  1. Well done. Whiffed on the flying sockeye in my zone when visiting there, but in my defence, Far Side genius Gary Larson was there and was pointed out to me simultaneously by a very close friend. The hit to my UZR/150 rating was well worth the briefly-raised eyebrow of a guy who bore a striking resemblance to Socrates 'Johnson' of Bill and Ted fame.
  2. Great find. Gwynn's career pre-dated the internet and inter-league play. Historical research well done, darin. And yeah, the Kirby factor. Mirror image, and separated at birth. Body type a spot-on match. Easy .300+ hitters. Puckett was the force of nature. Gwynn was the technician. Klammer vs. Russi, 1976. Godspeed, Tony G. The game is better from your contributions.
  3. Wind blowing out to left according to TD Eye in the Sky. Even an 'excuse me' might make a mark on The Wall tonight. Forget home runs and offensive value by position. Imagine Mauer finishing his career at first with Boston. If he adjusts and routine grounders to second turn into singles via the shift and his home field routine fly outs to left turn into doubles off the G. M., oh, let's say twice a week for each, he's first ballot all the way.
  4. You're hired. When can you start? Best, The Pohlads
  5. You may have to grab the grass to keep from falling off the earth before this turns around...
  6. In deference to the World Cup, Phil Miller at the Strib is using the metric system for baseball reporting this week, and logs only 17 hits for the Tigers... http://www.startribune.com/sports/twins/263170911.html Could be worse: http://padresteve.files.wordpress.com/2012/08/youngfrankenstein8.png?w=500&h=281 The Twins could be counting on a starter tomorrow whose road ERA (with peripherals to match) is double his very nice 3.60 home ERA. Sorry, couldn't help it. They showed a lotta heart shaking off the nine run lead, and Detroit looks a bit more vincible than the Mt. Rushmore rotation versions of the past couple of seasons. And let's not forget that the Twins have trailed the Tigers in run differential over the past three seasons by about 800 cumulative runs. Unless the frontrunner is composed almost entirely of 35 year old mercenaries (cough*NYY*cough), that's a tough gap to hop in a season or two. Eight. Hundred. Runs. That's way more than De Dude has given up in his last eight starts. Mentioned that it could be worse, right?
  7. Hunter's non-attempt on the Fryer hit followed by Nunez jogging into third did it for me. Looks from the timing of your post that it was a highlight for you as well. The fact that Nunez is probably injured is just a head start on another clunker tomorrow.
  8. Imagining Dombrowski has been texting Little Caesar about money to get help for the bullpen after every run they've given up today... Was about to say this is the ugliest game I've seen in a long time, but then remembered that gem last Sunday vs. the Astros.
  9. Twins gave 40 starts last year to guys (including Gibson) with higher xFIP's than VW's 4.76, and 53 more to Pelfrey and Diamond, who were both with a tenth or two of that mark. Looks like his walk rate in AAA this year is between a third and a quarter of what it was with the Twins last year. Is there a sadder play in baseball than the home run trot followed by a mad scramble to reach second? VMart should know better, even in a blowout.
  10. Ten runs is a big lead, but you're still a professional, Tigers outfield. Two bad misplays on the triples. Hunter's was especially bad, and no backup to boot. At least the Twins are finally making contact, four innings too late...
  11. Perfect image to go with the way they're playing!http://static5.businessinsider.com/image/4def770d4bd7c86052150000/ex-sacer-why-i-ran-down-the-street-in-my-underwear-on-a-business-trip.jpg http://img.youtube.com/vi/TelYnkfQQ9U/hqdefault.jpg Three more innings to go. Could get frontal before it's over...
  12. If there's a comeback, my prediction is that it will randomly coincide with Sanchez finally coming out of the game in the 7th or 8th, depending on whether he has to sit through another Tigers 20 minute bat-around.
  13. That, and one G. D. hit... http://www.crimsoncast.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/harry-doyle.jpeg And there are probably several Twins Cities-based fans who chose outdoor pursuits this afternoon before the game even began. Deduno is fun to watch and all, but it's hard for even him to compete against 60 degrees, solid overcast skies, and intermittent rain showers in a state with 6 months of winter.
  14. Didn't see much of the game, but pretty sure I saw the one you're talking about. At first it looked like he was giving up on it as uncatchable and letting Santana track down the rebound. But the glove went up and came down with the ball; no dive, no last-second drama. The route was pretty much perfect, without the etch-a-sketch tendency he exhibited earlier on occasion, tracking laterally or adjusting depth, but not getting a simultaneous read and taking the most direct route to where the ball was headed. Hard to know if he'll hit lefties enough or develop the plate discipline to be really good, but at age 23.1, wouldn't bet against it. And he's already really fun to watch, which is something that was seldom said of many, many Twins players the past three years.
  15. BBRef hasn't updated the total to include the two million he made with the Twins for 2014. He has officially declined assignment to Rochester. A good month or two there might have earned him a cash considerations trade to another organization looking to capture some pinch hitting lightning in a bottle, but it seems likely that he's ready to be done. He's a small town kid from the middle of nowhere (and 20 miles from the geographic center of the U.S) who made a fortune playing baseball after a devastating injury, and he's got most of the rest of his adult life to do pretty much whatever he wants. I'd say he's done awfully well for himself, and pretty well for the Twins too.
  16. It would be interesting to see his numbers without the Deduno games. De Dude makes every catcher look bad.
  17. Admire your optimism. That being said, if the Twins are being operated under this philosophy, then my hope would be that Dave St. Peter not be allowed to finish the day in his office. Ideally he would be escorted from the building and have his personal effects sent to him. The Tigers have the best rotation in the AL, and probably all of MLB. The Twins have one of the worst. The Tigers have arguably the best hitter in baseball and his 2.6 WAR at first base. Was a huge fan of Mauer the catcher, but the Twins have a replacement-level 0.1 WAR player at first. The rest of the lineups favor the Twins, but a healthy Austin Jackson will likely reverse that too. And the Twins trail the team in line for the last wild card spot by a run differential of more than 50. Pinto needs to split time with Suzuki for the rest of the month, and then become the starting catcher. That way, by the end of the season, the Twins will have some idea if they have a catcher when they contend for real, or if they need to find one elsewhere. And if they do send him down, it should be because he's over his head and incapable of learning at this level, not because they 'need' Suzuki in the lineup to be competitive. PS By my count, Pinto had 4 years of full season baseball and 2 years in rookie ball prior to 2014.

  22. Whew. 'Due to technical issues, Twinsland's Duensing-go-round attraction is out of operation'. http://www.freefoto.com/images/11/06/11_06_14---Merry-go-round--The-Hoppings--Newcastle-upon-Tyne_web.jpg
  23. Batter distracted by UFO above stadium...
  24. And if they lose by a run that happens to be the leadoff batter that Correia put on, it's on the bullpen, not Gardy or Sunshine.
