  1. This type of analysis has SSS issues. In non-Twins games the White Sox are at 500 and the A's are one game below. Conversely the Tigers are one game below 500 in non-Twins games One or two games flips the story from "Twins feasting off of below 500 teams" to "Twins succeeding in spite of poor record against bad teams" Also, if you believe Vegas, the Rangers were supposed to be a playoff team. Also-Also... weren't the Twins really good against the Rangers and Indians (division winners) last year? Where'd that get us?
  2. At the time, 2017 was a SSS, so I looked at 2016 and it showed a similar tendency. That was enough for me to drop the "why is Kepler sitting against a righty" outrage.
  3. The split held true all of last year as well. I agree that I'd prefer he not really sit at all.
  4. You might be referencing last Thursday, when he sat against a righty with two lefties coming in the next three games. Actually that RHP kills lefties, so in a sense it was the right call.
  5. Of course they do
  6. Yeah. You know the day after he's traded, once of Mauer, Vargas, Buxton, Rosario, and Kepler will go on the DL. I like having 6 guys for 5 spots for the occasional bumps and bruises, pinch hitting, and platooning. As long as those are split intelligently (I know... that's a big caveat) Over the course of 15 games... Buxton sits once Kepler sits once Rosario sits twice Vargas sits 3 times Mauer and Grossman sit 4 times each.
  7. Do "times around the league" reset each year?
  8. Very little talk of him on here. What kind of prospect is he? Has good K/9, is 24 years old, and has the closer job at AA (Over Burdi) Ceiling of a future 7th inning guy?
  9. I don't see anyone on here saying "go all in" I see four schools of thought, under the original scenario... 1) trade our most valuable assets for future assets. 2) do nothing and ride it out 3) low-level rental trade for a 4/5 type pitcher 4) go get a 2/3 that is locked up beyond this year If they do "1" the fans will revolt "2" is the safe play I'm probably a "3" but if the cost is right (taking on money, rather than trading multiple promising prospects) I could be convinced to be a "4"
  10. C'mon.... he wouldn't even get that much if he became a free agent tomorrow. Why would we give him that with 4 cheap years still to come?
  11. Ummmm.... the current count is 1. Past contract should have nothing to do with what is or is not offered to Sano.
  12. I agree, but not because they are cheap, but because it has too much risk. Right now the Twins are saddled with a 23M/yr below average first baseman that was (when the contract was inked) supposed to be a HOF catcher. The Twins could replace most if not all of Mauer's production internally, with someone who's pre-arbitration. We'd hate the Twins, in 2023, to be saddled with a $35M "3 outcome" DH who could be replaced or at least mostly replaced by someone making 20% of that. Do, I think he's going to become a 3-outcome DH? No. But anyone looking at this objectively has to realize that's a possibility.
  13. One thing worth thinking about, from Sano's camp's perspective.... power hitting DH types didn't get paid much money this off-season. Was than an anomaly or a trend? Is that Miguel's floor? Probably. But that's a scary financial floor.
  14. On the "Touch 'em All" podcast (Basically 30 minutes of Twins content on 1500AM) this topic came up. I ended up yelling at my radio. They did two "who says no" scenarios. Scenario 1: 10yr/250M Their contention was that both sides might not be all that interested. Which I don't necessarily disagree with, but one of their reasons for Sano's camp saying no was that it wasn't enough money. (more on this in a minute) Scenario 2: 6yr/100M Everybody said Sano's camp would definitely say no. Not enough money. This is when I started yelling at my radio, something to the effect of "DO YOU PEOPLE NOT UNDERSTAND HOW THE FIRST 6 YEARS OF SALARY WORKS?!?!?!" Basically, that would be buying out two free agent years for $35M each, as well as guaranteeing the whole contract. AND THAT'S NOT ENOUGH? I understand the desire from the Sano camp to hit free agency a) as early as possible, and B} at a prime age, but 6 years puts him at what? 28? That's pretty prime. My opinion: 6/70 with a team option that would make it 7/100. Also, I'd keep it pretty flat over the length of the contract. Might as well pay a decent amount now, when we're on the way lower end of our payroll range. 2018: 10 2019: 12 2020: 12 2021: 12 2022: 12 2023: 12 This allows us future financial flexibility as well as, if we need to, a valuable, low-cost trade asset.
  15. I would trade anyone in the Minors not named Berrios (who better not be in the minors much longer) and Romero for a non-rental #2/3 starter. I'm open to a rental, but more of a "#4 pitcher for a flyer" type trade. Realistically, I'd be open to that trade TODAY. What would it take to get Liriano for the rest of the season?
  16. I'd settle for a #4 starter. It makes sense to look at teams that didn't think they were going to be out of it, but are close to being out of it. Toronto Marco Estrada (Rental, but more than a #4) Liriano (Rental) KC Ian Kennedy (Expensive non-rental) SF Jeff Samardzija (Expensive non-rental) Atl RA Dickey (Rental)
  17. In a different way, Thad Levine said something similar when he was on the broadcast during the Rangers series. Basically, if the players have put us in a position to contend, then it's our (the F.O.) job to make sure they have everything they need to succeed this season. He could've given a canned answer to the question, but answered it in a way that left me encouraged.
  18. I think I'd mix up the 6-9 guys (Rosario, Esco, Polanco, Castro), but overall, I mostly like the lineup. ---- This assumes Dozier is available to PH, but not play 2B ----
  19. No, Dick, having Buxton injured does not cause a problem for Molitor to get Vargas in the lineup. Quite the opposite. Just pure stupidity there
  20. You'd think the young player with the much larger sample size, right below them on those lists, would have been included in the conversation.
  21. DSan with a HR and Eddie with a BB in the same game? What's next? Gibby with a snapper mow 'em down inning?
