job. There are lots of pitchers who go well into their 40's.
  9. I have Polanco higher on my list too. not quite 2nd but I do have him ahead of Gordon and Kohl at this point. Though I tend to give more credit when a player A: gets promoted to the majors early and B: Shows promise at AA. I think the jump is pretty big to AA and if you can make it there you have a chance of at least having a cup of coffee in the majors. anything below Beloit is too far down to judge unless the prospect is stand out or shows something we take notice of. If I could go to the games and scout I would probably judge the top prospects differently but levels go into consideration and age for level does too as far as being an arm chair grader goes.
  10. If only we had options for our bullpen we..........
  11. Washington is in win now mode. I would only trade Dozier for a better value and Giolito may be it and don't forget Dozier is still inexpensive which is another huge benefit for the Nationals at this time. We would win that trade but Washington would get a real good piece of their puzzle at their weakest position on a team that is already likely to be a 90+ win team this year. I am not saying Washington does this trade, but I don't think they wouldn't either. And with all of that being said I don't think the Twins are looking to trade Dozier on any front at this point. I honestly think the Twins think they are real close to contending that if a few things break right for them they could be in the race this season.
  12. comment on #24 prospect. 1 strikeout per 6 Plate Appearances is not a strikeout machine. That's actually a pretty decent rate. The goal is to be better than 1k per 5 PA and anything worse than 1k per 4 PA is a strikeout machine. I could be wrong though but that s what I see. Overall this is a good read. I don't disagree with your thought process other than that above.
  13. Baltimore is showing interest according to MLBTRADERUMORS.com I think he is an ok bench player. He is not good enough to start but he is good enough to have on the bench. He can play several positions well. and pinch hit or DH in interleague games. There are teams who are week in hitting in the OF who can use a player to help fill a hole. see Delmon Young, Mike Carp, Johnny Gomes, Nate Schierholtz, Scott Hairston, Endy Chavez. These are just the ones who are currently free agents. some of these guys are better than Parmelee but he does fit into this class of player. Parmelee could also have an unexpected breakout performance and hit 15-20 HRs in 250 ABs some season. I can see him getting around 2000-maybe 3000 plate appearances in his career if all goes well for him. I definitely wouldn't pay much for him. maybe a 550k contract for a season with a split in the minors. That could be a low cost option for a team with a budget concern.
  14. I think a Dozier extension makes sense if the price is right. I think Dozier will age better than Uggla as he is also faster than Uggla. Dozier may loose his power in his early 30's but he'll be a good defender till he gets closer to mid 30's. A 4 year extension with 1 or 2 option years makes sense if we get a good value on the extension. Gyorko, Carpenter signed for 6 years and 50-55 million and I think there is another 2b was it Kipnis? or Walker with Pirates? They were comps thrown around for Dozier earlier. So if he signs a 23 million extension then I am all for it. The extension would need to allow for regression so what would a second baseman hitting with a .720-.730 OPS make the next 4 years as opposed to what would a second baseman who hits at .750-.760 or so OPS.
  15. I keep reading that our OF defense is soooo bad that they will not catch anything in the OF and we will loose many games because the other teams will figure if they can hit it to the OF we have no chance to catch the ball and make a play so we will be beaten into submission because we are sooooo helpless out there. If only we had Manny Ramirez in LF and Jose Canseco bouncing balls over the fence off of his head we would be a much better defensive team out there. So my question is this. How many runs will the OF defense cost us? can you break that down by player? and how many wins will that cost us in the end? also how many runs will the OF create? and how many wins does that give us back? While we don't have elite defense and I do believe there will be times that will cost us runs and probably a few games next year. I do think our improved rotation and offense will more than make up for it and we end up an 85 win team. I want to understand how bad our OF defense truly as I doubt it doesn't cost us more than 3 games next year. And I do believe we will contend.
  16. I think the defense is below where we would like it to be. with an adequate CF the OF defense will be fine. We have Schaeffer who can sub for late inning defense. Torii was a plus defender until he moved to Detroit. I don't think he forgot routes, or how to throw, and what not. I think he has lost a step but that can be compensated for to some degree. He will be better defensively than the posters here are making his defense seem. Yes a speedster who can catch everything will make the defense better but can they hit like Hunter or will they kill more rally's then they stop with their defense. But I think Detroit's stadium is a bigger cause of his defensive decline then his actual decline. I bet he grades out even defensively or league average which is fine with our offense. If Suzuki hits .280 and Santana hits .300 with close to 30 SBs and Mauer gets close to .320 and Hunter hits like himself We may have a top 3 offense in the league. Our pitching should be league average. That should net us a positive run differential. which = a winning season.
