  1. I'm not sure he's "that" replaceable. He brings a decent stick, and he can play multiple positions. How many backup catchers in the league can claim that?
  2. Doumit's bat and flexibility are worth a resign. 2 yrs at $8-10m works for me.
  3. Noted. But if you look at list you provided, virtually every trade involves a game changer. The only move I would say not involving a "game changer" would be the Capps/Ramos deal. The rest of that list involves all-stars for prospects, or essentially prospects for prospects. Span and Willingham are no where near the level of any of those considered to be the centerpiece of those deals. Unless some team is incredibly stupid (ie Bill Smith), there is no way we would get anything of value back by trading either one of those. The only true game changer the Twins have is Mauer. His contract and iffy health situation make him unmoveable. I am all for rebuilding the system, but we have to be realistic about what we are talking about.
  4. You use Jack Morris as a sign that the Twins will sign top FA pitchers? 21 years does not a current reference make... (By the way, Morris was 36 yrs old and coming off 2 very subpar seasons. Hardly a top FA signing)
  5. Blackburn is currently the textbook example of "sunk money".
  6. Here we go with more "Mauer is soft" BS
  7. Carroll Casilla Parmalee Butera Capps
  8. Everybody needs to prepare to be disappointed. The Twins will not get "blown away", they will not get any top prospects in return for any player on the roster, including Mauer. Teams do not trade top prospects any more. You can count on one hand the number of top shelf prospects that have moved in the last few years. Too much cost control for high production. Veterans are always overvalued. The Twins most moveable pieces, Willingham and Span, both have baggage. Willingham is in year 1 of 3, is 33 yrs old, can't defend, and is having one of the best starts of his career. Span has the concussion thing, along with some perceptions that he won't move from CF. No way the Twins will get top level prospects for these two.
  9. I've always said TF reminds me a lot of Wrigley. Wrigley is worth the trip.
  10. Starting pitching is such a crapshoot it's not hard to understand why the Twins are reluctant to spend big dollars on a free agent starter. Look at guys like Tim Lincecum and Roy Halladay who have dropped dramatically this year. Then there is RA Dickey and Lance Lynn who may be your two front runners for Cy Young in the NL. When you factor in the injury rate, spending big money on starting pitching can be an expensive gamble. There are probably 15 true number 1 pitchers in baseball. If you are not going to get one of them, I wouldn't spend more than $7-9 million on a multi year contract for a free agent starter, and would not go longer than 3 years for any starter period. One year, high dollar contracts can work as your risk is mitigated.
  11. They would not get any real value for Willingham, or anybody else for that matter. People have such short memories. Look at what we got for Santana, the best pitcher on the planet (at that time) entering his prime years. We didn't get one top tier prospect. Do you really think that we would get any value for a 33 year old outfielder with no defensive skills playing over his career numbers? People need to come back to reality.
  12. Span will not be traded this year. Willingham will not be traded this year. Perkins will not be traded this year. Morneau may be traded, but I highly doubt it. Liriano will only go if the Twins get a decent pitching prospect. Doumit may be traded, though I see the Twins trying to resign him instead. Pavano will be traded. Valencia will be moved, but probably during the offseason.
  13. I think Mauer has earned to right of being called "best catcher currently playing today". He has been a fairly durable catcher with mounds of strong numbers to support it. As for best of all time, I think he needs a couple more high production years before he could be in the discussion of top 10 (longevity factors into this discussion, IMO). It will be interesting to see how long the over-cautious Twins are willing to keep him there...
  14. The absolute best job of play calling that Hawk has ever done in his entire life. Well played. Jim Thome represents everything that is great about baseball. He has a sterling reputation, does whatever is requested of him, goes out of his way to help younger players... oh, and he's pretty good too. As fun as it is to hate the White Sox, I always loved what Thomebrought to the table when he played there.
  15. I am just embarrassed for all of you that read Souhan, much less try to put some credence to whatever spilled out of his fingers.
  16. The best handle I have seen in a while...

  17. Really? It looks to me like like you were saying that if these seven things went right, then everybody wouldn't feel so bad about a player the Twins overpaid for blowing up in their face (and yes, they did overpay, and yes, Young did not come close to his potential). At the time, the Twins had a surplus of AAAA control pitchers, not power guys. Trading Garza and a better-than-league-average starting shortstop for a poor defensive starting outfielder with one decent offensive season and a history of being a head case was a bad decision. The Twins have never been in a position where pitching was organizational strength. As for your anger control issues over somebody you don't know calling you out on a comment made on a message board, I can only suggest counseling...
  18. Yeah, and if the Twins had traded Nick Punto for the Yankees for Derek Jeter, A-Rod, and then traded a young Valencia for Tim Lincecum, and then traded Casilla for Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz, and then traded Parmalee for CC Sabathia, and then traded Pat Neshek for Roy Halladay, and then traded Dan Gladden for Vin Scully, and Justin Morneau never had a concussion, and Joe Mauer never got hurt, and Joe Nathan never got hurt, and Jesse Crain resigned with the Twins, we would be the World Series champs three years running, and everybody on this website would be drooling over the wonderful job Gardy is doing. If if's and but's were candy and nuts, we'd all have a Merry Christmas. If this and this and this... Get out of here with that nonsense.
  19. Come talk to me when he starts going through the league a second time.
  20. That trade was a disaster waiting to happen. You never trade pitching for hitting, it never turns out. Garza, for all the headaches, was a decent young pitcher who was improving. Delmon was a headcase in the minors and a headcase in the majors. He showed flashes of offensive ability, but was never able to be consistant with it. Bartlett was a slightly better than league average shortstop, a position the Twins have had problems with going back to Gagne. It was an overpayment then that looks 5 times worse now. Delmon will never be more than a low level outfielder due to his stupidity. There was nothing more the Twins could do with him. I do agree they should have cut bait with him a year earlier.
  21. Pavano and Liriano will not be Twins next year. Capps is a toss up (though I would like to see him gone, wasted money in my opinion). I believe the Twins like what they see out of Doumit, and I could see him signing a multi-year deal here if the price is right. Morneau will not be traded this year. While not at the level of Mauer, he is too much a face of this franchise.
  22. Of Marquis will go on to win 10 games for them. Then everybody posting on Twins Daily will say that they could see this coming, that the Twins should never have let him go, and Gardy needs to be fired because of it.
  23. I have been an ESPN Insider for 4 years now, I will continue to keep renewing it. For baseball, Law and Olney are worth the price alone. But you also have access to the rumors page and the ability to go back and read chat transcripts (if you are into that sort of thing). Of course you also get tons of premium content for the other major sports as well. Definitely worth the price of a magazine subscription.
  24. The point is that you take flyers on guys that you believe have upside. Burton obcviously has some upside and it has worked out for him so far. Whose to say this isn't a diamond in the rough. Are we really going to argue about guys the Twins take flyers on? They obviously feel that their lower level guys aren't ready to advance.
  25. You're complaining about this type of signing? Really? -We didn't have to trade for him (only cost us money). -Our our organizational pitching depth is in shambles. -It looks like he has some capacity to strike people out. You take flyers on these guys and sooner or later one will pan out (Jared Burton hasn't been pitching too poorly).
