  1. Let me guess... Infield single for Suzuki.
  2. The first request for quote he got every day he would just automatically not bid.
  3. I'm sure this has been covered before, but yesterday it was new to me.... In Joe Mauer's "fun fact" when he's up to bat, it says that if he wasn't a baseball player, he'd be a carpenter. Surely he's just having fun with us, right?
  4. Hughes spins the ol' knuckle curve for a K
  5. Was this worth a new thread with a thread just a little down the first page, that asked the very question you answered?
  6. What about someone like Drew Stubbs in Colorado. They seem to have a relatively full OF which is leading to time share. Stubbs is on a 1yr, $4M deal and has always player CF (decently).
  7. Bruce Bochey looks like a damn ogre next to that munchkin umpire.
  8. Hey.... Hicks decided to finally swing the bat on the 10th pitch he saw today.
  9. This feels exactly like a 5-2 loss
  10. This seems like as good a place as any to post this recent, really good, fangraphs article about Dozier's baserunning: http://www.fangraphs.com/community/all-your-bases-are-belong-to-brian-dozier/
  11. I think most of agree that this team passes the eye test in terms of improving from last year, but I had remembered reading an insider article (Buster Olney - http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/buster-olney/post/_/id/5076/olney-ranking-strength-of-early-al-schedule) this winter that talked about what a brutal early schedule the Twins had. ------------ 1. Minnesota Twins Games against teams with records of .500 or better in 2013: 31 of their first 40. Home/road: 18 of their first 40 are at home. Notable: My son plays a video game called "Injustice," and I think that lineup of villains is easier than what the Twins will face early in the year. They start out the season with six road games, and then beginning April 18, the Twins will play 25 straight games -- count 'em, 25 -- against teams that either made the playoffs or contended, including the Red Sox, Tigers, Rays and Dodgers. The Twins' new pitching will be tested early. -------------- Not only are we hovering around 500, but that feels like about where we belong, and we've had a brutal schedule the first quarter of the season
  12. If I were to come up with a band name for this team, I'm thinking.... Baby Jesus and the Backwards Ks
  13. An interesting counter-exercise would be to generate a list of WAR32 > 2.0 and see what their WAR27 was. It wasn't totally clear if that is what your edit was implying.
  14. Great... we can expect a 0-5 night from him. This decline is brutal.
  15. People keep talking about "the decline" like it is like paying taxes. On average, over the course of baseball history, people begin to decline around 31. But there's no reason an individuals decline can't start at 34... or 28.... or 31. 31 is a predictive age. It would be interesting to get a little more granular with analysis of "the decline" to look at different body types and positions played. Dozier strikes me as someone who has the body to, and position to, not decline until later in his 30s.
  16. Around the house: Dozier = "the doooooj" (the j is pronounced like a "zh" sound)
  17. In writing my two posts in this thread I have discovered that "incent" is not really a word (according to Merriam/Webster). Well, I'm going to keep using it, but now I'm going to feel like a rebel when I do.
  18. It would be interesting to base this on that player's WAR (or some other internal metric). When you're in you're rookie contract WAR 1.0 to 1.9 gets you $50k, 2.0 to 2.9 gets you another $50k, and so on. Not enough to break a team's budget, obviously, but enough, when you're "only" making 500k per year to significantly incent that young player.
  19. I don't think there should be a rush to ink a 5/40 extension, but from Dozier's perspective I certainly understand the "rush" to get a long term deal in place. Obviously knowing you're getting _,000,000 per year for 5 years regardless of injury or regression is a huge thing for him and his family. 5/40 might be a fair market deal but it's about 39.5M more guaranteed dollars than he has right now. Unless you are buying out a bunch of FA years for a probable star player, there's rarely much incentive (in my opinion) for a team to get into these 5/40 type deals. Dozier's got to give something to get something. 5/30 Seems like a place we can agree is: a) a chunk less than he will likely get over the next 5 years if he continues to play the way he is playing, and enough money to incent Dozier to potentially leave some money on the table to guarantee the security I'm sure that he wants. At 5/30 both sides have some incentive
  20. I'd be nervous sitting in those seats with a little one. You have to really be paying attention the whole time. I've taken my young daughters to games in several parts of the park and my favorite (other than the Champions Club, which obviously was pretty nice), my favorite was Skyline Deck (Sections S-U). The value is good and you get a good view of the whole field. Section S being the closest to home plate, that's what I would target, as your chances of getting a foul ball have to be significantly better in that section compared to section U or V Besides the nervousness of the sections you mentioned, being so low to the field it can be a little difficult for little ones to track what's going on across the field.
  21. Think of the roster flexibility!!!