  17. what's the scouting report on Stauffer? I know nothing about his stuff.
  18. I think Meyer starts in AAA regardless as he has options unless he kills it in spring with great control and low pitch counts. I think it will start with a veteran Pelfry or Millone and May will either be in the bullpen or minors. Come May 1rst I suspect that can change. Not to contradict myself, while I think the above is how it plays out it, the 5th starter will be the one who deserves it the most in spring training. I think it would be interesting if it was Berrios.
  19. Parmalee has been outrighted to AAA. I guess that means he went unclaimed and chose to accept the assignment. Also Fryer was outrighted meaning the backup C has to be Pinto.
  20. I would trade for him if we had Pohlads permission to take on the salary. I would include Meyer, Millone, and one of Polanco, Walker or Kepler and a reliever like Achter or Oliveros or Tonkin. I would be open to other combination of prospects too but this one seems to have 4 prospects who can play in the majors with one who has experience and another who is about ready if not yet ready for the rotation and a middle IF which they will need as they now have a hole at SS but will soon have a hole at 2B when they either trade or move Utley to a new position That would put May as the Long reliever/6th starter with Berrios and Pelfry as the 7th and 8th starters. We would be fine in this type of scenario. Our middle IF prospect depth will thin with this trade but we do have other prospects here, and we have lots of relief prospects so adding one who can help out now for a while is not a big loss. I would probably get some cash back in the trade to help pay Hamels contract. 20 - 25 million maybe around 5 - 6 million per season. That would lessen the financial blow. There is definitely enough prospects to get this type of a deal done. I wonder if it would make more sense to wait to see if we are in the race this year around the all star break and how our prospects pitch first. But we are getting close to having a big crunch of talent that needs to be on our roster and I would rather trade several of those pieces for a big time pitcher like Hamels then wait for crunch time and lose a few through the rule 5 draft.
  21. Pinto/ Fryer/ Hermann Nunez/ Punto Escobar Schaefer These seem to be the going competition for the bench roles. of course Punto is not signed by Minnesota I put him in competition with Nunez for a spot and the back up C should be either Pinto or Fryers. I put Herman in there as he does have a small chance to break camp with the Twins I suppose. Nobody is going to beat out Escobar and Schaefer seems a safe bet at this point as well. I think Pinto and Nunez have the upper hand in the competition Nunez more than Pinto but I suspect our bench will be: Pinto, Nunez, Escobar and Schaefer.
  22. Also wanted to point out that I thought this would be a pretty solid debate as the Twins keep trying to get the band back together and There was a big debate on whether to tender Nunez a contract or not. That debate is mainly cause he is a terrible defender at SS and other IF positions. Punto is still a good defender and both are not good hitters with Nunez the far superior hitter. Punto hits like Hicks in that he can get on base with a .220 average and no power. Punto will also come with a 500k or so price tag as he is already under contract with the A's. Nunez still has the ability to steal 10-20 bases off the bench so that has value to as a pinch runner. And since this is for the last spot on the roster Either choice will have a minimum impact. I would be curious if the Twins would invite Punto to Spring training as a non-roster invite or sign him outright.
  23. And your bird is the American Swallow.....I mean European ....AAAAHHHhh!
  24. I like this move. I would be surprised by anyone who didn't. Its about 2-4 million per season discount. Hughes gets closer to making 100 million for his career with enough of a guarantee to get close enough to 100 million that it doesn't matter if he gets there or not. He'll be eligible to sign a new contract that can take him to 200 million in career earnings if he continues to pitch well. This is a nice early Christmas present to the Fans from the Pohlad's this year. This is a lot nicer then the middle finger we get when a free agent leaves. Also lost in the new is the Twins signed Will Ledezma a LHRP to a minor league deal.
  25. I like Nunez too. He does have speed and should be able to steal more bases next year. but I do like Nick Punto as well especially with his better defense which is something we seem to be missing.
