  1. I agree about Beresford. He deserves a shot. Bernier is not part of the future for the Twins. Beresford might be as a utility infielder. It is nice to see how his hitting has improved with time/development.
  2. If Chisenhall gets on the Indians have batted around. That would suck.
  3. 0 and 2 count and then he walks the guy who is hitting .233.
  4. Stuart Turner might find himself on the 40-man roster with a good showing in spring training, and even if he is not added then, if he remains healthy and is playing well at AA or AAA this season, and if another catcher is needed as a fill-in on the big league club, then Turner can be added. Defense is his calling card, and he is hoping to refine, with some time, his hitting stroke.
  5. The real question is what if he plays the same or worse this upcoming season? It is certainly possible that he will no longer be a remarkable player. I hope he does return to form offensively, but you never know. If he does not return to form offensively, then is he the best the Twins can do at first base? That should be a masher position. He seemed stuck on lining balls to left field or striking out (uncharacteristically). Does he know how to pull the ball? Until he starts doing that, left fielders are going to keep shagging a lot of line drives and fly balls off of his bat.
  6. My break out picks are Tyler Duffy (AAA), John Curtis (not sure of name--6th round pick from U of Texas). Both Duffy and Curtis were relievers when drafted out of college (although Curtis started as a freshman before arm injuries). Curtis filled in as a starter last season and did very well. Keep your eye on him as a starter. My two other break out picks are Alex Swim (catcher) and two outfielders: Tanner English (speed--think Brett Gardner) and Zach Larsen (more punch with the bat than English). How many people this time last year had Santana and Vargas as break out players?
  7. I am not grumpy about the duplication, if that is what you call it, about Plouffe and a possible trade. It is not always easy to find the "first" thread on a topic as there are so many, well, topics on this forum. Writing up to the minute, i.e., thinking about consequences for the Giants given Sandoval's signing with the Red Sox makes sense to me Let's get excited rather than grumpy about some hot stove discussion. Plouffe is a California guy, although I cannot remember from what part of the state he hails from. If the Twins could get a top prospect starting pitcher (someone who pitched no lower than high A ball last season) and a AA or AAA corner outfield prospect, someone with wheels and pop in his bat, then the Twins should consider such a move. Plouffe is one of my favorite Twins players, but teams have to make moves that are going to make them better. I know that Chief regularly criticizes trading a current MLB player for prospects, and I understand his thinking, but I don't think the Twins will compete this coming season for a playoff spot, but I do think that they can start to compete in 2016, and their success will largely depend on their starting pitching (they have bullpen prospects galore, and some young killer bats--they need effective starters, and SF sure does seem to produce a lot of them).
  8. Could the "rave on" reference posted earlier also refer to Van Morrison and not just Buddy Holly? I see the Dylan and by extension Them reference to "Baby Blue" as perhaps indicating that we are not Donne with the Van references.
  9. Ouch, I spoke too soon about Hughes being the bright side tonight.
  10. Colabello almost fouled out on ball four and then strikes out looking. What a lousy at bat on his last two swings. On the bright side, there is Phil Hughes.
  11. Hu, Duffy and Gilmartin are all doing well since their promotions. I would give the pitcher of the day to Duffy over Hu, but I understand why someone might go with the Low A starter for his 10 Ks yesterday. In case folks haven't noticed, Cedar Rapids is now only 4 games below .500 after playing well below it all season. Hu is one big reason along with hitting by Garver and Harr and Kanzler and some others, but I also think that Burdi has had a positive impact on the team's surge, closing out games (he had his one stinker first time out, but he has been very impressive since then). If Seth or someone would be up to the challenge, it would be great if someone could talk about some of the pitchers who have been on the minor league rosters awhile who likely will not be on the Twins minor league rosters next year. For example, will Summers still be there? How about Boer? How about Corey Williams who seems to have been hurt for most of the season? Will Bard and Chargois ever pitch meaningful games for the TWins minor league teams and regain prospect status or have their respective injuries done them in? Wimmers seems to be pitching better of late. Will he be a Rule 5 candidate? What about Oliveros and the guy the TWins got from the Mets for Johan (pitching at AAA)? I'm leaving out some guys, but I am interested in how the Twins start thinning out their minor league pitching prospects now that they have been restocking the arms over the last 3-4 drafts.
  12. I would have selected Sam Gibbons and his 11 Ks as the pitcher of the day. Meyers pitched well but had a lot of walks in 6 innings.
  13. Escobar has been one of my favorite players this season. All he does is hit and play great defense. How many doubles does he have now? If I were selecting a mid-season Twins MVP, I might be tempted to go with Dozier, but I am more tempted to go with either Escobar or Suzuki. Dozier plays great defense, hits homers, and hustles. Escobar plays defense very well, hustles, battles his tail off, to use one of Gardy's favorite expressions, and he has been Mr. Clutch so often with the bat. Suzuki has been out of this world with the bat, great working with the pitching staff (has caught four games in a row), and also hustles. His one area of weakness is gunning down base stealers, but, hey, he's doing everything else so well that the base stealing issue is really no issue to this point. The good news is that there are so many possible mid-season MVPs to this point.
  14. I don't know if anyone has mentioned this elsewhere, but I have to believe that Pino, if he pitches well, would be a trade piece. His numbers at AAA are fantastic, but he's not going to fetch much as a AAA pitcher. Giving him a shot to pitch at the MLB level increases his trade value if he pitches well. Of course, if he pitches well, one might ask "why trade him," but with Meyer, May, Berrios, and Darnell and Johnson also pitching well, Pino is sort of a placeholder. If he pitches well, he could be potentially flipped to a team looking for pitching help in July. The Twins could then shift May or Meyer or Johnson/Darnell into his rotation spot. Pitchers who are effective will always have trade value even if they are thirty year old rookies.
  15. Oswaldo's screw up led to the first run of the game and to the last one. Plus, he was hitless in the series. He's one of my favorite players on the team, but ick and ish and any other words anyone wants to throw in.
  16. Great job by Guerrier. Awesome job. I cannot believe he could do it, but a tip of the cap to him.
  17. Sooner or later you have to pitch to Cabrera and to Martinez rather than pitching scared. The Twins definitely need another effective, come at you reliever like Fien and Perkins. Think about the Yankee's 7th inning shut down reliever Dellen Betances. Nasty! I think that the Twins recent draft of Burdi and Cederoth were selections with this hole in the roster in mind. If the Twins stay within sniffing distance of a playoff spot and if Burdi does well in the minors, he just might get the call in late July to the 25 man roster.
  18. Anybody know how many outs Mauer has had like that this season? It used to work, but it rarely does anymore. Too bad he is not comfortable pulling the ball.
  19. The son of former Twin's relief pitcher Mark Guthrie was the Twins' last selection. He is a ss, and he has a commitment to U of Florida.
  20. One thing I have noticed so far is that the Twins have yet to draft a catcher. Normally that position is a priority with the Twins on draft day, but they have a backlog at the position. Have they still only drafted one lefty pitcher? I like the pitcher-heavy strategy in that the team is much closer to competing above the .500 level, and you can trade pitching to get players, and any players they shed later this season (Willingham, Duensing, Suzuki, all possibilities) can be dealt for position players in the minors (the low minors, most likely).
  21. Any word on top draft choices Bard and Chargois? Didn't Chargois have his Tommy John over a year ago?
