  1. Morneau was clean-shaven at the beginning of the game and had a long weekend camping trip beard in the postgame. Or I am have drink too. Or both. Anyway, nice win. Excellent Deduno chainsaw-juggling casino act continues. Gardy more coherent than usual in PG.
  2. Dude, without proof, that's just "hyperbole". They get nothing more than Rosario, if he fails to turn a tougher-than-routine double play tonight.
  3. Agree that that the regular season is a much better gauge of how good those teams were. Few people would hesitate to label them great if they'd had a 1970's Vikings-style run of dominance but fell just short of a championship. They'd be remembered as great, and probably figure much higher in most fans' hierarchy of MN pro sports team lore. Instead, they're the good teams who always got crushed in the playoffs. And since the run was comprised mostlly of two different sets of players, that will be Gardenire's legacy as well in most people's minds if he's done this year: good manager, crushed in the playoffs.
  4. Shane Wahl, meet Top Gun. Top Gun, meet Shane Wahl.
  5. Looks like twice as many people as I thought chose to see it as hyperbole rather than snark. How about shifting the economic scale back to baseball and simply pointing out that the Twins pocketed more unspent payroll than the Astros or Marlins spent on payroll? With contraction and relocation off the table for a while, it appears there is no action left at the franchise's disposal that will go completely undefended.
  6. There are plenty of reasons to be excited and optimistic about being a Twins fan. The problem is that most of those reasons are not on the major league roster right now. How many days until Deduno pitches again?
  7. There are some agents who won't even listen to extension offers that go beyond team control. And the twins will end up "locking up" the guys who flame out too. Also, it's interesting that people assume the Twins will spend whatever it takes to make up for early callups and super 2's when they didn't even spend what they budgeted this year. Not a terribly safe bet.
  8. Put another way, is it really still a certainty that the risk of at least experimenting with rightie-only would outweigh the reward? Either way, hope they tear up aaa and hold their own in the majors the second time around. Man, tough year for the FO to sell hope. The ace, the RoY candidate, and the opening day starter all in aaa on August 1st.
  9. Pretty much sums up the past 18 months.
  10. How much objective evidence is there that he's improving, other than not looking completely lost like he did in April? If there's good news, I've missed it. Won't be the first or last time. Subjectively, we can agree to disagree. He's certainly better than he was on opening day, and he's still young enough to make dramatic improvements in his game. Still looks overmatched left-handed and erratic in the field to me, though. Yes, it's a popular notion that Hicks 'deserves' to stay up or wouldn't benefit from being sent down. But it's hard for me to put much stock in the opinion of anyone (especially the Twins) who thought it was a good idea for him to skip AAA entirely and even bat frigging leadoff, for heaven's sake, on opening day. That was a no-brainer bad call. As for the others, well, their opinions would mean more if they supported them with examples of other players who were developed effectively by keeping them in the majors despite their being among the worst players in baseball in a major facet of their game, which Hicks is when he bats left-handed. it should go without saying that I'm not a Hicks hater, but I already know that it doesn't for some people. He seems a good kid, poised and anxious to learn and improve his game. If there's a good reason why that shouldn't happen at aaa for a while, I still haven't heard it.
  11. Sss kind of goes without saying unless you're posting at the strib. The unspoken point of including AAA numbers for Hicks is just that: there are hardly any. He skipped a level, has been consistently overmatched against rhp, and yes, while brief, his time in aaa exactly mirrors his mlb numbers. That leads me to believe he either has things to learn there, or would at the very least benefit from the confidence of lighting it up there. My guess is the former.
  12. I think there's at least a little indication they might not use it when you consider that the unspent payroll this year approaches the GNP of some economically challenged nations.
  13. And in addition to my implicit hatred of scouting, I'm also clearly against recycling and animal rights because I didn't put in a pitch for them either, right? If you have some sort of actual thought about the subject of the thread, serve it up, Meat. If not, why are you posting in it?
  14. 0 Outfielder @A (Ok, fine, it's Arcia): .257/.317/.408 in MLB .320/.430/.608 in AAA Rochester. Outfielder A# (Surprise! It's Hicks!) I know, right !?!) .194/.262/.344 in MLB .190/.261/.238 in AAA Rochester. Welcome aboard, FNG. All due repect, but why would you even post that.... stuff?
  15. Like the first one better. Vs. right-handed pitching, Hicks is the worst left-handed hitter in baseball as measured by OPS or wOBA. He's batted .171 since the ASB. He's not helping the team in any meaningful way, and despite the nice babip-fueled June, he's not really improving at this point. It's time for him to just go work on getting better at Rochester, and get ready to be a contributor next season and beyond.
  16. Just meant he could end up the number 2 catcher in that weak cast of characters, and AJ Ellis taking a bouncer in the store would mean Son of Sal could end up playing 4 times a week. No, did not mean that Butera could get hit in the junk, suddenly develop the ability to hit, and shoot to the top of the depth chart.
  17. Really? How much better was Liriano than Kyle Smith is now, and how much less valuable is Morneau than journeyman 4th OF Justin Maxwell, assuming the Twins eat most of his salary? It's not a given that Morneau could have netted a Kyle Smith, but it's obvious that a borderline starter or worthwhile sub of similar value to Morneau can.
  18. From AAA journeyman to being just a passed ball to the cup away from being the everyday catcher for a contender. What a long, strange trip it's been.
  19. Or even worse... Ryan on the phone with Butera as all the GM calls disappear from the other lines, getting Son of Sal to drop a no-trade clause that the organization kept secret out of fear of being the laughing stock of MLB...
  20. Ouch. This one might be too soon for the Son of Sal Fan Club members.
  21. "When you get the answer you want, hang up."
  22. Wear it to his HOF induction. He's finally going to an organization that values catcher defense
  23. Annoying Blue Moon "Behind the Craft" ad to the Strib sports page for a Popup to Be Named Later. Get it done.
  24. Is Toby G. still in playing shape?
  25. Or Kemp. All stocked up on center fielders...
