  1. Another excellent example of a positive role model of the younger generation. As he said, "I just love seeing people happy, especially people that are not as blessed as I am. When I see an opportunity where I can help make somebody happy or even make there day a little better, i'll do it every time." What a great principle to guide one's life. Congrats, Travis!
  2. Congratulations, DJ! Another remarkable young man, grounded in a love for others. There are many professional athletes that could take a cue from DJ. This really says it all: "Baxendale understands the role he has and has a strong perspective on what he can do with it. “I feel that it is important for me to give back because of my platform. I have the unique ability to be able to reach out to people because I am a professional baseball player. All of our fans stay loyal to the team regardless of who is playing and I want to show them that we care about them and their community as much as they care about us. Life is all about reciprocity. I want to always give back as much if not more as people give to me.” (Boldface added for emphasis by me.)
  3. A well deserved honor for Kevin. Congratulations! He is headed to a future of great happiness and personal success. And I hope that much of his future is with the Twins. A legacy of caring about others sets an ultimate example for us all. "If we keep that train moving we will keep on growing as human beings and helping others grow, which at the end of the day is what team is all about."
  4. I am on the fence with Molitor returning. Not having insight from behind the scenes I can't really speak to his use of the numbers or his relationship with the young players. His bunting is a concern as is some of his in-game decisions. I'm even on the pen usage. But one area I have to give him props is the resiliency this team has shown. For such a young team to overcome some tough games or a series,it's remarkable how they have avoided the long losing streak. I'm sure the vet's play a big role here, but it's the manager that sets the tone everyday. That is not an easy trait to learn, whereas the other shortcomings can be easier to correct. I'm hoping he returns b/c that'll probably mean the Twins did very well in October.
  5. It was really nice to see Joe turn on that inside pitch. Here's hoping he can do that in Yankee Stadium a couple of times. I'm as happy for Joe as I'm for the Twins that he's hitting as well as he has. This season should help them tremendously going forward.
  6. Sometimes one can over manage and Mollie sure did this time. It looks like he saw a tight game and went into small ball mode early ignoring the fact that this is not a small ball team, per se. Performance from the BP was not there so I won't fault him too much there, but taking the bats out of the "producers" is, IMO, is really inexcusable. Putting it kindly, he lost the game last night on a very poor night of managing. It happens and let's hope he can see the error of his ways.
  7. All i know this is fun! We are building a real exciting team. As with any tournament it's getting to it at the right time. Can the Twins sustain their surge? I would not be surprised. There seems to be a vibe that they like winning and don't except anything else. Plus I have faith in the new FO and the youngsters coming that we are about to see some exciting baseball in Minnesota.
  8. Thanks Seth. This was a fun and enlightening read. Yes it does show how tough it is to get to Majors, but also how tough it is to even stay in the original organization or pro ball. Each draft could easily have one's replacement taking his place. I would venture to say that this would mirror other clubs drafts too.
  9. Lewis joined some pretty good company last nite. Dare I say he established his potential comps with that feat? Not yet but with his performance so far I'm really encouraged.
  10. Yes fans should be excited because the Twins are playing good ball. More importantly the players seem excited, more so than I've seen in many years. It was so much fun watching Sano and Rosario with the others in the dugout as Colon batted last nite. The game should be fun. And what can I say about the pitcher,a perfect physical clone of myself, staring down the batters and saying, "Here, see if you get hit this one, sucker." These are attitudes that have been missing on the Twins and to me show a growing confidence needed for success. I don't think the FO will do anything substantial unless it works for the future as well. Regardless I'm on for the ride.
  11. Seth is there an error in Stephen Gonsalves stats? I calculate, his WHIP at .745. ( 6 GS, 32.2 IP, 3-0, 3.31 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, 14 H, 11 BB, 36 K ) I'd like to see Slegers and Melville start a few games to see what they have. They could be some decent depth or maybe even good place holders for the AA prospects.
  12. Burdi is a tough one. Could he be added and then put on the 60 day DL? Also is it possible that the Braves rejected him in part thinking he might be a potential rule 5 pickup thereby essentially adding another player to the trade? A very long shot I know.
  13. Yes that's correct. Seth started a thread regarding that titled, "Twins, Jax Affected by Defense Department Decision" on the MiLB forum if you want to look it up.
  14. Thanks Seth for another nice synopsis of what's available. I enjoy all of these articles by you, Nick, and the others. One of the things that has many worried is that the national view of our MiLB prospects is not very strong although it seems to have some good depth. That being said, while we all hope that those coming up are at least future regulars, I sometimes lose sight of the fact that most players have a limited run in the majors. So, I'm hoping that several of these players can be serviceable for a couple of years and that a couple turn out to be more than that. While we will debate the performances we expect of any candidate for promotion you bring me back to reality with the following comment from your Graver paragraph: ""I say "probably" only because we never know what that transition to the big leagues will be like for any player.""
  15. Wow, Doc, had to read this 3 times to separate all the "sooners" and "laters." Looks like a start of a good country song. Anyway, quite profound.
  16. Up until a month or so ago I thought Greene would be the best selection. Since that time I have settle on Wright and then McKay for the reasons you state here - the secondary pitches. I am not as enthralled with triple digit FB as many are. There are many HOFers and others that were excellent pitchers without the super speed. Also, as the hitters improve the speed becomes less an obstacle. So the secondary pitches are very important. And I just can't ignore the injury concerns for a hard throwing HS pitcher. I'd be fine with any of the big 3, but I would likely go with less risk and higher floor of Wrigh or McKay. OTOH, I wouldn't mind Greene as a SS if the scouts thikg he has a high ceiling there. Wonder if he could be a ARod type position player? Clean, of course. It is going to be a fun and interesting draft, for sure. Should have lots of comments.
  17. Wouldn't it be cool to have both Wells and Thorpe in the rotation sometime in the future? Crocodile Dundee I & II.
  18. The additional ranking info helps bring perspective to the current rank. Other than Rosario the rest fall somewhat within previous ranks. Thanks.
  19. Thanks Seth. It's interesting that there's 3 or so that could see the majors this year or next and yet are rated this low. (I don't disagree with the ranking, however.). Don't believe I've seen that in the past. They may not be top prospects but I think they could be good role players and who knows maybe one will step out to shine. Anyway I enjoy your lists and look forward to the rest.
  20. Second that LA. Also as with most, if not all, large contracts actually pay for past performance more than future performance. That's just the way things even out, at least from the players side. Unfortunately teams signing onto those contracts are the ones that pay the piper and I suspect they understand there is a good risk for a performance decline. While that may seem lacking business sense then how does one justify the large bonuses for prospects who haven't even started pro ball. Whether I like this or not, sports are paid as entertainers.
  21. Thanks Seth. It's fun to read about players in other organizations of their processes, success and struggles.
  22. It's great to see their progress defensively. IIRC Polanco was once considered an excellent fielding shortstop early in his career. One generally doesn't lose that. The arm doesn't worry me especially if you have a good defensive 1B. I think this improvement can be attributable in part to maturity, experience, repetition, and the comfort of knowing where you are going to play each day. i think we are seeing with the IF and OF a return to a very good defensive Twins team.
  23. Totally agree with this. There is nothing to prove in AAA and he needs to learn with the Twins. As Swanson alluded to the difference in the majors where one can do things right and still come out on the short end because of the much better caliber of pitching. I don't like the jerking around either. Build his confidence even if it's in slow and painful. As I wrote on another post, he needs to find that "attitude" that gives him a can do mentality. If he is really lost and confused, then bench him for a few games so he might find that hunger again. But for pete's sake don't bench him when he's starting show progress like this weekend.
