  1. I wonder if Tony Oliva wished he had listened to his knees a bit more throughout his shortened career... I'm guessing so.
  2. The fact that Astudillo never strikes out does not make him a good hitter. He is hitting an empty .289, since he never takes walks and rarely hits for extra bases (he has a whopping three extra-base hits in 46 PAs on the season). His infield fly ball rate this season is 23% for crying out loud! I also think he is a fun player to watch and maybe he is good in the clubhouse, but let's not pretend like he fits into this team's long-term plans as anything more than a utility player off the bench.
  3. This sounds like the old "Twins Way" mentality that was preached to every player during the Gardy and Ryan years. Remember how they wanted guys like David Ortiz to hit to the opposite field instead of hitting for power? You can even look at a guy like Buxton who came up to the majors around the end of Gardy and Ryan's tenures. They were coaching him to slap the ball on the ground and try to beat out infield singles. I prefer the current version of Buxton to that version, and I prefer the current organizational philosophy of prioritizing power over hitting to the opposite field.
  4. The way Rooker has looked so far this year, sure, it's hard to look much worse. But he's only had 22 PAs this season, and he looked very promising in his short stint in the majors last season. The point is that Broxton is much more of a known commodity and he has a low ceiling, while we're not quite sure what we have with Rooker yet. I'm not sure Broxton really would make the team better right now. I do agree with you about Kirilloff, though, and I hope they'll be breaking the seal on him this weekend.
  5. It hasn't? You must have missed the part where the Twins have the second-best record in the AL since Baldelli took over...
  6. Okay, but they never would have tied that game with Cruz still running the bases, as Cave scored on a close call on a wild pitch if I remember correctly. Rocco has made plenty of questionable decisions, but let's give some credit where credit is due. There are definitely both benefits and risks to these types of decisions.
  7. At least wait until our favorite ballclub gets away from the coast before you start wishing for that...
  8. Good questions... I had tickets to the Monday night game, and they have already given me a refund for those. I can't find any details about how it works if you have tickets to the Tuesday game. Maybe try calling the box office to ask. I was really looking forward to finally seeing some live baseball, so I'm selfishly hoping that this series actually gets played, but first and foremost, let's just hope that everyone in the Twins organization is healthy at the end of all this.
  9. I heard this call on the radio, and I had no idea this was a rule. Leave it to baseball to be so complex that I'm still learning new rules after a few decades!
  10. Cruz not starting in Milwaukee was entirely due to the NL not having a DH, so I don't think that's relevant to your point. I was just confused because you used a demonstrably false statement in your criticism, but I do get your point. Counterpoint: For every Ken Griffey Jr. or Cal Ripken Jr., you can probably find a former superstar player that had their career cut short due to playing through injuries, such as Tony Oliva. Perhaps Baldelli is too liberal about resting his players throughout the season, but I don't think it's being done without any basis. They have a strategy (which isn't terribly different from how most other teams operate these days), and it's very possible that this strategy leads to higher overall player performance, along with longer careers. It's tough to say for sure either way.
  11. What did you find negative about this article? I thought it had a pretty optimistic outlook for both players. Now, the comments on the other hand... Plenty of negativity there, but that's to be expected after a 2-5 homestand. I'll take negativity over apathy, at least the Twins have a fanbase who cares!
  12. Huh? Buxton has played in 9 games and Cruz has played in 12...
  13. Garver's K-rate is around 40% as well, and his OBP is 50 points lower than Jeffers so far this year. Neither of them are great options at the plate right now, and I still think it made more sense to pinch hit for Riddle than Jeffers.
  14. This is just more outcome-dependent criticism, and that ball was over Arráez's head anyway. Rocco has his faults, but you can tell he has a process and he sticks with it. The players seem to like the consistency, and it's only lead to one of the best records in the AL over the past 2+ seasons.
  15. Garver hit for Riddle, directly after Jeffers's at-bat. I don't know about you, but I would much rather have Garver hit for Riddle than for Jeffers, and I don't think there was anyone else available on the bench at that point, assuming he was determined not to use Buxton or Donaldson at all. I do think it's questionable that neither of those guys were available for just a pinch hit and an inning or two in the field, but I'm guessing he didn't want to risk anything with those guys in the last cold weather game for awhile. The weather in Anaheim should be little kinder...
  16. On the other hand, he made it through two perfect innings throwing less than 20 pitches total. I thought a third inning of Dobnak there was completely reasonable, especially after Sunday's game when Rocco removed a dominant looking Robles in favor of Colome in the ninth.
  17. Sure, I think that's fair. Perhaps if the bats had shown any sign of life, Rocco would've managed things differently, but there's not much to be done when nobody is hitting.
  18. The bullpen is in the top five in the league in almost every meaningful metric... I think too many people here are blaming the bullpen for these losses when the bats are disappearing in the mid to late innings.
  19. He gave up two hits and one run over three innings... Seems to me that he had the best outing of any Twins pitcher today!
  20. Man, this take is... puzzling. I guess we should let the bats off the hook for not managing to scratch a single run across in three extra innings so far?
  21. People are so damn fickle... Was anyone here paying attention to the team in 2019 when Sano looked lost at the plate throughout his first few weeks and then proceeded to hit the cover off the ball for the rest of the season? I get that strikeouts are not fun to watch, but they're honestly only slightly worse than a normal groundout or pop fly (and they're better than double plays!). While the results haven't been there yet, I still think Sano has been taking some good at-bats so far, and if he continues this approach, he's going to start connecting sooner or later. Any calls to bench him in favor of Astudillo are just plain silly.
  22. Considering their opening day starter was Kyle Gibson, I think Texas really is that bad... but it's also not unfeasible that KC could be a .500 team this season.
  23. I didn't say he pitched well, but he induced a weak ground ball directly to Polanco with two outs. That should've ended the inning, and he shouldn't have had to pitch to Altuve. Also, the two hits he allowed were both bloopers that were hit less than 80mph. He certainly didn't give himself any margin for error, and he certainly shouldn't have walked Altuve. But the fact remains that he pitched well enough to get out of the inning, and his defense let him down.
