    Even if you make the assumption that: - Hunter would truely consider coming back to the Twins - He could be had for a 1/2 year deal under $10 mil I don't think that there is really a spot here for him. I agree that the Twins need a 1-2 year guy, but Hunter needs to DH o a semi-regular basis as well. The Twins have that spot spoken for with the Doumit/Mauer/Morneau trifecta. I think he could bring some life back to the clubhouse, along with another decent right-handed stick, but I don't see this being as good fit on this team as the roster is currently constructed.

    What's your take on Bremer and Gladden? Bremer is a company man, but does fairly well. I would give him a B-. Gladden is the worst thing on the radio I have heard. I would even rate him lower than Bill Walton for the NBA. Gladden rarely lets you now the situation, does a very poor job of explaining the action, and gives little to no technical details on what is going on. He is the worst announcer I have heard on thde radio or television, hands down. Grade = F-. He needs to go now.

    The Twins should proceed as follows: 1) Offer him a 2 yr/$14 mil contract. The Twins know what they have, the inconsistencies translate to 4-5th starter money. His ability to run a great string of innings probably boosts his value a little. When he declines that: 2) Look to trade him for anything of greater value than the sandwich pick. If that doesn't happen: 3) Make him the 1 yr qualifying offer. If he takes it, the Twins are only on the hook for one year. One year deals (even $12 mil ones) don't hamstring you. If he declines, the Twins get the pick. It's that simple. On a related note, does anybody know if there is a limit to the number of times a team can "offer" a player? For example, if the Twins offer Liriano the $12 mil qualifying offer, and he accepts, can they do it again next year? Is there a limit to the number of times they can do that?

    Still too early, but you have to like that he is doing other things than trying to hit homeruns. Let's hope he doesn't revert back to the Plouffe of old...

    Agreed. I wonder if the time will come when a manager truly puts his batting order from best hitter to worst hitter. Going on the premise that each spot in the order is worth about 15 at-bats over the year, how that would compare to a more traditional lineup.

    A question back on point... If replacing Willingham's numbers is such an easy thing to do, why is everybody hyperventilating ove what he has done so far? I would contend that right-handed power hitting outfielders that come relatively cheaply are not that easy to acquire. Why else is would he be such a hot commodity in the trade market right now?

    I see a lot of people saying that the Fan Graphs formula of what a player is worth is pointless or worthless, but nobody really saying why. Anybody care to shed some light on what makes this such a poor resource? Could it be that it is poor because it doesn't fit your opinion that Joe Mauer is overpaid?

    Per a Twitter post from Aaron Gleeman, Fan Graphs has Joe Mauer on pace to be worth $24 million this year. A reminder to everybody that he is making $23 million this year. Where are all of "Mauer is overpaid" comments now? (That sound you hear is the crickets chirping in the background.)

    This is a great article. I remember the rush on Donruss looking for Griffey's rookie card, as well as the Upper Deck roll out. I wouldn't call it foolish or childish. What is wrong with having an easy, cheap way to relive some childhood joy? Kudos to you.

    Anybody who says they are more optomistic now lies like a <analogy removed due to PG rated website>. Outside of Diamond, every starter has massively underperformed. To say we are better off with PJ Walters in the rotation is, well, just wrong.

    For some reason the Twins feel they need to have the "Closer" position solidified, whether it is a good decision or not. Everybody new that the Twins chances this year were pretty slim, yet they decided to resign him anyways. While trading him would now, especially when he has been pitching fairly well, would make the most sense, I don't believe sense will play into the team's decision. If Capps is not moved before the deadline, it is a guarantee the team will pick up his option for next year. Glenn Perkins does not need to be the closer, they need to continue to put him in the high leverage middle inning situations. He excels there. Locking him into a fixed situation where the pressure level fluctuates does not seem to suit him. Does anybody remember Matt Guerrer? Same thing for him.

    Does anybody else realize we are not the only team looking for pitching? All things being equal, who is going to come here? The Twins will not get a top tier or 2nd tier FA pitcher. Any pitcher they do bring in will be overpaid (see Matt Capps and Jason Marquis). At least that will give all the haters something else to complain about.

    Anybody putting stock into being a starter on the All-Star team should be ashamed of themselves. This is a fan love fest, and the more populous cities tend to have more of their people starting.

    The Twins have a long and splendid history of having 4/5's be the foundation of their starting pitching staff. Even when they had "good" pitching, it was Radke and everybody else, or Santana and everybody else. While I agree that they should look outside the organization for pitching help, I do not believe you will see any major upgrades there. Unless something falls in their lap, or there is another major injury, here is your starting rotation for 2013: 1) $5 mil FA 2) Diamond 3) Gibson 4) Blackburn 5) Hendricks I never said it was pretty, just that this is what you will see.

    I guess we could be the Royals or Pirates. Frankly I will take being a playoff team 70% of the time vs. being a powerhouse one year and floundering for five. It depends if you are in it for the Glory or the Ride (I wrote about this earlier in the year). The methodical/conservative approach allowed the Twins to be competitive for a decade. Bill Smith destroyed that in a matter of a few years. Ryan will build it back up again. No reason to believe otherwise. BTW - The Bryce Harper (or Mike Trout for that matter) comparison is not entirely fair. For one, his type of skill set does not come around very often. Second, for all of his brovado, he has been the model player since coming to the bigs. Many articles have been written about his turnaround. Third, the Twins but up with Delmon Young's BS, the would work with the right player.
