    Great job of keeping the game alive by Zukes, but that's just flat out bad baseball by the Toronto LF. Situational awareness is easy to talk about but hard to practice. His dive cost the Jays the lead, plain and simple.

    My mental image of that was of him already rounding second as a 500 ft-high fly to center is dropped because all three outfielders converge and knock each other out.

    Been meaning to get into it more, but my problem is that it's not possible for me to just focus on the World Cup or just FIFA in general. No, it will have to be all or nothing for me, I'm afraid. Will either have to understand the dizzying array of leagues and levels that seemingly dwarf MiLB's relatively streamlined progression, or just forget it. Or maybe I'll just join an honorary chapter of the Green Street Hooligans.

    And the clever World Cup ad with the bus stop passengers forming a penalty kick barricade to keep the old lady from being splashed was almost enough to get me interested in soccer. Then I remembered this... Oh, well. To each his own. In the US alone there are probably millions of soccer fans who would be bored out of their minds watching baseball.

    WAR is grain of salt material in this case, but... Hughes + Gibson = 3.0 Nolasco + Deduno + Correia = 1.1 Nolasco + Deduno + Correia + Pelfrey = 0.3 Ok, maybe that last one was piling on, since he's out of the rotation, but still. Fans booing pickoff attempt of one of the more dangerous base stealers of the past decade. And then he goes on the next pitch. Toronto didn't get its rep as a great baseball town for nothing!

    Yup. Broke down his home/road 'against' slash lines in the game thread for his last start. It was pretty much Dozier 2014 with somewhat fewer walks, and Ruth's career slash line with somewhat fewer walks.

    Homers, or just runs? Santana with a late, somewhat defensive swing, and still manages almost a rope down the line. Nice to see him not get picked off by the on the big turn by the Bautista's nice throw. He's learning.

    Gardenhire and co. have left the roster short-handed so often with their decisions that Morales would have to pinch hit until after the ASB before there would be any need to feel sorry for them...

    Read that this weekend and was torn between thinking 'motivated' and 'hothead'. Tiebreaker was that his motivational workout was extra laps instead of mad hopping. So... that was a fairly snappy start to the game. Gotta be tough on a starter to have the first two batters on a team not known for its power go deep.

    Neither he nor Souhan seem particularly concerned about tempering criticism of the organization for fear of lesser access to updates and interviews. That has a value to readers all its own, regardless of the rest.

    There was considerable "bashing" of Kubel? Must have missed most of that. My recollection was that most posters felt the time had come to part ways with him, and much of that was prefaced with a 'thanks for the memories' acknowledgement. Just my impression. If there was widespread bashing going on, it seems to me it was the front office being questioned for placing him on the opening day roster. That was compounded by the FO bringing Bartlett and Guerrier north as well, giving the appearance that the Twins were assembling a nostalgia trip instead of rebuilding toward contention. At any rate, the Twins made the right call, unpleasant though it was. But even if it was late in coming, it shouldn't affect the future much, and the impact on 2014 may be more than made up for with the KM signing. As for Kubel, he will be remembered for his role on the contending teams in the latter half of the previous decade. He was a South Dakota kid who had a fine career despite a knee injury so devastating his baseball future appeared to be in jeopardy. And at age 32, if he walks away from the game, he does so with over 30 million well-deserved dollars in his pocket. Also, as others have mentioned, if he is inclined to transition from player to another role in baseball, he couldn't have spent the majority of his playing career with a better organization than the Twins. So overall, it seems to me that pretty much everyone would agree that the story of Jason Kubel's playing career with the Twins has, regardless of 2014, a happy ending for the fans, the franchise, and Jason.

    And everyone is aware that you treat rhoids with Preparation H, Ren't you? Anyway, the considerable hindsight aside, it's much more likely that the next contending Twins team will benefit from a young pitcher with a high 90's fastball and low 90's slider than from a guy who Twins fans probably wouldn't know from the Simpsons' Nelson Muntz in a few years.
